To not pay via contactless?

DonaldLovesDoritos · 21/08/2018 22:18

I was in my local Tesco today, just quickly grabbing a few things.

I got to the till and was told "It is contactless you know". I said I was aware, but I'd rather pay via the usual chip and pin if that was okay. The checkout lady looked a bit confused.

Later this afternoon I visited Boots. The woman who served me said would I mind using contactless, because it'll be quicker and hurry things along. I said no thank you, I'll stick with pin entering if that's alright. She was very Confused and just repeated "contactless is faster for us"

AIBU not to pay via contactless?

you may not be aware the if a contactless card is stolen, it is impossible to cancel.

I'm so unaware, I cancelled my contactless card when it was stolen. Silly me. On the plus side, it did mean the card was blocked within minutes and couldn't be used again, so on the whole, I'm glad I listened to common sense and my bank rather than what you're saying.

I had a card stolen and used back in the days of signatures.

No one should tell you what to do but I can’t see the logic of using chip and pin when contactless is there.

Eistigi · 21/08/2018 22:59

YANBU I also ask to pin my purchases, even when contactless is an option. I hate when debits don't come out straight away.

DonaldLovesDoritos · 21/08/2018 23:00

But, I think it's strange to be so concerned about 🤥contactless payments taking longer to show up, when chip and pin payments can be delayed too - that sounds to me as if you know you're bad with finances but want to blame the technology. If you're really bothered then just keep tabs on it!

And if you were asked about paying more quickly twice in one day, it sounds likely the problem is that you're being rudely slow, rather than anything else. Do you get your card out before you're served? Or do you wait to be told the total then start looking for it? Could be the cashiers were both just fed up waiting for you.

Why is it strange to be concerned that my finances aren't showing up as they should and as efficiently time wise? I'm not bad with finances at all. I just don't have money to discard of without a section's thought. I am keeping tabs on it, by using chip and pin and using online banking. My pin transactions always show up straight away.

I'm never slow at paying and always have my purse out before I'm even at the till

YANBU.
I used to primarly use contactless until a couple years ago when I realised that every time I used it my card would stop working at ATMs. I went through about 3 cards having them replaced and eventually decided it wasn't worth the hassle anymore. No problems since. Smile

GunpowderGelatine · 21/08/2018 23:00

It takes the same time for contactless as it does chip and pin to clear

Not on mine it doesn't. If I had say £500 in my account, then spent £10 on chip and pin, my balance would immediately show £490. With contactless it remains at £500 for anything from 1-3 days and it's hard to keep track of I find

0h · 21/08/2018 23:01

It's been YEARS since I even used chip and pin so contactless is a foreign world to me. Grin

I like to use cash for everything. I'm fairly poor and I keep on track and in budget easier if I only use cash.

Clairetree1 · 21/08/2018 23:01

all aspects of your card will have been blocked, EXCEPT the contactless facility, which isn't blockable.

So it might still be being used somewhere, in your name. You might not get the bill right now, but who knows in the future? and anyway, I wouldn't want this to be happening even if the bank is paying for the loss.

SimonBridges · 21/08/2018 23:02

you may not be aware the if a contactless card is stolen, it is impossible to cancel.

Utter nonsense.

Glumglowworm · 21/08/2018 23:02

I don’t have contactless. I thought when I got a new debit card (old one expired) earlier this year then I would get a contactless card but I didn’t.

I frequently say apologetically “I don’t have contactless” but I’ve never had a cashier say anything other than “that’s fine”. Sometimes they ask if I have contactless but again they’re fine when I say no.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/08/2018 23:02

Well, you're in for a nasty shock, then, because not all chip and pin transactions do show up instantly.

Either you've been very lucky that they've always come out on time, or you are not as careful as you think.

I mentioned slowness paying as it seemed a possibility given two different cashiers asked you to hurry up.

GunpowderGelatine · 21/08/2018 23:03

Yes bluemoon I hate that they do it so quickly and don't give you a chance to do it yourself. That's surely not allowed!

HidingFromMyKids · 21/08/2018 23:03

My card isn't even capable of contact less and I will hold off as long as I can!
Just say yours hasn't got it OP.

butterflysugarbaby · 21/08/2018 23:03

Yeah - like a few others, the 'contactless' transactions don't take any longer to show up on my account than the chip and PIN transactions. Maybe it depends on the bank.

The only thing that takes 4-5 days to show, is 'pay at the pump' petrol payments.

SimonBridges · 21/08/2018 23:04

All contactless does is transfer your card details to the machine. If that card has been cancelled then the contactless will simply not work.

buttermilkwaffles · 21/08/2018 23:04

I’ve never heard the thing about having to enter your pin every £70, certainly not true for me.

Same here. I did have a refusal once though and the checkout guy at Lidl said that it can happen if the card is used several times in one day, especially if it is for near the maximum amount each time. (Anti fraud precaution I guess). In my case it was because it was a brand new card and I forgot I had not used it yet - I have always been asked for a pin on first use and then never been asked again.

So it might be the case that it gets asked for at £70 but only if that £70 occurs on the same day? I have never spent £70 on contactless in one day so I don't know though.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/08/2018 23:05

claire, that is such bollocks. It was cancelled. Trust me.

If you are so concerned, report your card stolen, then try the contactless facility a few days later. It won't work. Again, I know this because I've been scatty enough to do it.

LemonysSnicket · 21/08/2018 23:08

Well, it's a bit like people insisting on using the swipe method when chip and pin came in.

If you're worried about theft you can keep it in a special hard case wallet which stops it. Or get a card like Monzo or starling which you can transfer your money to and contactless payments are instantly deducted, they also track your spending and help you budget.

BakedBeans47 · 21/08/2018 23:08

I didn’t like it when it didn’t show as being taken out of my bank right away, but now it does I’ll generally use it.

GunpowderGelatine · 21/08/2018 23:08

Of course contactless cards can be cancelled 🙄 what a load of crap. You really think all the banking technology there is and they're not able to stop a card payment because someone tapped it rather than put it in a machine? Bollocks

Simply not true. Even the Halifax website is very clear about this, and it states contactless payments often won't show up until then come out, making you falsely believe there's more cash in there at a glance than there really isn

It would appear that I am in a minority since I see and hear this sort of thing so often but I never cease to be amazed at how careless people are with their finances. If having £30/£40/£50 less in your account than is showing up is going to be a problem or a worry then surely you would just keep better track of what you spend. It isn't a contactless card that is the problem, it is being unable to remember how often you've spent money and how much you've spent. As I say, I appear to be unusual but I find it hard to see how you wouldn't remember.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/08/2018 23:11

YY dontmake. Plus, there are plenty of times a chip and pin transaction takes longer to show up, and I find it hard to believe anyone would be able to cope with that but not with contactless?

butterflysugarbaby · 21/08/2018 23:11

And yes I agree that chip and PIN sometimes doesn't show up right away too.

And it is bollocks that a contactless card is impossible to cancel!

Where the fuck did THAT bunch of poo come from?!

And I see a few people are saying they don't appear to have had a limit on their contactless payments. Maybe it depends on your bank, and your account Smile
