Having a chat about old shops with DH and he mentioned kwiksave, and I said oh yeah the fridge flaps! And this is the look he gave me Hmm the fridge flaps did exist didn't they? He says they definitely didn't and I'm making it up

They like separated the non fridge stuff from the fridge and you had to walk through them??

Aibu to say that's he's completely wrong and needs to get his facts right!

Brings back memories, I worked in several kwik save stores and yes the fridge flaps were real. They were installed all bright and clear until some 'bright' spark decided to instruct all supervisors to arrange they got cleaned with Jif (now called Cif) and from that day onwards they became greyish and opaque!

GlacierMints · 22/08/2018 00:22

I can't even begin to imagine these things and especially with a separate trolley area and turnstile. Can anyone link to a picture please? Mind is barely coping with trying to imagine this weirdity.

Loonoon · 22/08/2018 00:23

I live in South London and our local oriental supermarket has them.

GabsAlot · 22/08/2018 00:25

yep remember flaps

Seren85 · 22/08/2018 00:28

Yes I remember these and also Kwik Save and Aldi before barcodes and without stickers on items. What memories the checkout assistants must have had!

GabsAlot · 22/08/2018 00:30

what was that trolley flap about anyway

austenozzy · 22/08/2018 00:34

I recently came across this in a Bonus supermarket in Reykjavik this year, but I do remember them in cash n carries years ago.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 22/08/2018 00:35

The strips were a smaller (and grubbier) version of this, into and out of the chilled section

This did exist right?
IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 22/08/2018 00:36

This is like the turnstile and flap thing

This did exist right?
CrispbuttyNo1 · 22/08/2018 00:37

I think the trolley one was to stop people taking full trolleys back outside as the flaps were only one way.

bitheby · 22/08/2018 00:43

Read and re-read the OP and just couldn't work out what was flapping.

Pictures have helped slightly. Child of the 70s here. I don't remember fridge flaps but I do remember a trip to Beejams where everything was in freezers.

AjasLipstick · 22/08/2018 00:55

I remember them and now I live in Australia it's been like going back in time! The shops here are often distinctly 1970s in their presentation and packaging.

I bloody love it I do.

daphine2004 · 22/08/2018 00:57

I used to love running through them as a kid! Lol. I also wanted to work there as liked supermarket sweep too, doubt the job would have been anything like that though 🤣

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 22/08/2018 01:03

I also wanted to work there as liked supermarket sweep too,

Grin

Do you think the staff ever do that after closing?

I used to work in a homewares store with little fake beds and one real double. One time a manager and staff member were caught “testing out the bed” after closing!

daphine2004 · 22/08/2018 01:17

@IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan I hope so. Actually, if a supermarket just opened up once in a while for a supermarket sweep night with the fake turkeys etc. I’d have a go!

Trying out the beds?! Yikes. I worked in a well known specialist baby shop as a student. All we got were parents to be (normally dads), putting the teddy bears in positions from the karma sutra 😂

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 22/08/2018 01:21

😂😂😂

RoboJesus · 22/08/2018 01:23

The farm shop has them

Atchiclees · 22/08/2018 01:38

I remember fridge flaps! Supermarkets need to have more crystal maze type set ups where we can have little adventures whilst shopping. Bring back fridge flaps!

delphguelph · 22/08/2018 01:43

Why did they ever have those turn stiles? So people couldn't nick trolleys?

DerekTheBrave · 22/08/2018 01:46

Ah the fridge flaps!

I used to look forward to going through them all the way around!

DerekTheBrave · 22/08/2018 01:47

Just thought I should point out that that was when i was a child shopping with my mum!

ALongHardWinter · 22/08/2018 02:09

I remember Kwiksave but I don't remember fridge flaps! Grin

scaryteacher · 22/08/2018 07:47

Still fridge flaps here in Belgium, and the trolley turnstile thing as well in some places.

MollyMallyMindy · 22/08/2018 10:51

They had turnstiles and trolley flaps in our Safeway.

WeirdCatLady · 22/08/2018 10:58

Yay bitheby, I remember going into Bejams when my parents first bought a microwave, we were dead snazzy. Bought all sorts of horrendous tasting microwave meals just because we could!
