Having a chat about old shops with DH and he mentioned kwiksave, and I said oh yeah the fridge flaps! And this is the look he gave me Hmm the fridge flaps did exist didn't they? He says they definitely didn't and I'm making it up

They like separated the non fridge stuff from the fridge and you had to walk through them??

Aibu to say that's he's completely wrong and needs to get his facts right!

Fridge flaps and trolley flaps! I'd completely forgotten about those.

Our Kwiksave is now an Iceland. We also had a Gateway which became a Somerfield and is now Morrisons.

Anyone remember shopping at VG? Does it exist now? I also recall shopping at Presto (think they’ve all become Safeway now)

Momo27 · 22/08/2018 15:03

And getting Green Shield stamps with your shopping which you’d then stick in booklets til you’d saved up for something? This is going back a while to when I was young. Used to be a treat to lick the stamps and stick them in!

I remember cutting out the crown from the packaging of crown butter with my mum to collect for something, I can't remember what now, I was only little.

And tokens off the Robinson's jam jars.

And I remember cutting out the monster shapes off the back off monster munch packs but that was just to play with, and I think they still put them on there.

Another Kwik Save cashier here, they actually paid good wages in the early eighties (due to having to learn all the prices). I went from earning £60 a week in a chemist shop to picking up over £100 a week , mega money !

longwayoff · 22/08/2018 18:20

Crikey kizzy. If I'd known that I'd have chucked the typewriter out of the office window and galloped off to kwiksave. Untold wealth!

OutPinked · 22/08/2018 18:25

Ha yes, I remember the ones... As a child they were quite brutal to walk through.

GabsAlot · 22/08/2018 19:31

out tsco doesnt have lids on freezers

i think the fridge flaps are rare of of hygiene

Pinkyponkcustard · 22/08/2018 20:12

What were trolley flaps for?

MollyMallyMindy · 22/08/2018 20:43

We had a VG, corner-shop sized, which sold eggs in plastic cartons that always broke and cut you. It got turned into a Spar in the late 80s.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 22/08/2018 20:57

I remember these (another child of the 80s) I also remember one shop, think it was Kwik Save but not sure that had a completely separate alcohol department aisle. It had push gates to go in and out - not sure if you paid separately or not.

Grin DH has conceded I'm right!! New I hadn't made up the fridge flaps!!
