Please help - Xmas day oven emergency, oven not heating up!!

Please help me lovely people of Mumsnet.

I've got 9 coming for lunch.

Put the gammon on last night to slow roast but my oven didn't heat up! Think the heating element has blown but not sure. Spent ages fiddling but it's still not working and I'm out of ideas.

I need to cook a gammon , a chicken and a salmon en croute for 1pm.

I have a Panasonic convention combi microwave oven and a working hob.

Help me save my families Xmas !

You can roast in a combi - google your microwave and you can get the programme instructions online.

Boil the gammon in coke (google Nigella recipe) - if you don't have any then lots of garages or corner shops may be open today (mine are as the owners don't observe Christmas).

And get straight on to the landlord and tell them that the oven has packed up and that you'll need it to be replaced pronto!

topcat2014 · 25/12/2018 07:49

You should be able to find an instruction book for the microwave (as a PDF) if you type the model name into google :)

If you're near Manchester I have a slow cooker you can borrow.

Bouledeneige · 25/12/2018 07:51

It could be the auto setting or that by mistake you've flicked the main power switch for the oven? (I did this once and went round and borrowed my neighbours oven till I worked out my mistake). Do think about asking the neighbours too.

You could also saute the potatoes on the hob so they crisp up.

Magentaorwagenta · 25/12/2018 07:54

You are all so lovely! I am near reading but my lovely neighbour has offered to lend me their kitchen as going out so I think the day is saved . Tried to cook the chicken in the microwave but the wheels wouldn't turn under the weight of it!!

If the oven clock is flashing, then the oven will not come on - so if you manage to set the clock (to any time) then you should be ok.

my bastard oven does the same thing

sashh · 25/12/2018 07:55
  1. do you have a slow cooker? Use it for the gammon

  2. where are you, my oven is not being used today

  3. my combi microwave has a 'chicken' setting - it take 30 mins

Magentaorwagenta · 25/12/2018 07:55

Thanks Mumsnet. I'm a separated parent with no family nearby. You've really supported me in a tricky moment thank you. Unmumsnetty hugs and a happy Xmas to all xxx

Does your oven have a conventional setting as well as a fan oven setting? If it does you can cook everything on that. Conventional setting should be two lines one on top of the other

ResistanceIsNecessary · 25/12/2018 07:56

Yay for the neighbour! Roasties on the hob recipe

sashh · 25/12/2018 07:58

Yay, glad it is all sorted.

Ours went last year, thankfully after we had cooked, but I never got my part-cooked rolls.

My oven won’t work until I press all those fiddly little buttons at the same time. I have to lay my finger across them, and hey presto it works. Give it a whirl op.

Wolfiefan · 25/12/2018 08:58

Yay to your neighbour! Wishing you a lovely Christmas OP. Good luck with the lunch.

callymarch · 25/12/2018 09:31

Check the fuse in the plug

callymarch · 25/12/2018 09:33

Ignore my comment just seen your pictures and the lights wouldn't be working if the fuse is blown
