'Is Brett Kavanaugh Damaged Goods?
The Supreme Court's newest justice will take to the bench after a brutal confirmation battle. Can he overcome it?'

'The Coming Kavanaugh Court Doctrine: Democrats Are Unconstitutional.
Brett Kavanaugh promised, "What goes around comes around." What does that mean for cases that help Republicans and hurt Democrats at the ballot box?'

Collins had lunch with SmugConnell before she took to the floor. No doubt Smugly had some 'suggestions' for the content of the speech and it's hardly subtle staging, with Capito and Hyde-Smith as window dressing:
'Susan Collins’ Bad Faith.
Her pro-Kavanaugh speech on the Senate floor was an insult to Americans’ intelligence.'

Lion, I find that Kelly Anne piece disturbing on a number of levels.

The suggestion that women’s reproductive rights are somehow inherently a left wing topic, suggesting planned parenthood is using tax payer’s money to fund/support the democrats, the suggestion that women make frivolous reproductive choices (pretty much saying women can’t be trusted to make sound, logical choices).

It always strikes me as being absolutely stupid that those (right wing, pro life types) who want to stop other people accessing abortion also want to limit access to contraception!

lionheart · 07/10/2018 18:26

It is disturbing and stupid and just illogical.

lionheart · 07/10/2018 20:53

I'm sure it will play well with the base.

'“When you invest in a black woman, she brings her house, her block, her church and her story,” said Glynda C. Carr, co-founder of Higher Heights, one of the many organizations that have sprung up to foster black women’s political leadership.'

I do feel quite despondent at the moment. All our comedic exaggerations when 45 first ran have turned out to be prophetic. The good ol' boys have won and will implement their antiwomen agenda.

ohmymimi · 08/10/2018 08:08

From the Intercept piece, lion's link above:
'The Council for National Policy, which operates covertly and brings together faith-based conservatives to discuss political strategy, was holding a planning meeting in a second-floor ballroom at the Westin hotel in Charlotte when the Senate confirmed President Donald Trump’s second Supreme Court pick by a 50-48 vote. ....
....... The agenda for the event featured a veritable who’s who of Christian conservatives, including Ginni Thomas, the spouse of Justice Clarence Thomas; U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley; former Sen. Jim DeMint, the former president of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank; pollster Frank Luntz; and Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who is seeking a leadership role in the House after Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., retires this year.

What is it so many of these 'faith based conservatives' have in common (apart from ignoring the basic tenets of the religion they claim to follow)?
Gym Jordan's recent involvement in a huge sexual abuse scandal seems to have been conveniently brushed aside, with no consequence to him. Cain's sexual harassment past came out during his 2012 presidential run. And he was such a stellar candidate tooHmm

I've started a thread suggesting US voters check they're registered, especially after over-enthusiastic vote-purging:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3387988-Are-you-a-US-voter-Especially-in-Georgia

Alarmingly, IIUC people apparently only have till TOMORROW, Tuesday 9 October, to check and if necessary re-register.

AcrossthePond55 · 08/10/2018 14:13

Thanks for the reminder, Perking. I double checked and I'm good. Permanent vote-by-mail ballots start being mailed out on Wednesday here.

Reminder on this thread that you can check with your local county election board. Most allow you to check your status online.

AcrossthePond55 · 08/10/2018 14:18

Posted a link on the other thread but I'll put it here, too.

For California;

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/10/2018 15:27

I have been following this thread and the ones before it for ages, thanks to all who have posted links and helped me to see what has been going on, and someone on another board posted a link which I found cheering and thought people here might like to see amid all the gloom surrounding everyone.

It's at twitter.com/SJPeace/status/1048270025134657536

cozietoesie · 08/10/2018 15:44

OK - as has been said Quantum.

Let's remind them

PerkingFaintly · 08/10/2018 15:53

That was awesome, AskingQuestions! Thank you!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/10/2018 15:57

I'm really glad you like it, PerkingFaintly. I've never posted here before and had to join, but I thought that link was important because it reminded me that not all American men are idiotic crothounds.

cozietoesie · 08/10/2018 16:23

Indeed......

Welcome to the thread. Smile

PerkingFaintly · 08/10/2018 16:40

We need a bit of light like that, in the darkness.

Across, hope you're doing OK...
