To not pay via contactless?

I was in my local Tesco today, just quickly grabbing a few things.

I got to the till and was told "It is contactless you know". I said I was aware, but I'd rather pay via the usual chip and pin if that was okay. The checkout lady looked a bit confused.

Later this afternoon I visited Boots. The woman who served me said would I mind using contactless, because it'll be quicker and hurry things along. I said no thank you, I'll stick with pin entering if that's alright. She was very Confused and just repeated "contactless is faster for us"

AIBU not to pay via contactless?

Why would you not?

MsOliphant · 21/08/2018 22:21

But why?

biscuitaddict · 21/08/2018 22:21

Yeah YABU.

Katescurios · 21/08/2018 22:22

Its about 10 seconds faster to use contactless. I prefer contactless myself but i dont see why anyone should have a problem with you using chip and pin

cadburyegg · 21/08/2018 22:22

YANBU. Staff are supposed to ask before assuming someone wants to use contactless.

DonaldLovesDoritos · 21/08/2018 22:22

Because it doesn't show up straight away on my available balance (via online banking), and little transactions of £30 or under all add up without even showing in pending transactions

I told my bank that I wasn't happy with contactless so they sent me a new non-contactless card.

whatswrongnow · 21/08/2018 22:23

I've a chip and pin card. I'm sick of people telling me to tap it. I then have to explain it does not tapConfused apart from anything else my card is a debit card. I've heard it can take time for tap card to clear your account. Had a girl in Macdonald ask was I sure it did not tap

thousandpapercranes · 21/08/2018 22:23

Did you faff at the till for 5 minutes looking for your card then went onto refuse to use contactless. In that situation then yes YWBU.

If there wasn’t a que behind you and then YWNBU.

makingmiracles · 21/08/2018 22:24

Yanbu, contactless payments often don’t show as pending transactions on online banking and often don’t leave you’re account for several days, making them harder to keep track of.
I dislike contactless and I can’t afford to lose £90 is my card was lost or stolen so both me and requested non contactless cards from the bank(llyods)

SerendipityFelix · 21/08/2018 22:24

Why would you not? One thing if your card doesn’t have the capability, but why would you not? What have you against contactless?

Sparklesocks · 21/08/2018 22:24

I think it’s pretty common now so most cashiers will point it out

GunpowderGelatine · 21/08/2018 22:25

I have to admit OP I'm not 100% won over on contactless. I especially hate it when you put your card out (to show you're paying by card) and the person takes it and does the contactless bit for you so you don't even see the amount Hmm also my friend ended up paying for someone else's drinks in a busy bar after tapping it too early. It just feels like I'm throwing caution to the wind every time Grin

Mumof4under10 · 21/08/2018 22:25

Yanbu. I've chosen not to have contactless and many people I know don't use it.

GunpowderGelatine · 21/08/2018 22:26

Because it doesn't show up straight away on my available balance (via online banking), and little transactions of £30 or under all add up without even showing in pending transactions

Oh yes this really bugs me. I forget what I've spent and then one day it all comes whooshing out!

Sorry10 · 21/08/2018 22:26

I don’t have a contactless card mu purse got stolen last year and even after card was cancelled it was used 3 times then 3 times the next day .apparentlh can still be used after cancelled was the answer I got from bank . I got the money back but it pissed me right off that some cheeky little sod was buying cigarettes and alcohol with my money . So I asked my bank for a non contactless card and it’s a bit hard luck if it takes longer .

KidLorneRoll · 21/08/2018 22:27

It takes the same time for contactless as it does chip and pin to clear, they both go through the same system. If you have the card already, there is no reason not to make use of it.

I can (sort of) understand why people don't like them for security reasons, but if you have the card then just use contactless.

I didn't know that about contactless but now I do I don't think I will use it anymore. I have had a few confusing balances before and this explains it.

bookmum08 · 21/08/2018 22:28

I don't use it. It's not compulsary. Retail staff may feel they have to hurry customers along because there is a long queue or whatever (ex retail worker here) but really you are the customer at that moment in time and they should focus on you and how you are paying. Not worrying about the next customer. The next customer needs to wait their turn.

DonaldLovesDoritos · 21/08/2018 22:29

You’re fucking strange

Really? Is that necessary? Confused I'm strange for wanting to keep track of my transactions....

Simply not true. Even the Halifax website is very clear about this, and it states contactless payments often won't show up until then come out, making you falsely believe there's more cash in there at a glance than there really isn

SneakyGremlins · 21/08/2018 22:29

I can't be trusted with contactless so I use chip and pin!

Teenagerwoes · 21/08/2018 22:29

I’m with you, it can take days (even weeks) to come out of your bank with contactless, shows as pending with chip and pin.

BIWI · 21/08/2018 22:31

I have never been told by a cashier how I should pay. And I'd take a very dim view of anyone making such a suggestion. It's entirely up to me if I am going to pay by card, contactless or cash.
