Having a chat about old shops with DH and he mentioned kwiksave, and I said oh yeah the fridge flaps! And this is the look he gave me Hmm the fridge flaps did exist didn't they? He says they definitely didn't and I'm making it up

They like separated the non fridge stuff from the fridge and you had to walk through them??

Aibu to say that's he's completely wrong and needs to get his facts right!

RJnomore1 · 21/08/2018 23:21

JackReacherReader · 21/08/2018 23:22

Some cash and carry type places still have them.

Thehop · 21/08/2018 23:27

I remember fridge flaps!

CandyStore · 21/08/2018 23:29

I remember them too.

Crunched · 21/08/2018 23:30

Yep - still used in Makro

Fruitbatdancer · 21/08/2018 23:30

Our local Booker still has them! As does our local farm shop!

TheChippendenSpook · 21/08/2018 23:32

Yeah I used to love walking through them when I was little! It was the highlight of my Kwik Save trip Grin

MollyMallyMindy · 21/08/2018 23:33

I don't recall them at the two small Kwiksaves I used, but they have them at local Oriental supermarket.

SandyY2K · 21/08/2018 23:34

I don't recall them in our local Kwiksave.

daughterofanarchy · 21/08/2018 23:35

Oh yep these were definitely a thing. Booker still has them as do a few Indian shops in my area.

MyYoniFromHull · 21/08/2018 23:36

Definite yes. In ours you had to pay separately at the butchers section. And they made you write your name and address on the back of the cheque when you paid, when nowhere else did

Parisbun · 21/08/2018 23:36

Oh yes they did exist. Very stange and non too clean as I recall but yes you had to walk through the fridge area.
More impressive was the way the checkout assistants knew the price of every single item in the shop and keyed them in individually. This was obviously before the age of bar codes but other shops had sticky labels which Kwik Save seemed to do without.

TokyoSushi · 21/08/2018 23:40

I agree, when you were about 5 Kwiksave was a brilliant experience! The fridge flaps, the butchers, the speed of keying in by the people on the check outs - and then you could take everything home in a massive crisp box - amazing!!

Willow2017 · 21/08/2018 23:55

We have them inside our walk in freezer at work. No idea why as it has a big heavy door !
But i remember them from kwik save too.

Passingwords · 21/08/2018 23:57

Ha yes, no idea that's what they are called, Fridge flaps are making me laugh - would be a great idea to have some nailed up to entertain the dcs

ColinsVeryJolly · 21/08/2018 23:58

And the weird flap entrance where you pushed your trolley through the flaps but had to go through a revolving thing yourself.

PestymcPestFace · 22/08/2018 00:00

Fridge flaps were pretty uncommon down south.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 22/08/2018 00:03

I lived in greater Manchester and I remember them at kwiksave in the early 80’s. Also remember kwiksave didn’t put price tickets on their stuff and the cashiers had to remember all the prices. (Shows how little variety there was in those days too)

rainbowsandsmiles · 22/08/2018 00:03

Had completely forgotten about those! Yes,they were a thing though! Grin

abbsisspartacus · 22/08/2018 00:03

Golly Collins I had forgotten about the weird trolley thing

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 22/08/2018 00:04

I don’t think we had kwiksave here so I don’t remember any fridge flaps but i do remember the little flappy thing you had to push your trolley under in our local wellworths when I was wee. Trolley under the flaps and people through the turnstile type thing. I never understood the point. Except the flaps were fun to run under Grin

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 22/08/2018 00:04

Ha! Collins beat me to it! Grin

JackReacherReader · 22/08/2018 00:11

Grin yes! The weird trolley flap!
