malificent7 · 19/01/2019 08:30

Also getting comments from supermarket staff acknowledging Brexit..Went to Tescos to get brocilli and no bar code at till. Weng to get another and cashier commented on how it had gone up. Colleague immediately said brexit.....

malificent7 · 19/01/2019 08:30

Went...typos agggr!

Whisky2014 · 19/01/2019 08:34

You mean they've put the prices up already in anticipation of people buying it now? Fuckers.

borntobequiet · 19/01/2019 08:55

Actually I’m amazed that imported fresh food is still so cheap, given the weakness of the pound. Food in the UK is cheaper than almost anywhere in Europe (I’ll try and find a link), probably down to the purchasing power of our supermarkets (and their shameful treatment of suppliers).

borntobequiet · 19/01/2019 08:59

Here:
ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php/Comparative_price_levels_for_food,_beverages_and_tobacco#Price_levels_for_food.2C_beverages_and_tobacco
The high price of tobacco bumps us up to the middle of the table rather than the bottom
And a good reason for shopping at Aldi:

cloudtree · 19/01/2019 09:53

I am incorporating fruit and veg into my freezer stock. Fuck off Daily Mail. So instead of putting a pack of minced beef in, I am turning each pack into 2 lasagnes stuffed with a wide variety of veg - peppers, spinach, chopped olives, tomatoes, courgette, aubergines etc topped with very calorific cheesy sauce. Otherwise if there were real shortages you could find you take out your mince and eat it as..mince. Not quite as nice.

DH thinks Im being ridiculous expecting 8 home made lasagnes to last until B day in the freezer Grin - he's probably right fuck off Daily mail.

TheElementsSong · 19/01/2019 09:55

You mean they've put the prices up already in anticipation of people buying it now? Fuckers.

I would hope nobody is trying to stockpile fresh broccoli ConfusedGrin

Somerville · 19/01/2019 10:26

Nice when a delivery driver seems to have a better grasp of geography than the erstwhile Brexit Sec, Somerville.

I said something along those lines actually, and he rather coyly replied that he’s not allowed to get party political!

Re NI electricity - my relatives there are very worried. And some work at a level where they should be aware of sensible plans for mitigation, and are not. (Only for hospitals and industry, not private homes.)

Belindabelle · 19/01/2019 10:41

Oh cloudtree I am stealing that idea. I am going to cook, portion and freeze a vat of veg heavy mince that can be turned into chilli, bolognese, cottage pie, lasagne etc. Might do the same with chicken that could be turned into curry or pie.

DH has just been into the garage and noticed that the Brexit stash has been significantly increased this week. I think he is impressed.

BadlyAgedMemes · 19/01/2019 10:57

That's a good idea, cloudtree and Belindabelle! I think I'll do a large batch of veggie-rich ragu-type stuff and freeze it in portions.

I'm also glad the article linked above blamed the situation and people in power and not the patients for the medication worries and stockpiling. I haven't been getting extra meds from any source, but I have been taking slightly less, so have a small buffer now. I'll be overjoyed if things go okay this spring, and I can just quietly switch back to my normal doses every day.

Petalflowers · 19/01/2019 14:50

Well they are not stockpiling in Costco. Possibly people are waiting until payday, but It was noticeably quieter than normal. Manage to do a shop and stock up on things without husband realising what I was doing. Ie. Don’t actually need toilet rolls at the moment, but now have 40!

crosstalk · 19/01/2019 16:56

I'm just prepping ahead of a freeze and snow .... and stuff I can use if the electric goes off. Alas, I've just moved from a house with three forms of fuel - I'm not sure what to do apart from eat cold if it all goes off. Dog, medicine, fuel, check car, more tins than freezer food. As for Brexit - no idea.

HolySwearingCuss · 19/01/2019 17:43

Do you have a garden/outdoor area and could you use a bbq or mini campfire if you needed to?

