Office jobs are great because...

Ok so I am going back to my office job (which I find stressful and frustrating) soon after my maternity leave finishes.

AIBU to ask people out there to cheer me up by telling me what's great about your office job?

What do you and your colleagues do to brighten your day? To keep yourselves happy and maybe even entertained?

We sometimes get bacon sandwiches in on a Friday. That will be something I can look forward to. Could do with some more ideas though! And reminders of the good points. Like getting to sit down I suppose! Feel like I am grasping straws here...

If I wear something nice, people notice and compliment me.
Tea on tap.
If I make an effort, I am thanked by my colleagues.
Catching up with my lovely colleagues lives - a pleasant wee soap opera update every morning.
Lovely surroundings - I work in a beautiful building.

Fang2468 · 06/08/2018 19:30

Being able to drink a coffee in peace, and buying a coffee on the way into work. Eating a chocolate bar in peace, lunch time to mumsnet or whatever.

Believeitornot · 06/08/2018 19:33

Adult company, lunch breaks, pub trips.

FaFoutis · 06/08/2018 19:34

Being able to go home.
I work from home so I'm always at work.

lljkk · 06/08/2018 19:35

Air con! Nice view, free tea, talking about brainy things, different people to talk to.

springmachine · 06/08/2018 19:36

I like peeing in peace
I like proper coffee
I like adult conversation
I like listening to the radio rather than children's tv
I like sitting down and not having to be on high alert for accidents all the time
I like being able to pop to the shops in my break without having to sort pram / buggy etc

StealthPolarBear · 06/08/2018 19:37

Interesting work, challenging, hopefully.
Not being at the mercy of the elements, I often feel sorry for people who work outdoors (and they probably feel sorry for me stuck indoors).
A job you can probably do in less than peak physical fitness.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/08/2018 19:44

"One major thing which I think people overlook is that you can sit down at an office job and you can’t in retail/service."

That was going to be my number 1 thing, but then I realised it's office compared with being on maternity leave rather than compared with other jobs. Of course, the sitting is also a bad thing, causes lots of stiff neck and shoulders and overweight. I suppose the ideal is a job where you can stand, walk or sit a bit.

I also usually like being inside and (usually at least) being able to take a break when I want.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/08/2018 19:45

"Interesting work, challenging, hopefully."

A lot of office work isn't like that.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/08/2018 19:46

"Ordering stationary. "

Really? You like that?

BetsyBigNose · 06/08/2018 19:47

You get to go for a wee on your own and nobody calls you Mummy!

ChikiTIKI · 06/08/2018 19:47

Wow these are great! I am starting to feel better already :)

We don't have air con sadly and I hear it's sweltering in the office at the moment. One of the main reasons I left my old job was the air con though. It was so cold and the people who were allowed to adjust it always refused.

Thanks for the reminder about locking toilet doors. I've actually already been walked in on by the male cleaner while getting changed after cycling in so quite vigilant about that thankfully but I am very forgetful these days.

It will be nice chatting to people again there are some lovely people in our office.

In my team we have an agreement where if one of us announces they are having a chocolatey moment, someone else will answer their phone if it rings and tell whoever it is to call back later so they don't have to swallow their chocolate before savouring it. You just don't get those kind of "me time" perks whenever you want when you're looking after a baby!

Will keep reading, lots more to read it seems!

Someone else will make you a cup of tea and you'll get to drink it while it's hot!

Kemer2018 · 06/08/2018 19:51

Nice showers. Save on my water bill.
Don't get sweaty
Don't get physically exhausted or achy.
Air con
Near shops if I need them
Good colleagues
Wages
Flexi

WhirlwindHugs · 06/08/2018 19:52

I've gone back to work recently.

I like talking to adults!
I like getting to spend a few hours solidly ploughing through a task without interruption (okay, doesn't always happen - but more than with small kids around!)
I like being recognised when something I'm doing is going well.
I like being part of a team on a project.
I like it when their is cake.

My job is really varied and I enjoy that too.

ChikiTIKI · 06/08/2018 19:57

Oh yeah it will be nice to put on nice clothes and then have them stay nice for the whole day, and not have them covered in a biscuity paste and milk.

While sitting is nice I am bit worried I will become unfit. My fitness is a lot better now I walk everywhere and push the pram. Walking without a pram will be nice on my lunch break though.

I've just said nice loads of times but can't be bothered to change it, sorry!

Coming and going as I please will be nice too. I can work in other departments that I provide a service to so I can go and sit in their offices too if I want. And come to think of it I probably will since they have air con!

No one calls me mummy at work
No one climbs my legs
I get to drink HOT drinks
I can wear heels
I can go to a shop at lunch on my own - this is the best thing ever for me!

AJPTaylor · 06/08/2018 20:00

All of human life. Seriously my last job was like a bbc2 serial drama. And at times it was like a victoria wood comedy.
Im going back mid sept to a new job after a year off. The salary is exciting me.

TheCatFromOuterSpace · 06/08/2018 20:02

God I wish we had aircon!

Many office jobs are relatively flexible, which you will appreciate when you need to leave early because your child is ill.

You get to drink a hot drink, wee in privacy, and talk about things that aren't babies.

Gorrillagirlfanclub · 06/08/2018 20:05

I like having my own supply of stuff at my desk. Like food make up tea etc.

I like that I can get my own stuff done if needed. Like a personal email or research on a purchase. Or shopping

I like that if I'm having a knackered day I don't have to physically do anything!
I can listen to music and podcasts while I work.

It gives me a reason to make a bit of effort with my clothes.

I had shop jobs at uni so actually being able to sit down and be in charge of my time is actually great. When I feel grumpy amount it I remember this!

JustLurk1ng · 06/08/2018 20:07

Adult conversation/banter

Being able to go to the toilet without a toddler screaming and trying to open the door

Free coffee machines

Air con

Getting paid £££ to play with excel all day (nerd face)

BitchQueen90 · 06/08/2018 20:09

Flexibility. Daytime hours. Closing for 2 weeks over Christmas. Having always worked in retail/hospitality I love actually having decent hours, weekends and bank holidays off.

I'm in a very junior position but I get to work school hours and I love it.

No dealing with the public either Grin

StealthPolarBear · 06/08/2018 20:12

No which is why I said hopefully :)

AnotherOriginalUsername · 06/08/2018 20:12

Colleagues have birthdays and that usually means cake

Polarbearflavour · 06/08/2018 20:15

Being paid.
Not having to deal with the public.
No unsocial hours.
