Please help me lovely people of Mumsnet.

I've got 9 coming for lunch.

Put the gammon on last night to slow roast but my oven didn't heat up! Think the heating element has blown but not sure. Spent ages fiddling but it's still not working and I'm out of ideas.

I need to cook a gammon , a chicken and a salmon en croute for 1pm.

I have a Panasonic convention combi microwave oven and a working hob.

Help me save my families Xmas !

Can you boil the gammon and use combi to cook chicken first then salmon?

BWcastle2000 · 25/12/2018 06:45

Change of venue?

Magentaorwagenta · 25/12/2018 06:47

Change of venue not an option - ok boil the gammon, not worry about the roasting bit of the recipe and use the combi for chicken and salmon. Can do. Any ideas about the veg!

Boil the gammon.

Put chicken in the combi oven, take out & cover with foil. Cook salmon. Mash potatoes instead of roast. Eat a bit later than planned.

Or if you know your neighbours & they aren’t cooking ask to use their kitchen!

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 25/12/2018 06:50

Vegetables- boil & then flash fry in melted butter

Gotthetshirt23 · 25/12/2018 06:50

Boil the gammon in full fat coke

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 25/12/2018 06:52

Where do you live? Wondering if any mnetters can lend you spare slow cooker or combi microwave. I have a spare happy thanksgiving lend out

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 25/12/2018 06:53

Happy to lend out

No idea where thanksgiving came from

Magentaorwagenta · 25/12/2018 07:01

Oh that is just so kind thank you so much. I am have a combination microwave I've never used as an oven before so currently using bowl of water to clean it and then going to do chicken , gammon boiling in coke as I type Smile will boil and flash fry all veg. Any microwave combi oven tips for roasting chicken and salmon en croute, anything to be careful of?

Thanks all Xmas Smile

I just use my combi oven as an oven but I need to turn the food round more often to prevent it burning & for more even cooking. But I’ve has to use it a few times & is a godsend.

Good luck.

dinodiva · 25/12/2018 07:07

Do you have a Weber type bbq? You can cook joints of meat very well in something like that.

Naughtyfrog · 25/12/2018 07:07

Any neighbours you know who will be away for today and would let you use their oven?

Hope it all goes well

Bouncebacker · 25/12/2018 07:08

No advice - think you have it sorted! Good luck, we will be thinking of you!

littlered05 · 25/12/2018 07:09

Do any of your guests live close enough for you to cook in their oven even if they can't host the meal itself?

1fluffydoodle · 25/12/2018 07:10

I roast my chicken upside down in my microwave convection oven, we have a programme for chicken but need to put in the weight, a large chicken in mine takes the full program time then repeated for half the programme time again, I put it in a small casserole dish as the fat drains into to container.

LutherRalph1 · 25/12/2018 07:10

Sometimes
My oven doesn't heat if I've leant on the buttons and it flashes auto on the display

Littleraindrop15 · 25/12/2018 07:12

Post a picture of your oven setting it might be you haven't switched it on properly.. Happened to me multiple times x

elspethmcgillicuddy · 25/12/2018 07:12

OP you are my hero. I love this thread so far because instead of panicking and banging on about Christmas being ruined you are cracking on and sorting out your plans. You sound so positive. Happy Christmas!

Rachelsholiday · 25/12/2018 07:14

Do you have a BBQ maybe a bit of alfresco cooking??

Ratbagcatbag · 25/12/2018 07:16

Good luck to you.

Also another one not using my oven today and I'd happily let a neighbour use it in these circumstances.

2015newstart · 25/12/2018 07:16

Another alternative for veg: root veg mash (saves on pans) or boil, chop and do a massive pan of bubble and squeak (again, saves on pans and less to worry about).

TipseyTorvey · 25/12/2018 07:16

Came on to say the same as Luther, my oven doesn't work if the clock is flashing. What kind of oven is it? Might be worth a quick google?

Magentaorwagenta · 25/12/2018 07:17

Oh you're all so lovely. Thank you! Yes trying best to be positive! I thought could be the auto setting I will take a pic of the timer thingy. Thanks everyone Xmas Smile
