to think a ‘standard’ doughnut contains jam?

If you were offered a doughnut without being told the type, what kind would you automatically think of?

I think jam is standard, dsis thinks a sugar ring doughnut.

Dh said a custard doughnut would come to mind first. Wtf?! I’m assuming he’s taking the piss Grin

I also really like the podcast as an aside.

Yummy. All doughnuts are yummy in my book.

But probably jam. When someone brings doughnuts into the office the most common is jam, though not by a big margin.

KlutzyDraconequus · 29/09/2018 20:51

I think I've become Americanised and I think of the ring donuts like in the Simpsons.. 🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩

cornflakegirl · 29/09/2018 20:51

Jam doughnut.
Fortunately is brilliant, and Anneka's reaction to the chocolate doughnuts was most amusing.

PastaRedWine · 29/09/2018 20:53

Jam!!! They are the only ones possible to make at home with standard everyday kitchen equipment. I have made them loads and loads.

I couldn't make a ring one at home without buying specific stuff/equipment.

Therefore a jam one is the standard one!

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 29/09/2018 20:56

I will pick the splinters out of my arse later but I am firmly in the middle with this.

To me a standard doughnut is a ring doughnut (gravy ring in this house too) but to DH it is definitely filled with jam, and jam ones also seem to be standard where we live in the NE Scotland, so if someone offered me one I would expect them to offer me a jam one (and I would be bitterly disappointed - nothing better than a gravy ring still hot straight off the wee conveyor belt thingy in the bakery)

LesLavandes · 29/09/2018 20:56

I come from Ireland and we always called the rings with hole in middle 'Gravy Rings'. Now don't ask me why please. It sounds mad😊. A donut always had jam in it!

Acrasia · 29/09/2018 20:56

Order of doughnut goodness:

  1. Bag of holy shit these are hot seaside ring doughnuts
  2. Can you eat it without licking your lips jammy doughnuts
  3. Custard/Chocolate/Apple filled doughnuts
  4. American/Krispy Kreme style donuts
bourbonbiccy · 29/09/2018 20:57

Definitely a jam one, and I agree with @Poppins2016 with regards to round ones with sugar on.

And sorry ...a custard one ...just no !!! Lol

ShockedHorrored · 29/09/2018 20:58

I fecking love doughnuts. I’d think of a jam doughnut but just because I loves ‘em. I can see how a ring doughnut would be the standard doughnut.

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 29/09/2018 20:58

LesLavandes it’s because hot oil used to be known as gravy.

BreconBeBuggered · 29/09/2018 20:59

Stupomax, I've been clutching my pearls the whole way through. And I don't even like doughnuts that much.

SalemBlackCat · 29/09/2018 21:01

Cinnamon doughnut. Doughnuts with jam are not actually doughnuts. Same for custard. Doughnuts are either cinnamon or chocolate/strawberry glazed. Those are the only actual doughnuts.

iamyourequal · 29/09/2018 21:04

A ‘standard, doughnut would be a sugared ring doughnut. They are nice from independent bakeries but crap from supermarkets, where they don’t seem to have the correct dough. The dough should be light with big air bubbles in it. I think supermarket ones are really dense and lack flavour. I always wonder if they just use bicarbonate as a raising agent instead of yeast. It would be great if a professional baker could jump on this thread and tell me! Smile

Stupomax · 29/09/2018 21:06

I was a bit worried standards were slipping - you've set my mind at rest Grin

KnotsInMay · 29/09/2018 21:15

A doughnut is a ring
A jam doughnut has jam
A big custard doughnut from the Portuguese bakery is the best.

whatareyoueatingNOW · 30/09/2018 08:32

I think ring , dh thinks jam- and is annoyed that I asked him this without having either option to hand. Poor sod woke himself up properly and came downstairs in search of the doughnut I just offered him BlushGrin

Catmatrat · 30/09/2018 08:39

Ring donut with either sugar or icing I’d expect if someone just offered me a donut.

Ate 5 jam ones over two days earlier in the week. Those little critters are addictive!

As an aside ... the word donut becomes ridiculous if you read/type it too much.

LiquoricePickle · 30/09/2018 09:15

Hmm. I'd automatically think of jam, but agree that a ring is probably standard. Your husband has good tastes in doughnuts though!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 30/09/2018 09:18

Jam, I mean who even bothers with a ring?
As for custard, just bleurgh....

ushuaiamonamour · 30/09/2018 09:21

When young I lived in US, so to me a proper doughnut is a ring, usually with icing or a sugar glaze. And it is yeast-risen. Yeast. Please, yeast. If it doesn't have that it's a 'cake doughnut' and unworthy. Only the East European bakers here cook worthy, yeast-risen doughnuts. If the pastry hasn't a hole and is filled with jam/custard it's what Yanks (at least in some regions) call a Bismarck.

Yeast. And did I mention sour cream? For flip's sake unless you're Italian, all worthy cheesecake has sour cream in it. I'd better not get started on bagels, I suppose.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 30/09/2018 09:24

I haven't had a doughnut for ages!

Doughnut - O covered in sugar
Jam doughnut - red jam
Custard doughnut - abomination
Jam donut muffin - definitely worth a try

Cauliflowersqueeze · 30/09/2018 09:27

Yes jam doughtnut as standard OP definitely.

My favourite is plain Krispy Kreme ring though.

And it’s DOUGHNUT not DONUT

Joinourclub · 30/09/2018 09:30

Jam.

I feel cheated by a ring. Especially if it’s a crappy Krispy Kreme.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 30/09/2018 09:30

I dont like Krispy Kreme. We used to get them free in one place I worked and i still didn't like them.
