To not pay via contactless?

I was in my local Tesco today, just quickly grabbing a few things.

I got to the till and was told "It is contactless you know". I said I was aware, but I'd rather pay via the usual chip and pin if that was okay. The checkout lady looked a bit confused.

Later this afternoon I visited Boots. The woman who served me said would I mind using contactless, because it'll be quicker and hurry things along. I said no thank you, I'll stick with pin entering if that's alright. She was very Confused and just repeated "contactless is faster for us"

AIBU not to pay via contactless?

apart from anything else my card is a debit card.

What's that got to do with it?

Try Apple/android pay OP - you can see your pending transactions on your phone then Wink

DonaldLovesDoritos · 21/08/2018 22:32

The only time I think it's acceptable to suggest a way that I pay is a tiny little shop I visited a year or so ago.

They were closing down and very politely requested I pay via cash as they get charged quite a bit for the card payments. I was more than happy to

I'm not allowed a contactless card because I am dangerous weeps

borntobequiet · 21/08/2018 22:36

I need to use my PIN otherwise I will forget it.

jjemimapuddleduck · 21/08/2018 22:37

I'd be pretty cross if this happened to me. I don't like contactless as I check my balance multiple times daily, so always pay by chip & pin.

bluemoonchances · 21/08/2018 22:37

I find it convenient, but it really annoys me when the cashier tries to take the card from you to tap it themselves without showing you the amount. On the several occasions this has happened (always in bars for some reason) I refuse to hand it over and explain that they are supposed to show the customer the amount and let the customer tap, it's for their protection as much as the customer.

PUGaLUGS · 21/08/2018 22:38

I cannot see the issue? You spend the money either way.

Just keep your receipts? Have a look at your online banking and cross check against what’s pending/come out. Surely if your balance is x and you have spent y it’s easy to track?

OutPinked · 21/08/2018 22:38

It takes a fair bit longer on the machine to do chip and pin so I imagine a cashier with a queue to deal with probably finds it frustrating.

StrawberrySquash · 21/08/2018 22:43

I have contactless and use it because it's easy. But I don't like it. I thought you were supposed to get asked for a PIN every so often, but I never do, a thief could spend loads. And you can't always see the amount and you often don't get receipts. It's just all becoming harder to keep track of your money.

ourkidmolly · 21/08/2018 22:45

@jjemina

Why are checking the balance several times a day? That’s a bit excessive no? What are you checking for?

Dillydallyingthrough · 21/08/2018 22:45

I always request chip and pin cards rather than contactless- I know too many people who have had contactless cards stolen and used...

canthavethenameiwant · 21/08/2018 22:46

It's a cheaper transaction contactless than chip and pin for the business I think? Or so I was told by my boss

butterflysugarbaby · 21/08/2018 22:47

YABU. Why not use contactless?

I definitely don't see the payments as taking longer to show? Why would they?

BraveAndStunning · 21/08/2018 22:48

Didn't know it took longer to show in account. Interesting. I am uncomfortable with contactless and this has persuaded me to ask for standard chip and pin.

londonrach · 21/08/2018 22:48

Yanbu. I have a personal hate for this and refuse to use it as does dh and alot of my friends. There are a few friends who do use it. My stupid bank wont remove it from my card either. Then this same stupid bank decided to not send statements to me anymore as its online now. I dont have an online account. Took 1 year to sort. Hate how the bank world is going.

rosy71 · 21/08/2018 22:50

I prefer not to use it because the transactions don't show up as pending like they do if you use your pin. I have been caught out a couple of times when I've made several contactless payments and they haven't shown up until a few days later.

AnoukSpirit · 21/08/2018 22:50

It takes a fair bit longer on the machine to do chip and pin so I imagine a cashier with a queue to deal with probably finds it frustrating.

No longer than counting in cash and counting out change.

The queue is not the customer's responsibility. Should I also put half my shopping back so I go through faster and don't inconvenience the rest of the queue? Hmm

If people don't want to use contactless they don't have to. No puppies will die because I use chip and pin instead of contactless.

AlpacaLypse · 21/08/2018 22:50

I've been using contactless on all four of my cards since October 2016 when I finally decided to get a grip on it. Still never been asked to confirm my identity by PIN, and I thought it was meant to be about one in ten times? My cards live in a purse, and the purse lives in a cross body bag with a lot of zips, so being pickpocketed or scanned from the outside is going to be pretty well impossible.

butterflysugarbaby · 21/08/2018 22:50

And yeah you DO have to enter your PIN, every £70 or so. So after 3 contactless payments of £20, £20, and £30, or 7 payments of a tenner each etc. So if someone got hold of your card, they could not take more than £70 IYSWIM.

Then I am sure if you reported it to the police, they could look at cctv and see what cheeky fecker was using your card, and you would get the money back.

buttermilkwaffles · 21/08/2018 22:51

Get a Starling or Monzo bank account and any payments (contactless or not) will show up instantly in your account - your phone will ping about 1 or 2 seconds after you make the payment. The app also categorises your spending each month by category.

Clairetree1 · 21/08/2018 22:51

I don't have a contactless card.

you may not be aware the if a contactless card is stolen, it is impossible to cancel.

You can get an agreement that it isn't your loss, but still a year, or 2 or 3 or 5 years down the line, it is still out there, still being used, and still has your name on it

butterflysugarbaby · 21/08/2018 22:51

I have had contactless for 5 years BTW and have NEVER had my money 'taken' for someone else's transaction! That is a myth people!

ilovegin112 · 21/08/2018 22:51

My Lloyd’s app shows the contactless under the pending transactions and it’s out off my balance straight away

daintydaisies · 21/08/2018 22:52

I always give people a choice to use contactless or not, but I'd never be rude because they didn't want to use it.

Sometimes I prefer to use chip and pin because like you mentioned, it doesn't show up in your bank straight away all the time.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/08/2018 22:55

Of course it's rude of them to pester you to pay a certain way.

But, I think it's strange to be so concerned about contactless payments taking longer to show up, when chip and pin payments can be delayed too - that sounds to me as if you know you're bad with finances but want to blame the technology. If you're really bothered then just keep tabs on it!

And if you were asked about paying more quickly twice in one day, it sounds likely the problem is that you're being rudely slow, rather than anything else. Do you get your card out before you're served? Or do you wait to be told the total then start looking for it? Could be the cashiers were both just fed up waiting for you.
