Democrats win the House, and he’s already fired Sessions: Trump thread 87

We start this new thread on a brighter note: the mid-terms were a win for the Democrats, securing the House of Representatives and further seats in the Senate. This means more scrutiny for POTUS and the GOP, and bargaining power.

He’s still a feckless, vain bully, oddly admired by some varieties of Christians - enjoy the cartoon by Mike Luckovich.

I saw your Governor Elect's twitter tributes, Across. I reckon you can live on those?

Quantumblue · 12/11/2018 01:17

It will be interesting to see how he reacts to the new political landscape and please God the indictment of Don Jr .

Shriek · 12/11/2018 01:27

Was I wrong to think he could be ousted during the mid-terms?

PerkingFaintly · 12/11/2018 01:34

Checking in, Brew in hand.

Shriek · 12/11/2018 01:52

Hi Perking...do you know?

TheClaws · 12/11/2018 02:13

Ivanka Trump’s brand has just bought the trademark in China for a number of interesting things, but the most interesting - and potentially concerning - is a trademark for voting machines. (Yes, even though her brand is “shut down”, it is still receiving trademarks. Dodgy.)

Gavin Newsom is pretty awesome, cozie. I'd want him to run in 2020 except I don't want to lose him here!

Shriek · 12/11/2018 03:13

Does anyone know?

lionheart · 12/11/2018 05:44

Can't remember if anyone posted the orginal NRA tweet that provoked so many responses:

NRA

@NRA

'Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane. Half of the articles in Annals of Internal Medicine are pushing for gun control. Most upsetting, however, the medical community seems to have consulted NO ONE but themselves.'

Extra Sparkles for the new thread Glitterball

Roussette · 12/11/2018 07:11

I find this gobsmacking... is it is bad as our proportional representation??

Here, via @anneapplebaum, is exactly what's coming. "He will try to break the institutions." These include the press. But that institution isn't ready for any of this. It's still telling itself, "we're not at war, we're at work."

Thanks for the new thread Claws. Very well observed cartoon Thanks

Gumpendorf · 12/11/2018 07:36

@Shriek. Yes you were wrong Smile. Trump wasn't on the ballot during the mid terms so he could not have been ousted.

Minimammoth · 12/11/2018 07:49

Looking forward to more balance, and diminishing the orange one. C’mon Mueller.

PerkingFaintly · 12/11/2018 08:21

Beg your pardon, Shriek, I checked in and then, er, checked out again before noticing your post.

Yes, as Gumpendorf says, "president" wasn't a position being voted for at the mid-terms. Another two years till the next presidential election.

Or did you mean ousted by some other means? Smile

Now the Democrats have a majority in the House of Congress, IIUC they get to chair important committees like the House Intelligence Committee, which was supposed to be investigating Russian interference but was pulling its punches.

Gumpendorf when my internet was down last week I had to watch telly to catch up with the results.Shock

And I was really struck by how NOT with programme many of the TV presenters were. They really don't seem to have understood that they are dealing with someone and something completely different from what they've ever seen inhabiting their top office.

As the Pavlovitz piece said, the US is not used to living under malevolent, unhinged dictators.

I'm reminded of a line from Buffy when Xander's best friend has been vampirized: "You have to remember, you're not looking at your friend any more; you're looking at the thing that killed your friend."

The US has to remember it's not looking at the head of its democracy; it's looking at the thing that intends to kill its democracy.

I’m waiting for this revelation to hit the MAGA community. That won’t be pretty. It’s still all unicorns over there. In truth, I really don’t think they wish for an authoritarian dictatorship, even if it was led by Donald Trump.

OP posts:
PerkingFaintly · 12/11/2018 09:23

I think a lot of the MAGA community do want an authoritarian dictatorship. They imagine he's going to be their dictator.

Pastor Niemöller began by supporting Adolf Hitler. What we know as his poem is his literal description of what happened.

Like most Protestant pastors, Niemöller was a national conservative, and openly supported the conservative opponents of the Weimar Republic. He thus welcomed Hitler's accession to power in 1933, believing that it would bring a national revival.
[...]
Stein reports having asked Niemöller why he ever supported the Nazi Party, to which Niemöller replied:

"I find myself wondering about that too. I wonder about it as much as I regret it. Still, it is true that Hitler betrayed me. I had an audience with him, as a representative of the Protestant Church, shortly before he became Chancellor, in 1932. Hitler promised me on his word of honor, to protect the Church, and not to issue any anti-Church laws. He also agreed not to allow pogroms against the Jews, assuring me as follows: 'There will be restrictions against the Jews, but there will be no ghettos, no pogroms, in Germany.'

"I really believed, given the widespread anti-Semitism in Germany, at that time—that Jews should avoid aspiring to Government positions or seats in the Reichstag. There were many Jews, especially among the Zionists, who took a similar stand. Hitler's assurance satisfied me at the time. On the other hand, I hated the growing atheistic movement, which was fostered and promoted by the Social Democrats and the Communists. Their hostility toward the Church made me pin my hopes on Hitler for a while.

"I am paying for that mistake now; and not me alone, but thousands of other persons like me."
