To think if Andrew had been caught cheating instead of Fergie...

...they would have worked it out and still be married?

Speculation about them remarrying has been in the papers again today. I don’t see it happening - but I can’t help thinking they sacrificed their marriage for the public image of the Royal Family. A Royal wife couldn’t be seen to get away with infidelity, even if the marriage was salvageable. However, had Andrew been papped sucking some tart’s toes instead of vice versa, I reckon Fergie would have been forced down the ‘dignified silence’ route - and perhaps the marriage would have survived as a result.

Obviously I know nothing about them personally, and the press picture could be very different to the reality. But I find it interesting to wonder if Fergie paid the price for being a woman and the ‘incomer’ - and indeed, if Andrew also effectively paid the price for his position and public image, whereas a layman might have worked to forgive his wife.

They'd already split by then hadn't they?

Urbanbeetler · 10/11/2018 08:49

You have no idea what happened before they split, and who cheated on whom.

ChocolateTearDrops · 10/11/2018 08:51

Sorry, I got to some tart’s toes and decided not to read on. Hmm

Hoppinggreen · 10/11/2018 08:52

A friend of ours married a vair posh woman who’s Titled Dad happens to be friends with Prince Andrew ( I know this bit at least is true as he came to their wedding, I saw him)
According to her it would have been a MUCH bigger scandal if Andrew had been caught cheating as it wouldn’t have been with a woman!
No idea if that’s true or not though

MatildaTheCat · 10/11/2018 08:52

Yes, they’d already separated. Officially I think because she couldn’t stand living in the public glare. The senior royals really didn’t like her- considered her vulgar.

For some very strange reason she seems to love him and I believe they live as if married anyway.

The royals have some strange ways.

CoughLaughFart · 10/11/2018 08:53

You have no idea what happened before they split, and who cheated on whom.

Which is exactly why I phrased it as her having been ‘caught cheating’ rather than ‘having cheated’. Of course he could have cheated too and not been caught.

But yes Costa, you’re right that they’d split before Toegate - although she’d been caught out with Steve Wyatt while they were still married.

But you decided to comment anyway to signal how you’re so far above such comments.

Was Fergie caught "sucking some tart's toes" then?

It's a valid point to call you out on that misogynistic phrasing. Especially given you are pointing out misogynistic behaviour in the royal family.

SpaceCannotBeLeftBlank · 10/11/2018 08:58

Allegedly Prince Andrew is as gay as a rainbow.

CoughLaughFart · 10/11/2018 09:00

What makes you so sure I don’t think Fergie’s bloke was a tart?

highlandcoo · 10/11/2018 09:04

From what I hear (from a friend who's a journalist in London and says there's lots of stuff that has never come out) Fergie has actually been very loyal and discreet given what Andrew's been up to over the years.

fredleighton · 10/11/2018 09:08

I have some very loose connections to the royal family. From everything I've heard Hoppinggreen is right. It's a pretty open secret.

andthelightshoneonandon · 10/11/2018 09:08

@CoughLaughFart

I laughed when I read “some tart’s toes” because I knew it would have Mumsnet up in arms Grin

YeOldeTrout · 10/11/2018 09:13

They were super unhappy before the toes in pool incident.

Hoppinggreen · 10/11/2018 09:18

fred I’ve also heard that it’s why he is so “loyal” to her, he darent risk upsetting her too much in case she spills the beans

owlshooting · 10/11/2018 09:29

In this day and age, if he's gay, why is it a big secret?

Fallingout · 10/11/2018 09:33

If that’s true, it’s terribly sad.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 10/11/2018 09:34

The royal family is decades behind everyone else.
A cousin of the Queen has only just married his partner.
Anyone close to the throne is expected to just keep up appearances.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 10/11/2018 09:36

I think People would have a lot of respect for him if he came out as gay.
However he is also a bit of a pompous ass, so probably not prepared to be the poster boy for LGBT.

AamdC · 10/11/2018 09:36

It really shouldntt be a big deal if he is gay , Im old enough tp remember all the Randy Andy headlines all a big cover?

CoughLaughFart · 10/11/2018 09:36

I think if he was a 21 year-old wanting to come out now, it could actually happen. But I don’t believe it could have happened in 1986 when he got married - just as I highly doubt a Royal would have married someone of mixed race at that time.

The word tart is misogynistic. It is used purely to describe females.

longwayoff · 10/11/2018 09:38

Not a secret is it hopping? But yes, I think she would have happily got on with being Royal. Wouldn't be first or last to have such an arrangement.

fourquenelles · 10/11/2018 09:38

I always thought Fergie was thrown under the bus to deflect from the Charles and Diana divorce and make that seem less awful.

SerenDippitty · 10/11/2018 09:39

Once Philip dies, one of two things will happen - Andrew and Fergie will remarry, or Andrew will come out.

If he is gay, and has been forced to live in denial all his life because of who he is, then that is bloody disgraceful.