BlackeyedGruesome · 20/01/2019 01:28

I need to pull all the food out of the food cupboard and organise it. Check everything is in date and refill.
I am natural food hoarder anyway due to childhood.

It is helpful to read other people's experiences if what others are up to and how the stocking up is going.

Ex is clueless. He has no intention of doing anything about sticking up. His house is a good place to stash food though as he is so untidy. I will leave some of the children's favourite food there. He has a barbeque as well.

I have bought a couple of packs of ds's favourite biscuits to stash. I am going to need many more.

The most difficult thing to store will be tinned tomatoes as we use so many.

We are going to be alrightish for a couple of weeks but thinking we should try for longer.

BlackeyedGruesome · 20/01/2019 01:33

I guess making sure you have means to cook on a barbeque if necessary. I have an all metal pan for soups. It would be back to guiding days and cooking on an open fire.

Schmoobarb · 20/01/2019 01:38

Re buying extra food...it had kind of crossed my mind after reading on here about it but I don’t have the space or the money really...but when my Uber laid back husband suggested the other day we should maybe think about it, it’s got me thinking!

I’ve been buying paracetamol though 2 packs whenever I’m in a supermarket!

Notanidiot · 20/01/2019 01:57

@chocooverloa2010 so agree. Zombie apocalypse ha ha!

I can't go through all these pages because it is so rediculous. Stockpiling supplies otherwise starvation beckons come 29 March 2019. What rubbish.

Don't the mumsnetters giving into mass hysteria, have a thought for those with no space, no money or wondering where this weeks food is coming from never mind stocking up on food and other stuff for months and months afterwards.

Get a grip people.

freezinguplands · 20/01/2019 04:29

Apart from the fact that hasn't been what has been said on the threads, so it's a shame you didn't read through them notanidiot because you might have picked up some useful and pretty balanced information.
Would a zombie want to eat fresh veg, or pesto?

HolySwearingCuss · 20/01/2019 05:47

Sadly not living up to your username there Notanidiot.

BadlyAgedMemes · 20/01/2019 06:50

Don't the mumsnetters giving into mass hysteria, have a thought for those with no space, no money or wondering where this weeks food is coming from never mind stocking up on food and other stuff for months and months afterwards.

This is an interesting piece of logic. Does the thought that there are people who can't afford a weekly shop stop you from doing yours? Do you choose not to live in a warm home, because there are people who don't have that luxury? Of course you can "spare a thought" for those struggling, and even take whatever measures you can to help, while still looking after yourself. Me not buying a bag of pasta won't make Tesco give that bag of pasta to someone who can't afford it.

bellinisurge · 20/01/2019 08:07

"Don't the mumsnetters giving into mass hysteria, have a thought for those with no space, no money or wondering where this weeks food is coming from never mind stocking up on food and other stuff for months and months afterwards. "

It's a few journos and no dealers interventions (desperate to lampoon a sensible exchange of ideas) that is the closest we get to mass hysteria on these threads.
As for caring about others who can't afford to put stuff by, I think Jack Monroe has addressed that .
If you are in a position where you cannot buy a few extra basics range tins, it is incumbent upon people who can to take care of themselves and keep the hell out of the way of any assistance that is needed. So that it can go where it's needed IF it's needed.

borntobequiet · 20/01/2019 08:29

You can’t be bothered to check your spelling either, Notanidiot.

TheElementsSong · 20/01/2019 09:02

As others have beautifully addressed idiot's non-points, all I have left to say is:

Welcome, drive-by empty-slogan-spritzer! We greatly value your content-free contribution, which no doubt you proudly think is highly original, and that nobody else has thought of on a 1300-post series of threads.

For those with space (including space and money to store layers pellets) the National Hen Welfare Trust often have hens needing homes all around the UK.

Check Facebook or their website.

We always get hens from them, they eat garden bits plus grain/pellets but you can buy those in bulk and store in a sealed container, will last month's.

We get a regular supply of eggs as commercial hens are culled once production drops slightly, so any hens coming into rescue still lay pretty regularly.
