To think using the kitchen sink for this is revolting.

Essential a kitchen sink is a food prep area. It is for washing food, hands and plates. Maybe sluicing off things that are fairly clean (e.g. getting rid of the water from a flower vase) and filing water containers or attaching a hose.

I think the following are revolting -

  • washing babies (at some level you are washing off poo and wee)
  • washing pets (same as above)
  • brushing teeth (spitting in a food prep area)
  • emptying mop buckets (pour it down the toilet)
  • washing/dying/cutting hair in the kitchen- hair in food prep area
  • washing clothes and shoes in a food prep area.

All the things you've listed are for bathroom sinks or outside drains - I wouldn't do any of them in the kitchen sink!

BruceAndNosh · 22/08/2018 19:31

Utility sink for most of those

FuckyDuzz · 22/08/2018 19:31

But I don’t prep food in my sink?
If I’m rinsing any food off it’s in my hands or in a colander, I don’t put it on the bottom of the sink - do people do that I’ve never seen it? Confused

Rachie1973 · 22/08/2018 19:32

I’ve done most of those things in mine. Bleach is my friend!

Knittedfairies · 22/08/2018 19:32

I haven’t got a futility room.

Asdf12345 · 22/08/2018 19:32

I'd do all of those quite happily in a kitchen sink. Clean it properly afterwards and it is clean. Do you use different towels for your arse and your face after a shower?

OneOfEach2 · 22/08/2018 19:33

I've done most of these in mine... today 🤷‍♀️. I clean things in my kitchen sink, I don't prepare food in there.

YANBU but to each their own!

YourMilkshakeIsBetterThanMine · 22/08/2018 19:33

I've never done any of those things in the kitchen sink but I am lucky to have a downstairs loo, extra sink in the utility room plus an outdoor tap. I can imagine those with one bathroom may have many uses for their kitchen sink.

Haggisfish · 22/08/2018 19:34

I’d quite like a futility riomGrin

Permaexhaustion · 22/08/2018 19:34

Fortunately, my kitchen sink is stainless steel, so is perfectly cleanable.

Anyonewhoknows · 22/08/2018 19:34

I brush my teeth at the kitchen sink. Why is that so bad?

0h · 22/08/2018 19:35

Wouldn't think twice about doing all of that list!

Babies in sinks are the cutest! I was tiny for a very long time so was bathed in the kitchen sink for years and remember loving it. Sad times when I got too big. 😭

feral · 22/08/2018 19:35

As a student I found my trainee nurse housemate cleaning a toilet brush in the kitchen sink 🤢

apostropheuse · 22/08/2018 19:35

Of course you should wash babies in thw sink. The dishwasher takes too long.

ApolloandDaphne · 22/08/2018 19:35

I would do all of those things in a kitchen sink, i would just clean it properly afterwards.

Sparklingbrook · 22/08/2018 19:35

I don't do any of those things in the kitchen sink.

But I don't have a baby (way back when we had a baby bath) I use a washing machine for clothes and don't own a mop.
Cat doesn't need bathing

We have a dishwasher and an outside tap for the hose.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 22/08/2018 19:35

utility sink for most of these
Hahaha-typical mumsnet! Like everyone has a bloody utility room! Hmm

userofthiswebsite · 22/08/2018 19:36

I don't use the kitchen sink for those but I'd not worry much about the toothpaste one.

Notcontent · 22/08/2018 19:36

Hmm - in an ideal world I would have a utility room with a sink for various non food related jobs. However, I don't have room for that in my tiny house, so some jobs, such as emptying mop buckets, get done in the large kitchen sink, but the sink is then scrubbed clean.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/08/2018 19:36

Classic mumsnet Grin

butterflysugarbaby · 22/08/2018 19:36

Never do I ever do any of the things in the OP, at my kitchen sink.

Nor do I know anyone who does!

SoyDora · 22/08/2018 19:38

I have never prepped food in my kitchen sink.

maggienolia · 22/08/2018 19:38

Actually in elderly care you do use different towels for arse and face after showering.

If I washed the cat in the sink the next problem would be copious amounts of blood in it. Grin

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 22/08/2018 19:38

Even my mother brushes her teeth at the kitchen sink, and she's fairly obsessive about kitchen hygiene!

Also many utility rooms don't have a sink.

Porthcurnoqueen · 22/08/2018 19:39

I haven't done any of those things but I do t think all of them are disgusting.

I would wash a baby in the sink it's just I have no need.

I would brush my teeth if the bathroom was in use.

I wouldn't empty the mop bucket because I would feel a bit icky about that same with washing shoes.

Really though the sink can be cleaned afterwards so providing you bleach it before washing up in there it doesn't really matter?
