Having a chat about old shops with DH and he mentioned kwiksave, and I said oh yeah the fridge flaps! And this is the look he gave me Hmm the fridge flaps did exist didn't they? He says they definitely didn't and I'm making it up

They like separated the non fridge stuff from the fridge and you had to walk through them??

Aibu to say that's he's completely wrong and needs to get his facts right!

Yup in makro and the turnstiles into somerfield.

Ah that takes me right back

PositiveVibez · 22/08/2018 11:28

Yes. I definitely remember the fridge flaps and human walk through.

Also our Kwik save had a butchers that sold tubs of voluminous red sauce for marinading meat. It looked almost radioactive.

longwayoff · 22/08/2018 11:50

Never seen these. Southerner. BUT in the 90s most small corner shops with a chilled section hung a smaller version over the chiller so you had to fl ap your way in for a pint of milk. They have all vanished now. Q1. Why were they there? Q2.Wny have they been removed?

Aprilshowersinaugust · 22/08/2018 11:52

Yabu to say the word flaps on mn.

Eliza9917 · 22/08/2018 11:56

We had a kwik save and I vaguely remember these things. We also had a beejams there before it was kwik save!!

bluemoonchances · 22/08/2018 12:12

Yes I remember fridge flaps!

Quick save home brand was No Frills, printed in black on a white background... my mum use to tell me that we shopped at Kwiksave because the black and white labels matched our black and white kitchen GrinGrin nothing to do with us having no money!!

Antigon · 22/08/2018 12:15

Think they still have them in the supermarkets in hot countries, I guess because they have to air condition the whole supermarket and ensure the fridgey stuff is extra cool?

MalloryLaurel · 22/08/2018 12:19

Costco still has fridge flaps in the dairy section.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/08/2018 12:28

No Frills Fridge Flaps.

Try saying that three times!

Toddlerteaplease · 22/08/2018 12:46

Oh god yes, the trolly flap/ turnstile thing. We had it in Sainsbury's

ColinsVeryJolly · 22/08/2018 13:00

In our Tesco back in the 80s to go through the checkout you’d have to wheel your trolley up to a shelf that was positioned over it, unload your shopping on to the shelf, then the checkout person would put it in to an empty trolley just behind it. It made sense like that, wonder why they stopped doing it?

vampirethriller · 22/08/2018 13:09

Our Kwik save had fridge flaps. Always a bit grubby. I seem to remember freezers that didn't have lids too, I used to lean over to smell the ice!

MadisonAvenue · 22/08/2018 13:09

I'd forgotten all about those!

I also remember when Aldi first opened locally, it would've been the early 90s as we'd just bought our first home together so had to make savings, and the cashiers there had to remember all of the prices.

vampirethriller · 22/08/2018 13:10

And I got my head stuck in the Safeway turnstile so many times my mother stopped going in out of embarrassment.

Bluelonerose · 22/08/2018 13:10

Yes I remember the fridge flaps. My uncle used to flip the trolley round so ide go through first Grin

woolythoughts · 22/08/2018 13:22

Rubs shiny badge

I was one of those check out operators that had to remember all the prices!

We got tested weekly!

Cupoteap · 22/08/2018 13:28

Yes but not in every store. Luckily I worked there after bar codes came in!

Pinkyponkcustard · 22/08/2018 13:40

For a second I thought the shop was called fridge flaps!

longwayoff · 22/08/2018 13:42

Crikey wooly, well done to you and your colleagues

Antigon · 22/08/2018 13:43

Where is the poster Flisspaps? She must have a view on this.

Costco has fridge flaps too.

Babybearsporij · 22/08/2018 13:46

I used to work in Kwiksave, I think they must have phased out fridge flaps by then, although my store wasn't very big.

I do however remember packing the trolley for the customers once I'd scanned the shopping I was such a perfectionist and the arguments over penny or 3p bags. So many customers tried to pack their shopping into freezer bags, haha.

Met some of my best friends there.

Aprilshowersinaugust · 22/08/2018 13:49

This is an ideal opportunity for a confession.
Many years ago after a shop at the afore mentioned store, I loaded the baby into the car and asked older ds to load the shopping from the pull along red cart into the boot.
Got home and he had only lifted the whole cart into the boot containing the bags of shopping!!
Too ashamed to go back.
It now houses my ironing pile!!
Grin

spikeyiscool · 22/08/2018 14:02

I remember kwiksave, in our area it became a somerfield then a co-op. It still has some of the same staff!

our one was incredibly grubby and was always full of long queues. I don't remember the fridge flaps though.

Momo27 · 22/08/2018 14:06

Oh this is bringing back memories! The years before conveyor belts when you just had to unload your shopping and shove it towards the cashier. They’d then load it into the empty trolley of the previous customer. I remember being amazed first time I saw a conveyor belt in supermarket, it was like science fiction.

itbemay · 22/08/2018 14:14

@colinsveryjolly yes!! oh those were the days!!
