Democrats win the House, and he’s already fired Sessions: Trump thread 87

We start this new thread on a brighter note: the mid-terms were a win for the Democrats, securing the House of Representatives and further seats in the Senate. This means more scrutiny for POTUS and the GOP, and bargaining power.

He’s still a feckless, vain bully, oddly admired by some varieties of Christians - enjoy the cartoon by Mike Luckovich.

The poem again, that we're so familiar with:

First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out –
Because I was not a Communist.

Then they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out –
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out –
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out –
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me, and there was no one left
To speak out for me.

But I don't hang out much in MAGA circles. The Claws, I think you read more MAGA stuff online (so that I don't have to – thank you), so I hope that I'm wrong and you're right.

I hope I'm only picking up the extreme edge, and there are actually lots of people who thought MAGA sounded a nice idea but are appalled by what 45 and team are actually doing.

Gumpendorf · 12/11/2018 09:54

I think a lot of the MAGA community do want an authoritarian dictatorship.

I think they see it as a strong leader. Someone who stands up for them. They have had 8 years of Fox News telling them that Obama was weak and his interests lay outside the US.

On the press thing, Katy Tur did a piece for MSNBC a few days before the elections. She spoke to people at a Trump rally - articulate people who spewed the whole conspiracy, fake news agenda and said the only media person they trusted to tell the truth was Tucker Carlson. Confused

Her conclusion was that the media shouldn't be dismissing them as crackpots but trying to speak to them. The media after all are in it to make money.

I posted the link on the previous thread. I'll try and find it but I have a train to catch Smile

Gumpendorf · 12/11/2018 10:09

I post with comments that I'm ambivalent about Katy Tur as a presenter. She sees rather more interested in Katy Tur imo. Smile
Also the way the comments are cut makes me suspicious. Nonetheless she was on MSNBC and she had a point to make Smile

Gumpendorf · 12/11/2018 10:09

sees = seems

TheClaws · 12/11/2018 10:51

I think Gump is more on the money - they want a strong, patriotic leader. They might spout the word ‘nationalistic’ without understanding its full import. A dictator - a ruthless leader - is a step too far.

Beg your joint pardons, I think I melded you two in my mind, TheGump.Blush

(It's just taken me three attempts to make a cup of tea, so it's clearly one of those days when I shouldn't be trying to drive a keyboard either!)

It's Mar-A-Lago season. The FAA has issued its seasonal warning for President Trump's travel to his private West Palm Beach, Fla. club. faasafety.gov/files/notices/… Per FAA TFR notice, his first trip is scheduled for Nov. 20-25 (Thanksgiving)

Thanks perking & gump I was hoping he could be ousted as a result of the mid terms bringing in new and stronger candidates against him.

Disgusting behaviour pulling out of armistice because of rain, has he not heard of umbrellas! Mind you looking at that photo, i could see why he wouldnt want to risk it! Mmm priorities. More proud of his hair, when dry.

Week??? WELL!!!!

Lweji · 12/11/2018 16:12

I do prefer systems where governments and parliaments change immediately or within a few days.
How do GOP still have so much time to cause damage, knowing they will be out?

chicken2015 · 12/11/2018 16:51

So i have been following from begining, im in uk so not directly linked but am really concerned about how this effects the world etc. I do tend to be obsessive over things so have read so much over the last 2 years. Ive just become really down over it last few days ( am pregnant so possibly hormones!) Ended up chatting to trunp supporter on twitter and it has just depressed me how much she is brainwashed. Just using trump and fox sound bites, ive been really effected by parents being separated from children and watched john olivers report on it with the child going through trauma. It was heart breaking , and this trump supported justified it. I probably need to take step back and not read for few days but like car crash i cant move away from. How do people get through it

lettuceWrap · 12/11/2018 16:58

Thanks for the new thread Claws Smile

PerkingFaintly · 12/11/2018 16:59

Flowers chicken.

You've got it right: step back for a few days. Have a break. It's really important to rest and refresh your mind amid all that's going on. It will, alas, probably all still be here when you come back...

chicken2015 · 12/11/2018 17:11

Thanks for reply. Yes i should its just so hard to keep away. Twitter is so additive! Its not all trump on my twitter also

PerkingFaintly · 12/11/2018 17:34

Uff. Well, chicken and any one else exhausted might want to skip this one.

It's a very thorough article about far-right terrorists in the UK, following today's conviction in Birmingham Crown Court.

Turns out many of the individual court cases I remember – some, sadly, because of actual attacks – are actually linked to the same set of organisers or inspirers. As formal organisations, they're now banned under several of their names, inc "National Action" and "Scottish Dawn." But of course the personal networks remain, regardless of the organisations being proscribed.

I think it's slightly relevant to these threads because these groups feed off similar groups internationally, and seek international inspiration. It's as well to keep an eye on what's happening in the UK as well as the US.
