Thanks, Claws. Smile

This whole programme is good, as ever but there is such a good discussion on Hayes' 'All In' at around 35 mins in, between Jessica Valenti, Maya Wiley,

Cristina Beltran and Chris. I was thinking about this in the shower this morning and this expresses it much better than I could:

Yes, yes, quite agree about thread number, TheClaws.

I'd just got caught up in Lweji's suggestion that the "wrong" numbers just be used as unique identifiers, that's all.

Will stick to "correct" numbers from here on.

cozietoesie · 29/09/2018 10:47

It just feels like Number 239. Lordy.Grin

Lweji · 29/09/2018 11:08

Trying to catch up thanks to limited internet and unlimited work Wink. Currently visiting a country where former regime corrupt people are being arrested almost daily. It's inspiring! I wonder if the US will catch up with actual post holders soon.

Too many threads. Or rather, too much happening!

TheClaws · 29/09/2018 11:11

Oh, I see, sorry Perking! Since I was already confused, though, I think that would just confuse me more, and nobody wants that ...

Grin I hear ya!

lionheart · 29/09/2018 12:06

I've a feeling that his emotions were not simply about thwarted entitlement but what might happen with regard to any criminal proceedings.

PerkingFaintly · 29/09/2018 12:45

lionheart I so agree. The horrible, horrible pause when Kavanaugh was asked several times (by Kamala Harris?) if he would support or ask for an FBI investigation was Shock

That's when Lindsay Graham leapt in on his behalf. And according to Maddow, that's the point when the Repugs stopped yielding their time to their prosecutor.

Kavanaugh looks terrified at the idea of an FBI investigation into him. He must be relieved it's going to be deliberately limited in scope.

I'm guessing the Repugs or Trump have some inkling of what Kavanaugh is scared the FBI will find. Otherwise why the deliberate limitation of scope, as well as of time?

Combine that with the earlier refusal to release documents from his work history, followed by the last minute drop of 42,000 (was it?) docs...

The Repugs know there's stuff about this guy which makes him unappointable.

ohmymimi · 29/09/2018 12:50

I just wonder how much the Stinker effectively (for the moment!) getting away with blatant lies has educated Kav.'s behaviour in this process, and how much it is a practice of a lifetime, for which he has never been held accountable, Rousette. The first words out of mouth in his acceptance of nomination speech were a lie. They were obviously included to pander to Stinky (which itself is a huge red flag for his performance on SCOTUS). He did this for the whole world to hear, and he must have known it would be rigorously fact checked, but he felt secure and protected enough to do it, to please his most important audience. He must have known that the watching Dr F. lie would be known, had little to gain from it (it would be a natural, human thing to want to see and hear her). Maybe he had poor advice about what to say? He was obviously heavily coached, and seemed unable to deal with anything he could not answer by rote. Maybe he was in a state of panic that his carefully constructed world was crumbling, and as lion says, his vulnerability to prosecution. I hope we get to find out - I hate unresolved mysteriesSmile

Gumpendorf · 29/09/2018 13:26

I also hate unresolved mysteries mimi and i hope that whatever the FBI report makes sense with what we saw and heard.

I think we have had too many false dawns to be optimistic. Trump's latest tweet
Just started, tonight, our 7th FBI investigation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh. He will someday be recognized as a truly great Justice of The United States Supreme Court!
gives me cause for concern. Why did the previous 6 investigations find nothing and what makes us think this will be any different?

I'm not suggesting the FBI are hiding anything but that in all establishments there are deep cover ups. UK posters may know about how the establishment has covered up homosexuality (when it was illegal/career limiting) and child sex abuse. The US establishment seems to be as tightly drawn if you are seen to be 'one of us'.

As I say, the ease with which they all folded made me suspicious. I hope I'm wrong.

Gumpendorf · 29/09/2018 13:34

Just to add to my last post, Brian Williams' guests covered the possible extensiveness of the FBI investigation last night.

This is a very powerful ending. I keep thinking of Christine Blasey Ford - her bravery and genuineness. I hope we haven't heard the last of her.

'Graham’s defense of Kavanaugh has conservatives applauding. How long will that last?'
amp.thestate.com/news/politics-government/article219181770.html?__twitter_impression=true

I heard an interesting comment about Linski after his outrage act. A theory that, as a beta male, he always had the 'protection' of alpha McCain. It was when he started to lose that, as JM was failing, he went all in with another alpha, the Stinker, an even more powerful protector. I guess that is not the whole story (he seems ambitions for a cabinet post) but that is also a likely element.

ohmymimi · 29/09/2018 13:48

Thanks. Just got round watching Williams now, Gump.Smile

lionheart · 29/09/2018 13:49

Is he angling to be AG after Sessions?

TheNorthWestPawsage · 29/09/2018 13:55

‘I Got Into Yale’ Isn’t a Moral Defense
...Kavanaugh treated his education as a magic wand, something that could be waved to dispel questions of his conduct. Indeed, Americans have a particular fondness for meritocratic narratives, frequently conflating achievements and hard work with human worth. And as deserving as they tend to think the wealthy and accomplished are of their money and success, it’s likely that luck gets underrated as a cause of them, as the economist Robert Frank has argued. (The word meritocracy was actually coined satirically, in an attempt to show how cruel the world would be if the intelligent and accomplished received preferable treatment.)...

ohmymimi · 29/09/2018 13:57

Yes, Gump, very powerful.

I don't know if this has already been posted:
'Is Winning Women Enough for Democrats to Win the House?'
But, what is worrying many Democrats is that the enthusiasm they are seeing among women isn’t being replicated among another group of voters that theoretically should be as motivated — or more — to vote for Democrats: Latino voters.
This isn’t a new concern. Democratic strategists, as well as political analysts like Ron Brownstein and Josh Krashaaur, have been sending up warning flares for a while now. Latino voter drop-off in midterm elections is nothing new, but the thinking was that President Trump's rhetoric and policies around immigration, especially the issue of separating children from their parents at the border, would be a catalyst for higher Latino engagement in 2018. At this point, however, recent polling by New York Times Upshot/Siena College and Monmouth University, suggests that's not the case.

'Inside the failed secret mission to save the filibuster.
A group of senators secretly tried to negotiate an end to the Senate's decade-long judicial wars. But distrust ran too deep.'
A week before Republicans gutted the filibuster to put Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court, nine senators gathered in John McCain’s office to see whether they could save the Senate from spiraling further into disrepair.
In the room were centrists like Sens. Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), who spearheaded the effort to recruit enough senators to avoid the collision course their party leaders were on, as well as some lawmakers who had distanced themselves from such talks but were willing to listen, such as Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.).
Aides paced outside during the 30-minute midday meeting, hoping to keep away prying reporters. For several weeks, Coons had been asking himself whether the long-running tit-for-tat between the two parties over judicial nominations would ever end.
“Are we just going to sit here and pee on each others’ shoes for the rest of our adult lives?” Coons said of what spurred his bid to try and save the filibuster. “How does this ever get better?”

I find it pretty interesting that Trump has limited himself to one tweet per day yesterday and the day before. He’s being pretty careful right now. Or someone has his phone.

I wonder how much of his usual rapid fire, unhinged tweeting is a deliberate policy of “running radio interference” and not just him venting anger?

CaveMum · 29/09/2018 14:12

Thanks for the new thread.
