To think using the kitchen sink for this is revolting.

Essential a kitchen sink is a food prep area. It is for washing food, hands and plates. Maybe sluicing off things that are fairly clean (e.g. getting rid of the water from a flower vase) and filing water containers or attaching a hose.

I think the following are revolting -

  • washing babies (at some level you are washing off poo and wee)
  • washing pets (same as above)
  • brushing teeth (spitting in a food prep area)
  • emptying mop buckets (pour it down the toilet)
  • washing/dying/cutting hair in the kitchen- hair in food prep area
  • washing clothes and shoes in a food prep area.

Aibu ?

  • washing babies (at some level you are washing off poo and wee) yabu babies are much cleaner than a dishcloth!
  • washing pets (same as above) Yanbu
  • brushing teeth (spitting in a food prep area) don’t understand why someone would do this but it isn’t dirty
  • emptying mop buckets (pour it down the toilet) what, if you’ve mopped the kitchen floor you should carry the mop bucket upstairs (over nice carpet) to the toilet??
  • washing/dying/cutting hair in the kitchen- hair in food prep area yabu hair is clean! How can hair drying dirty a sink?
  • washing clothes and shoes in a food prep area. Yabu kitchen sinks are where you are supposed to ha s wash your bras! Shoes- yes I wouldn’t put shoes in a kitchen sink

Aibu ? Yes! 90%

You’re revolting.

PintOfMineralWater · 22/08/2018 20:27

@notmenono

You let WORKMEN use your toilet? Shock They are riddled with germs you know!

Aaaahfuck · 22/08/2018 20:27

Lol we don't all have utility rooms!

InspectorIkmen · 22/08/2018 20:29

Everything pictish said.

OP is quite some considerable measure beyond ridiculous

Do people not have plastic basins inside their kitchen sinks? Our actual sink never gets used other than for putting water down the drain. We don’t have a baby though, and our cat would not enjoy a bath anywhere.

Kool4katz · 22/08/2018 20:40

OP, you're not really serious are you?
If someone took a shit in my kitchen sink, it wouldn't faze me that much, as you can just clean it.
Christ OP, you should try living on a farm for a bit. It might cure your mysophobia.

cholka · 22/08/2018 20:41

You sound fun

pictish · 22/08/2018 20:41

I know Original - in all honesty I find a lot of those threads similarly infuriating. I think people embarrass themselves whining about such rubbish. I usually want to comment along the lines of what I have said on this thread.
Why this one? I don’t know...clearly my tolerance for the asinine and spoiled is less today. I’m not sure why.

Beamur · 22/08/2018 20:42

Anything that needs cleaning goes in my sink.
No utility.
Everyone still alive.

toomanychilder · 22/08/2018 20:43

If your kitchen sink is a food prep area, you're cooking wrong!

FanWithoutAGuard · 22/08/2018 20:44

Getting rid of manky flower water is OK, but brushing your teeth isn't?

But anything on a food plate - the forks, the glasses, they've all had saliva on - so I can't see the difference.

and yes, I'd empty a mop bucket somewhere else if possible, but mainly so I don't have to lift it into the kitchen sink.

And hair and clothes are probably cleaner than the cloth after I've cleaned the table and surfaces, so I don't really see the issue with those.

As to bathing babies/pets, well, again, if I'm going to use that sink to wash my hands after doing whatever I've been doing, then I can't say that a baby is going to be significantly worse, and I don't have pets, so I don't know how often they need washing or how dirty they are - I would think they'd shake themselves though, and that concerns me more than the cleanable sink if I'm honest.

RaininSummer · 22/08/2018 20:49

I use the kitchen sink for anything which needs doing. Really don't understand this thinking.

CrochetBelle · 22/08/2018 20:49

- washing babies (at some level you are washing off poo and wee)

Haven't personally, but would do if needed. It'd save my back doing it in the bath.

- washing pets (same as above)

My dog is far too big for the sink, but I do use the kitchen sink to clean out the cat litter tray, and hamster cage.

- brushing teeth (spitting in a food prep area)

I am expecting a plumber tomorrow, when they kids are getting ready for school. He'll be in the bathroom, so the kids' toothbrushes will be in the kitchen instead.

- emptying mop buckets (pour it down the toilet)

Don't use a mop bucket, but used the sink when I did.

- washing/dying/cutting hair in the kitchen- hair in food prep area

I cut my DC hair in the living room as it's easier to vacuum up. I did dye her hair in the kitchen a couple of weeks ago, as it'd be much easier cleaned from lino than carpet!

- washing clothes and shoes in a food prep area.

Nah, I use the mangle outside Confused

You do realise that the vast majority of people don't have a utility room? Some people even only have one bathroom, which isn't always accessible for certain tasks.

TheBrilloPad · 22/08/2018 20:50

My 4yr old is gutted she's too big for "sink baths" now. Bathing babies in the sink is the BEST. Perfect size up until 18months ish, uses less water than a bath and no bending down.

LeighaJ · 22/08/2018 20:51

I brush my teeth over the kitchen sink if I have stuff soaking in the bathroom sink.

How is my saliva any worse then the raw chicken goo we clean off our cutting boards? 🤔

How about I do whatever the fuck I want with my kitchen sink and you do whatever the fuck you want or don't want to do with yours. Grin

CripsSandwiches · 22/08/2018 20:52

I don't empty the mop into the sink or to be fair do any of the others (although I'd happily brush my teeth in the kitchen sink if it was convenient which it isn't). That said I don't think it's at all unhygienic. I never prep food in the sink and I always wash my kitchen sink anyway. There are going to be far worse germs on your hands from whatever you've touched during the day and hands actually come into contact with food.

5000KallaxHoles · 22/08/2018 20:53

With how badly my kitchen sink shows watermarks... using my kitchen sink for ANYTHING after I've cleaned it is bloody revolting and should be a criminal offence.

Pud2 · 22/08/2018 21:06

I find it a bit depressing reading this thread. As others have said, privilege seems to result in people losing touch with reality. Of course it’s fine to do these things in your sink as long as you give it a clean. Many, many people have so many more things to worry about in their less than privileged lives. Get a grip on reality folks.

BertieBott · 22/08/2018 21:07

Yes, I know saliva is also on spoons, but the act of spitting in a place you prepare food is horrid.

You don’t prepare food directly on the sink, but rinsing off carrots where 2 minutes ago your muddy trainers were seems wrong.

The hair issue is not hair being dirty but that it gets everywhere.

I don’t have a utility room. I use the bathroom sink.

I’ve been to a place where sanitation is difficult and even there they would fetch water and one bowl is specifically for washing plates any that one would never be for babies of cleaning.

NorksAreMessy · 22/08/2018 21:07

This is such a weird thread. I assume anything basically attached to a source of hot running water can be adequately cleaned, so, no problem with any of this, although brushing teeth in the kitchen sink just seems odd.

I have put a Yorkshire Terrier in the sink for a warm rinse when her fur was covered in snow lumps. She was not impressed.

I use bleach spray every day and drink yakult...not dead yet :)

BertieBott · 22/08/2018 21:08

For babies or cleaning etc.
