Office jobs are great because...

Ok so I am going back to my office job (which I find stressful and frustrating) soon after my maternity leave finishes.

AIBU to ask people out there to cheer me up by telling me what's great about your office job?

What do you and your colleagues do to brighten your day? To keep yourselves happy and maybe even entertained?

We sometimes get bacon sandwiches in on a Friday. That will be something I can look forward to. Could do with some more ideas though! And reminders of the good points. Like getting to sit down I suppose! Feel like I am grasping straws here...

I like not having to constantly talk to people.

I like having my own desk.

I even (shhh) enjoy the commute.

On Fridays I buy a coffee to take home. Big treat!

Air conditioning!

KarinVogel · 06/08/2018 18:46

You get to dress in normal clothes and go out to be with other adults. Most of these adults will like to see pictures of your little one - well, from time to time anyway.
You can have a drink and a snack and finish both in your own time. You can carry on a conversation with other adults while you do this -or not ,at your choosing. Some of your conversations will not have the remotest thing to do with children.
You can go to the toilet whenever you please and dont have to tell anyone or wait until 'the boss' is asleep until you tiptoe away.

However -Our air conditioning worked furiously all through the winter - we all wore coats and gloves in the office. They decided to 'fix' it 4 weeks ago and it will now take 6 more weeks until they can try again. It was over 30 in the office today. So its not all good - but at least you have company while you complain about the cold/heat.

I love my office job! I can't wait to go back after ny maternity.

Air conditioning, people to talk to, Popping off to shop for snacks/drinks whenever, Someone normally always brings snacks in, flexi time...i could go on !

RavenLG · 06/08/2018 18:48

Yes to free Air Con!
Free tea, coffee, milk and biscuits
Sometimes free breakfast (which often has leftovers so free lunch too!)
Predictability and reliability
No weekend working

possumgoddess · 06/08/2018 18:49

Air conditioning.... I wish!!! I have no idea how hot our office is at the moment but I can tell you that before Christmas, without any heating on, and with the window opened, our office was registering 27 degrees. You can imagine what it is like now! We have fans on the walls and I have brought my own can for my desk but they just stir the hot air around. What do I like about my office job? We have a lovely lady who comes round with a trolleyful of goodies mid-morning ( which I have to stop myself buying) and we have some amazing bakers who bring in yummy cakes (which I have to stop myself eating). Otherwise, not a lot really.... I like not having to stand up all day and I like being in out of the rain.

CheshireSplat · 06/08/2018 18:49

A cup of tea or coffee, pretty much whenever I want one.

Interesting colleagues to chat to.

I really enjoy working in an office. Working 9-5 (I wish), what a way to make a living!

peachgreen · 06/08/2018 18:50

I'm on maternity leave and as much as I'm enjoying it, the idea of being able to drink a hot cup of coffee in silence is bliss right now.

Sparklesocks · 06/08/2018 18:51

I have work in office jobs and service/retail jobs and I would pick Office every time.

One major thing which I think people overlook is that you can sit down at an office job and you can’t in retail/service. I used to work in a busy bar and when I came home my feet would be unbearable. A friend of mine has been working in service/hospitality for 20 years, she currently manages a busy cafe in a museum and has major back issues - her GP thinks being on her feet all day for so many years is part of the cause.

BeeFarseer · 06/08/2018 18:54

I love it.

I get to wear different clothes every day and look nice. I was in a rut being at home and I'd wear the same sort of thing all the time and not really make an effort.

Sitting down is not to be underestimated.

Being an adult in your own right again, not an extension of your child.

Writersblock2 · 06/08/2018 18:58

Really, it’s the snacks (which you try and avoid and feel guilty about if you don’t), and the sitting down, and the pretending to be naice. Those are the perks. Oh, and the mostly no weekends!

PurpleWithRed · 06/08/2018 18:58

Things I appreciated about going back to work in an office:

  1. being able to shut the loo door and take as long as I wanted to wee or even poo (do remember to shut the door, you may be out of the habit, and to lock it too)
  2. grownups to talk to who forced me to talk about things other than nappies, leaking breasts and the state of my undercarriage
  3. tea and coffee whenever I wanted
  4. being able to concentrate on one thing for more than 3 minutes before being interrupted (does depend on your office of course)
Roo2012 · 06/08/2018 18:59

My colleague and I don't at each other, there are so many song lyrics which are just begging to be sung mid conversation. We're often the only two in so it's acceptable. Have done it in front of others before, not so great.
Like the others say, hot drinks, no one saying Mummy, Mummy, Mummy. (Although I do miss them in school hols)

Seniorschoolmum · 06/08/2018 19:00

Holding intelligent conversations instead of mum & baby groups.
(I’m sorry, I really did try but The wheels on the Bus nearly drove me to drink)

Oblomov18 · 06/08/2018 19:01

I adore my job. Air conditioning, chatting to colleagues, as much tea, biscuits and breakfast as anyone wants. Peace. Sitting down for 6 hours. What's not to like?

HermioneKipper · 06/08/2018 19:02

Yes to sitting down! I work 3 days a week after going back after Mat leave and and while I don’t care as much as I used to, my colleagues make it worth it. So nice to be able to chat about non-baby stuff. Lots of opportunities for tea and coffee and being able to drink it hot. Taking lunch breaks and going for a walk/shopping without a small person making it tricky. Reading my book on my commute.

HermioneKipper · 06/08/2018 19:02

Ooh and air con is bliss

Travellerfromanantiqueland · 06/08/2018 19:05

Sitting with a roomful of fantastic supportive colleagues.

Someone making you a cup of tea and bringing it to your desk.

Going for a stroll at lunchtime.

Sharing other people's happiness, and hopefully helping them when they are having a bad time.

Surprise presents arriving on your desk.

Being with people who listen when you need a bit of a rant but would never judge you afterwards.

Sharing dog/cat/holiday/family photos.

delphguelph · 06/08/2018 19:06

Air conditioning.
Hot coffee.
Mind numbing conversation with adults.
The pay.
Ordering stationary.
MNetting freely.
Shutting the door.
The cafe downstairs.
The fit workmen who are working on the building opposite.

delphguelph · 06/08/2018 19:07

Spotify on the pc, boss away, yippeee

Fightthebear · 06/08/2018 19:09

Structure, challenge, a laugh and a regular salary.

LemonysSnicket · 06/08/2018 19:10

Air conditioning, interesting conversation, learning new things.

LemonysSnicket · 06/08/2018 19:10

Oh and 4pm champagne

Seniorschoolmum · 06/08/2018 19:11

Lemony, where do you work? Do they need anyone new. Envy

Elledouble · 06/08/2018 19:12

Friendship. Freedom to come and go as I please. Freedom to swear and have a rant if I need to. Air conditioning.

I love my office!
