to think a ‘standard’ doughnut contains jam?

If you were offered a doughnut without being told the type, what kind would you automatically think of?

I think jam is standard, dsis thinks a sugar ring doughnut.

Dh said a custard doughnut would come to mind first. Wtf?! I’m assuming he’s taking the piss Grin

Doughnuts are surely rings of dough with sugar only.

HoneyWheeler · 29/09/2018 19:54

Sugar ring. A doughnut with jam is called a jam doughnut in our house!

Slapbetcommissioner · 29/09/2018 19:54

I would assume ring doughnut. Your DH is bonkers LTB Grin

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 29/09/2018 19:54

Nope, standard is a ring donut. Donuts with jam are jam donuts. And now I want one!

Nissemand · 29/09/2018 19:54

Ring, with proper sugar.

Anything else needs warning about.

museumum · 29/09/2018 19:55

Ring. Definitely.
A jam donut needs to be specified.

Lucked · 29/09/2018 19:55

Sugar ring. I would expect a jam donut to be called a jam donut.

Leeds2 · 29/09/2018 19:55

I think a ring doughnut too.

Although I would prefer a custard one.

Justnoclue · 29/09/2018 19:55

A standard donut is a ring donut with sugar. Fact.

PoxAlert · 29/09/2018 19:58

I'd imagine it differs person to person based on what they had as a child.

My grandparents would get jam donuts (felt like) once a week and never any other sort. So to me that was a donut. So is my first thought.

Didn't have ring ones very frequently. But always loved the yellow and brown "donut" ring ones when on holiday in Spain. Still always get a box now when away too! Love those.

MamaRaisingBoys · 29/09/2018 19:59

Well that’s that then Grin

I am wrong. I automatically think of a jam one first! Although my favourite doughnuts ever were from secondary school with melted chocolate in the middle 😋

donkeysandzebras · 29/09/2018 19:59

I disagree with a lot of PP as I was brought up thinking a "doughnut" was a jam doughnut as that was what my grandma made when she made doughnuts and what was provided by the school when doughnut was on the menu and Jamie Oliver hadn't been born. Since the advent of Krispy Kreme, I always clarify what is being offered when I am asked if I want a doughnut.

Poppins2016 · 29/09/2018 20:00

The 'default' is definitely a jam doughnut, for me!

Sainsbury's or M&S jam doughnuts are the best... Must be freshly bought that day... Mmm....

I see ring doughnuts (donuts?!) as American style imposters...

bridgetreilly · 29/09/2018 20:00

Ring doughnut, though would not be surprised if it turned out to be a jam doughnut.

Custard doughnuts are the work of the devil.

sittingonacornflake · 29/09/2018 20:00

I agree with you OP

MaisyPops · 29/09/2018 20:02

I'm with you OP.
If someone said they were getting a donut then I would think of the small ones with jam in them that you get in bags of 5 in the supermarket.

MamaRaisingBoys · 29/09/2018 20:03

Sainsburys jam doughnuts are what prompted this debate poppins

I’m resisting the left over one calling my name atm

MamaRaisingBoys · 29/09/2018 20:05

Glad to see people who agree with me have turned up! Was starting to think I was odd!

OP posts:
CherryPavlova · 29/09/2018 20:05

Jam. Definitely.

Fatted · 29/09/2018 20:05

Nope, basic is a ring.

Although custard is the best by a mile

Kimchi · 29/09/2018 20:06

Slightly related but not in answer to the question... the ‘jam’ in donuts is usually not jam. It is cheap apple purée that has colouring and an strawberry flavouring in it.

jarhead123 · 29/09/2018 20:06

I'm with you. A ring donut is a poor mans donut IMO. Jam is standard. Your DH is weird lol

pumkinspicetime · 29/09/2018 20:06

Ring is standard, jam would need to be stated OP.

CherryPavlova · 29/09/2018 20:07

Unless you buy them from those rather fun automatic doughnut machines at seaside fun fair when it’s a rin.

Loyaultemelie · 29/09/2018 20:07

Definitely a gravy ring as standard (although tbf I'd much prefer a jam or custard one!)
