To think using the kitchen sink for this is revolting.

Essential a kitchen sink is a food prep area. It is for washing food, hands and plates. Maybe sluicing off things that are fairly clean (e.g. getting rid of the water from a flower vase) and filing water containers or attaching a hose.

I think the following are revolting -

  • washing babies (at some level you are washing off poo and wee)
  • washing pets (same as above)
  • brushing teeth (spitting in a food prep area)
  • emptying mop buckets (pour it down the toilet)
  • washing/dying/cutting hair in the kitchen- hair in food prep area
  • washing clothes and shoes in a food prep area.

It is a rite of passage for every child to have their parents dig out a "there he is in the kitchen sink" photograph on their 18th birthday.

I agree re mop buckets and those go down the toilet but a few days ago I held one of our rabbit's paws under the tap for a few seconds to wash off muck as she seemed to be limping. A scrub with hot water and Zoflora and you could eat your supper out of it.

My baby gets washing in mine. It's the perfect shape for him to sit up comfortably and play safer.
Bathroom sink is tiny, bath is too big. A nice inbetween is the kitchen sink.
I clean it after and it's not a big deal.
Got some super cute pictures of him splashing about in it Grin

HoleyCoMoley · 22/08/2018 19:42

I wash veg and fruit in a colander under running water. I wouldn't empty or clean out flower vases, the water carries all sorts of germs, I'd flush that down the loo. I'd wash a baby in a bowl in the sink if it was small enough otherwise I'd use a baby bath. I'd wash a pet in the bath.

Shartnado · 22/08/2018 19:42

I do or have done all of these things in the kitchen sink. I detol and thoroughly wipe down the sink after every use regardless of what I have used it for though.

Chouetted · 22/08/2018 19:42

Emptying a mop bucket into the kitchen sink is surely less grim than spilling a bucketful of dirty water down the stairs because you were trying to carry it to the toilet?

Especially if the stairs are carpeted.

alleypalley · 22/08/2018 19:43

YANBU. I'm quite laissez-faire when it comes to kitchen hygiene (eat things past BB date, leave stuff out overnight etc). But no I wouldn't do any of those things in my kitchen sink. Except maybe brush my teeth if I really needed to.

SawnUpLooRoll · 22/08/2018 19:45

How is brushing your teeth and spitting the toothpaste in the sink exposing your sink to anything different to the saliva off glasses/cups/cutlery when washing them in the sink?

NewtScamandersNaughtyNiffler · 22/08/2018 19:45

When I've mopped the bathroom I empty the bucket in the bathroom sink.
When I mop the kitchen I empty it in the kitchen sink.
I'm not faffing around carrying buckets of water up and down the stairs!

ForalltheSaints · 22/08/2018 19:46

Cleaning teeth may be OK, but none of the others the OP references.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 22/08/2018 19:48

I've done most of those in my kitchen sink......... It just gets bleached afterwards and the surfaces surrounding said sink, wiped down with bleach spray and a clean cloth

I'd be more concerned for those with toilets near their hand basin in the bathroom - imagine the splashbacks from the loo for people who don't put the lid down Wink I'm glad my toilet is in a separate room from my bath and hand basin :D

m0therofdragons · 22/08/2018 19:48

What food are people prepping in the sink? As long as you clean it you can do anything. Most people who don't have a utility room sink would probably rinse out the dc's sick bowl in the kitchen sink followed by bleach.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 22/08/2018 19:48

I think if you are unable to clean properly, OP, you're right to keep your sink for only food prep. Perhaps get someone to clean for you once a week? If you are using it for things like flower vase water (ie., rotten veg) or food prep such as meat, you need someone to help you clean things to a decent standard.

For anyone else, who is capable of cleaning up to a decent standard, obviously the other things in the OP would be no issue.

Mrsmadevans · 22/08/2018 19:49

Must confess l think l do all those except the floor bucket , l must be a filthy animal Xmas Grin

gamerchick · 22/08/2018 19:49

Utility sink for most of those

There's always one Grin

Porthcurnoqueen · 22/08/2018 19:49

I chuck the mop bucket water outside, is that wrong?

soulrider · 22/08/2018 19:50

I don't do any food prep in my sink so it's not really an issue but I think all of those things have less 'risk' than washing a chopping board that has been used to prepare raw meat/chicken.

HelpmeobiMN · 22/08/2018 19:51

Luckily once upon a time god invented cleaning products, immediately neutralising all of the above issues.

Mrsmadevans · 22/08/2018 19:51

Also when the DDS were tiny they used to sit in the sinks (double) together and bath and splash , they so enjoyed it . I cleaned their bums before they went in the sinks and l bleached the sinks after , never thought anything about it tbh.

puzzledlady · 22/08/2018 19:52

Until you pay my mortgage - you don’t get to say what I can and cannot do in my sink. Wink

legolammb · 22/08/2018 19:52

Yanbu. As an aside, I've noticed lots of American insta-mums doing the baby in the sink thing and wondered whether they have baby baths over there, or if they're not widely used - anyone know?

JessicaJonesJacket · 22/08/2018 19:53

If I'm washing plates, they're in a basin. They're not directly in the sink.
If I'm washing food, it's in a bowl or colander.
So I find it a bit disgusting that you do any of those things in the sink.

chillpizza · 22/08/2018 19:54

I only use my kitchen sink for the mop.. I have a dishwasher and separate veg drainer.

Ohyesiam · 22/08/2018 19:55

Well unless you never clean it, all those things should be fine.
Food doesn’t get very close to my sink.

“utility sink for most of these“

Ah yes, must install one of these right away. Hmm

You sound a bit paranoid, OP.

Only on MN do people worry about sink hygiene.
