To not pay via contactless?

DonaldLovesDoritos · 21/08/2018 22:18

I was in my local Tesco today, just quickly grabbing a few things.

I got to the till and was told "It is contactless you know". I said I was aware, but I'd rather pay via the usual chip and pin if that was okay. The checkout lady looked a bit confused.

Later this afternoon I visited Boots. The woman who served me said would I mind using contactless, because it'll be quicker and hurry things along. I said no thank you, I'll stick with pin entering if that's alright. She was very Confused and just repeated "contactless is faster for us"

AIBU not to pay via contactless?

Claire I think she was being sarcastic

DarklyDreamingDexter · 21/08/2018 23:27

I refuse to routinely refuse contactless too, so call me a Luddite if you will. It takes a couple of seconds to enter a PIN number, which is a safety precaution against improper use. The banks are selling us the concept that it's oh so easy to use, but why is a less secure method of payment supposed to be progress?

Clairetree1 · 21/08/2018 23:27

people are confusing the different aspects of a card. You can cancel a card, meaning the card number cannot be used, and the chip and pin cannot be used, but currently the contactless facility cannot be permanently cancelled,

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/08/2018 23:28

But how are you guessing?

Do you mean, you forget what you've spent money on, day to day? If so, I do think you're bad with money. Nothing shameful about it - but your problems aren't really anything to do with whether you use contactless or not, as you'll have this issue if you use a card at all.

Or do you mean, you gamble on the hope you'll pay for something and it won't be taken out for a while? If it's that, then you're bad with money in a much more serious way, because you're effectively living on unofficial credit all the time.

I loved the convenience of contactless until I realised about the outgoing money from tapping doesn't show on your pending transactions right away. I've had a few occasions where I've been inconvenienced by it so don't tap anymore for that reason

YANBU

BackforGood · 21/08/2018 23:32

YANBU, OP.
I prefer what I perceive to be the security of having to put my PIN in.
Nobody should be made to feel they are being unreasonable to do that, when we are all constantly being reminded to take car, and not do anything we feel uncomfortable with, in regards our money.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 21/08/2018 23:33

Contactless non cancellation applies to offline transactions - vast majority of contactless is online, plus the banks have fraud detection processes that are invoked after the card is reported as missing.

Getting back to the OP, strange that you were asked to use contactless, I never have and I occasionally like to use chip and pin as I'm worried I'll forget the pin! YANBU to use chip and pin, it's a facility on your card after all. Bugger it, next time insist on writing out a cheque!

TotHappy · 21/08/2018 23:33

It really isn't the same as chip & pin; it really isn't. Maybe it's down to the banks methods, not the technology, but my bank explicitly states that contactless will not appear in pending transactions, whereas chip & pin always does, by the end of the day.

I also take issue with the idea that it's rude bot to have your card ready when it's time to pay. They tell you the amount, you find the amount, you give them the amount. You do not have to move at speed. It's a human interaction, a courteous interaction, which involves each party treating the other as a human being. The cashier should o more be expecting you to hurry up, or hinting at you to hurry up, than you should them while they're scanning things through.

I hate the idea that it's all just a matter of convenience, and efficiency. All these minute events are your actual life, not just a means to an end.

GunpowderGelatine · 21/08/2018 23:34

Claire with respect, you are wrong. Some offline transactions can happen with contactless after the card has been cancelled, but they're rare. It's certainly not impossible to cancel a contactless

Do you mean, you forget what you've spent money on, day to day?

No, I don't mean that at all.

What I mean is, if I use contactless 4 times in varying amounts - say £10, £12.50, £27 And £4.50 - unless you check your balance after every single transaction, you don't know if it's immediately come off your available balance, or if it's going to take a few days (as occasionally contactless amounts do come of straight away). That's what I mean about guessing - and even if you're great with money and budgeting, it's hard to keep track off when it's random like that.

Clairetree1 · 21/08/2018 23:35

does it matter what sort of transaction it is? A contactless card can be used years after the card has been cancelled. If you have lost one, you need to check all your statements every week carefully. Because you can still be defrauded years later. And no, its not actually that rare

LiquidCosh · 21/08/2018 23:35

YANBU OP I always use chip and pin now as the amount comes off my balance immediately, with contactless it can take days and the money still shows as available. I am not organised enough to check this daily and not rich enough for it not to matter Grin

GunpowderGelatine · 21/08/2018 23:36

I agree with TotHappy - I hate being rushed about, I wish everyone would be a bit more patient and enjoy even the smallest interactions with another human

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 21/08/2018 23:36

I love contactless I wish they would up the transaction limit.

MrsMozart · 21/08/2018 23:38

It's your money and transaction so pay how you want.

Svalberg · 21/08/2018 23:38

"butterflysugarbaby

I have had contactless for 5 years BTW and have NEVER had my money 'taken' for someone else's transaction! That is a myth people!"

Not so. I paid cash for a coffee, and got a receipt. When I came to check my bank account, I'd had a transaction at that retailer at about the same time as on the cash receipt for a couple of quid more. The only explanation was that the money was taken from the card in my purse as I got too close to the payment machine when I paid.

The other thing is, I generally need a receipt for small amounts & you don't, in my experience, tend to get one with contactless.

theunsure · 21/08/2018 23:39

I have contactless on all my credit and debit cards and all show as pending in the apps as fast as PIN transactions? I have Nationwide, Santander, Barclaycard and MBNA.
I love contactless, wish they’d up the limit to £50.
I can’t wait for the day that you don’t need to carry anything at all and it just scans your retina or similar. Marvellous.
Only Luddites refuse to use contactless. YABU!

CrispbuttyNo1 · 21/08/2018 23:40

I’m with metro bank and contactless payments come off my available balance immediately. Hasn’t always been that way.

keyboardkate · 21/08/2018 23:44

My contactless charges appear same day on my internet banking.

I check this every day regardless. Just a habit, takes two minutes.

I have absolutely no problem with contactless. Great if you need something small and have no cash on you etc.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/08/2018 23:54

gun - fair enough, but I'd just say that's being bad with money.

I'm not brilliant, and I make mistakes, but it would never occur to me to blame the technology. I didn't realise people did until I met my DP. She will easily go through a month knowing how much is in her account, and how much she's spending, and somehow never putting the two together. So she can genuinely be surprised by her bank balance, even when she's trying to be careful with money.

But isn't it obvious that if you're not well off enough not to care, you just need to keep track? Round things up to the nearest whole pound, even? It doesn't matter when money comes out of your account - if you've spent it, it's gone! It's not as if it's going to reappear some time, so surely you can figure out that if there's far more money than there should be, you can't spend it twice?

helacells · 21/08/2018 23:58

Sounds dodgy, glad we don't have it here in the US

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/08/2018 23:59

Yes, it's contactless cards that would truly ruin America these days. Sad

LemonysSnicket · 22/08/2018 00:02

@SneakyGremlins I mean where you swipe your card and have to sign, I don't know the term as chip and pin was already in place when I got my first card

bestofme21 · 22/08/2018 00:02

Why even get into a conversation with the cashier? If they say "it's contactless" just say "thanks" and then carry on and put your card into the reader slot. Then you have to enter your PIN.

SimonBridges · 22/08/2018 00:04

does it matter what sort of transaction it is? A contactless card can be used years after the card has been cancelled.

Yes it matters. The only way the contactless still works after the card is cancelled is if it is used for small amounts that’s don’t phone to the bank, offline transactions.

I recommend using Apple Pay. There is no upper limit.
