Shutdowns, military pullouts, and resignations: it’s Christmas and Trump thread 89

It’s chaos in Trump’s world, more so than usual, with #TrumpResign trending in Twitter after a number of key debacles: the pull-out of US troops from Syria, the resignation of General Jim Mattis, and the shutdown of the government over Christmas due to bipartisan disagreement over wall funding. (Those are just 3 issues.) The next few weeks will be rocky.

Acting AG Matt Whitaker had breakfast at the Willard Hotel this AM with former AG Ed Meese, who tells me Whitaker told him John Huber continues his investigation into various FBI-related concerns raised in the last year by GOP lawmakers, including claims of improper surveillance

Matthew Miller
@matthewamiller
Why is the AG giving updates to a private citizen about the status of an ongoing investigation?

So much I'm not understanding but Trump pushing Putin's expansionist agenda seems straight forward ish. Rachel Maddow on why Trump's reframing of Russian/USSR/Afghanistan history may not have been Trump getting it wrong.

The USSR was right to be in Afghanistan?! Not even Russia says this anymore! Has Trump forgotten which country he sold out to?

But then:

Just learned from

that Putin's party IS seeking to rewrite the history of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan! And our president just echoed the same. Amazing. I had no idea from where Trump had picked up this crazy idea. Now I have a theory. Thanks Rachel.

Here are the segments from tonight's show about Donald Trump's strange fluency in Russian propaganda:

X post!

Minimammoth · 04/01/2019 11:18

Someone gave him a history book for Christmas, thus his amazing realisation that Russia used to be the USSR.
Russian History for Dummies. Perhaps

Gumpendorf · 04/01/2019 11:59

I think that's what everyone thought initially mini. But it looks more sinister than that. Trump is parroting the revisionist Russian perspective/ propaganda against the established view of history. He can only have got that from his Russian handlers.

Meanwhile, someone with values, and a background. Go Nancy!

Reporter: Is there any situation in which you would accept even a dollar of wall funding for this president in order to reopen the government?

Speaker Pelosi: A dollar.

Background = backbone. Confused

Minimammoth · 04/01/2019 12:34

Gump sound v v bad indeed. C’mon Nancy.
I am in awe of how sharp she is at 78. My brain is blurry already.

Roussette · 04/01/2019 13:25

Yes and doesn't she look fabulous! I'm an old 'un and really don't think I could keep up with a punishing work schedule now. Apparently she burns the midnight oil when she needs to getting votes etc.

Gumpendorf · 04/01/2019 13:31

I'm an oldie too and she's my new role model. Smile

Meanwhile Trump is up and lying tweeting

How do you impeach a president who has won perhaps the greatest election of all time, done nothing wrong (no Collusion with Russia, it was the Dems that Colluded), had the most successful first two years of any president, and is the most popular Republican in party history 93%?

Every statement in that tweet is a lie.

MerdedeBrexit · 04/01/2019 13:33

Although, as I've said before, I'm a huge admirer of Nancy Pelosi and her stamina, I am wondering where all the "young" people are on both sides of the House? President Obama aged visibly during his 8 years - is there no-one else as youthful and efficient as him around nowadays (obviously not including Trump's extended family and any of their attempts at nepotism and inherited dictatorship)?

Minimammoth · 04/01/2019 13:47

The ‘greatest of all time’ claims for everything Trumpish, is beginning to wear don’t you think. Hope it’s not just me.

Paul Whelan, the U.S. ex-Marine held in Russia on espionage charges, is also a citizen of Ireland. He has sought consular assistance from the four (!) countries where he holds passports.

May help explain why the State Dept. response has been muted so far

Scott Dworkin on Twitter:

Ex-Bush Adviser says "Trump will use his presidency as a bargaining chip with federal and state authorities in 2019, agreeing to leave office in exchange for the relevant authorities not pursuing criminal charges against him, his children or the Trump Organization." #TrumpResign

Roussette · 04/01/2019 14:47

oh heck yes mini.. why the fuck does he think it was 'the greatest election of all time'?? Why, just why? He lost the popular vote. He's a deluded fool.

I'm sick of the best, the biggest, the most, the most popular, the most handsome military, the most clever... all that shit.

His supporters must be short on brain cells to believe all this crap. Even Sarah Sanders is spouting it today...

Asked about Tlaib's profane call for Trump's impeachment, Sanders says, "You will not impeach this president when he's had 2 of the most successful years in modern history. They only come after him b/c they know they can't beat him... That is not the goodness of our country."

C’mon Nancy. I am in awe of how sharp she is at 78.

I had just realised that (and come here to comment on it). I suddenly thought she was too old for 2020, but then she does seem much more high energy than the Orange Duck.
