To think using the kitchen sink for this is revolting.

Essential a kitchen sink is a food prep area. It is for washing food, hands and plates. Maybe sluicing off things that are fairly clean (e.g. getting rid of the water from a flower vase) and filing water containers or attaching a hose.

I think the following are revolting -

  • washing babies (at some level you are washing off poo and wee)
  • washing pets (same as above)
  • brushing teeth (spitting in a food prep area)
  • emptying mop buckets (pour it down the toilet)
  • washing/dying/cutting hair in the kitchen- hair in food prep area
  • washing clothes and shoes in a food prep area.

Good thing you didn't live in the days of no bathrooms and only an outside loo. Everything was done at the kitchen sink. Everyone got washed there and cleaned their teeth there. Dirty clothes were washed there. Men shaved there. A bit of Ajax to scour the sink out every day worked wonders.

VioletCharlotte · 22/08/2018 20:00

I've done pretty much all those things in my kitchen sink! I don't prep food in my sink (does anyone?) and clean it regularly. No one's died yet.

pictish · 22/08/2018 20:01

Having an opinion on this, let alone a strong one indicates too much time and privilege on your hands.

Many human beings do everything they need to existing with a well and a bucket. Go and tell them how disgusting they are, I dare you.

Fucking stupid.

ladybee28 · 22/08/2018 20:01

This AMAZES me. Relax a little, no?!

This level of OTT bleach-ridden 'hygiene' fear is exactly why society is developing such a rash of low immune systems and bacterial imbalances – someone brushing their teeth in the kitchen sink is not going make a blind bit of difference to anything.

Chill. Out.

BruceAndNosh · 22/08/2018 20:01

utility sink for most of these
Hahaha-typical mumsnet! Like everyone has a bloody utility room! hmm

Pardon me for having utility room . I;m just stating what I would use.
Hmm
Hmm

RoseWhiteTips · 22/08/2018 20:01

YANBU. Doing things like that would be revolting.

pictish · 22/08/2018 20:02

And yes, yabu. It’s a fucking sink. Get a grip.

It is pretty snobby to assume people have a variety of different sinks.

I use the kitchen sink for pouring away mop water, washing wellies etc.

I did use the bath for washing Wellies once but my partner complained that the bath drain gets blocked up far more easily and wasn't designed for "lumpy" dirt and was told to use the kichen sink.

The kitchen sink is not a food preparation area!

ipswichwitch · 22/08/2018 20:05

I haven’t got a futility room.
Haha Knitted! I could have used a futility room today after trying for the umpteenth time to get DS2 to sit still and eat his dinner!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 22/08/2018 20:05

Of course you should wash babies in thw sink. The dishwasher takes too long

ShotsFired · 22/08/2018 20:06

@Permaexhaustion Fortunately, my kitchen sink is stainless steel, so is perfectly cleanable.

get you showing off your new fangled appliances Grin
next you'll be telling us about your hot and cold running water too.

Imagine having such a thing as a "cleanable sink"! Tomorrow's World missed that one!

Gncq · 22/08/2018 20:06

If you're chopping carrots into your kitchen sink then putting them on your salad you're doing it wrong.

I have a huge Belfast sink and it's a wonderous thing for doing all sorts of things in.

I'm also totally capable of cleaning it. I honestly think people are a bit precious these days about being ultra hygienic Hmm

crispysausagerolls · 22/08/2018 20:09

Don’t know why but the idea of my gorgeous baby in a horrible kitchen sink where all food and food waste is at times (potato skins etc) is the only reason I wouldn’t wash him in there!

Dljlr · 22/08/2018 20:10

Maybe take a wee break if this is making you so incensed pictish?

Just not in the sink, that's for food prep.

pictish · 22/08/2018 20:10

I should be incensed. We all should. It’s shameful that people are so fatuous they have time to worry about this crap.

RoseWhiteTips · 22/08/2018 20:10

First showers; now sinks.

HildaZelda · 22/08/2018 20:11

I'm a bit confused about why so many people brush their teeth in the kitchen sink? Would you not do this in the bathroom?

For what it's worth. I'd love a 'futility' room. I have none and my dryer is in the shed. First world problem I know!

Confusedbeetle · 22/08/2018 20:11

Good grief woman! Of course all of these things are ok. Most people only have one sink, Get a life

RoseWhiteTips · 22/08/2018 20:12

I have a fab Belfast sink too but would never use it for any of the purposes listed by the OP.

Naty1 · 22/08/2018 20:12

I dont do any except teeth.
Wouldnt want the baby in there (we dont use a bowl).
But also i dont really use bleach.

SoyDora · 22/08/2018 20:13

I’m surprised how many people are saying they brush their teeth in the kitchen sink. I can’t really see when this would ever be needed? Just do it in the bathroom!

HopeClearwater · 22/08/2018 20:13

Never do I think that the current explanation for the rise in allergies (ie over-cleaning and obsessive hygiene) is more plausible than when I am reading MN.

Thankfully our children still get exposed to plenty of germs while they are in our filthy primary schools.
