Please help - Xmas day oven emergency, oven not heating up!!

Please help me lovely people of Mumsnet.

I've got 9 coming for lunch.

Put the gammon on last night to slow roast but my oven didn't heat up! Think the heating element has blown but not sure. Spent ages fiddling but it's still not working and I'm out of ideas.

I need to cook a gammon , a chicken and a salmon en croute for 1pm.

I have a Panasonic convention combi microwave oven and a working hob.

Help me save my families Xmas !

Sounds strange , but if the clock on oven is not set ( flashing) the oven won't work.

Magentaorwagenta · 25/12/2018 07:23

Can't see anything wrong with it, the power did trip yesterday, my cousin did fiddle with it, I've reset the clock but I will admit it's all quite mysterious to me

Remember - youtube might be your friend... anything you are not sure how to do (with having to use appliances differently) there is bound to be an instruction video. The only thing I can think might be a problem is the roast potatoes... nice neighbour who aren't eating at home or eat much later that would let you do them in their oven maybe?

Littleraindrop15 · 25/12/2018 07:24

What make and model is it I will Google instructions

GinIsIn · 25/12/2018 07:26

Try turning the oven off at the socket, resetting the clock and then putting it on without the auto timer.

sackrifice · 25/12/2018 07:26

mine doesn't work after a power trip until i fiddle with it a bit.

if you know the make of oven, google 'reset after power trip' and see what it recommends.

If you can cope with straight steamed salmon, wrap it in foil with lemon and put it in the dishwasher- no soap! On a short cycle.
You could then layer a slice of pastry on top, that you’ve pre done in the oven? It would save time spent in oven to free it up for chicken.

Magentaorwagenta · 25/12/2018 07:27

Thank you so much - the prob is I live in a rental and this is an old oven - I can't even see the make and model I will take another pic

Is the salmon already in the pastry? If not, you can slice and pan fry.

Have you got a blow torch? (raid the shed, doesn't have to be a "chef's" one). If so, that's how to caramelise a glaze on the gammon after its boiled.

Does the grill work? - could get you a bit of a crisp on the mash.

Magentaorwagenta · 25/12/2018 07:28

I'm sure I've turned the auto timer off as no letters on the display ?

I will try to Google that serial number but I have no other information about the oven I don't think as can't pull it out

My guess is that the middle button below the time is the Function button. Try pushing that to see if it changes anything.
For example see this video of a Belling three button timer:

Sliceofrice · 25/12/2018 07:31

I have the exact same oven. It's a very simple one, so if it's not working you know it's not working. The dial on the right is def pointing all the way to the top isn't it?

Sliceofrice · 25/12/2018 07:32

Just seen your second photo. Sorry, I think it's a dead oven.

Magentaorwagenta · 25/12/2018 07:34

Love the dishwasher tip!! Chicken now in

Agree that it's the element. Mine tripped power when it went a few weeks ago. If anyone has a portable cooker like an actifry/ halogen oven, this could help too with potatoes and roast veg. Well done, sounds like you have it under control - hope gammon still ok after being out all night...

Magentaorwagenta · 25/12/2018 07:34

Yes think it's dead too got a neighbour having a look

Flibbitygibbit · 25/12/2018 07:39

Am in Leicester Op.... welcome to. Come and add to mine if you're near, I reckon it's gone onto auto though

Llanali · 25/12/2018 07:42

I’m in the Fens and have a slow cooker and a george foreman if either would help.
