Office jobs are great because...

Ok so I am going back to my office job (which I find stressful and frustrating) soon after my maternity leave finishes.

AIBU to ask people out there to cheer me up by telling me what's great about your office job?

What do you and your colleagues do to brighten your day? To keep yourselves happy and maybe even entertained?

We sometimes get bacon sandwiches in on a Friday. That will be something I can look forward to. Could do with some more ideas though! And reminders of the good points. Like getting to sit down I suppose! Feel like I am grasping straws here...

Great coworkers, a fantastic company president, dogs in the office.

The salary doesn't hurt, either!

Thirtyrock39 · 06/08/2018 20:19

My colleagues are lovely and proper friends who I enjoy spending time with
Sometimes I get lovely feedback from my boss (rarely get this at home !)
I like driving to appointments in my car on my own listening to cds my kids won't have on at a loud volume
Eating lunch uninterrupted
People sometimes make me a cup of tea
I'm quite a planner and like organising things

Bobbybobbins · 06/08/2018 20:20

I am a teacher and sometimes envy what I see as the benefits of an office job: being around adults; going to the toilet or having a coffee whenever I wanted; having a nice calm space to work at.

PerspicaciaTick · 06/08/2018 20:21

We have a steady supply of sweets and cakes. The rest is a bit shit TBH.

Oh yeah I go wild

Mine is semi office. I have my own office but there's a communal one outside it.

We all do Ken Bruce popmaster.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 06/08/2018 20:32

I love the social side of it – pub lunches, after-work drinks (only if you like your colleagues, of course! And if you don't need to rush home to the kids). The Monday morning chat about what everyone got up to. I've been really fortunate to work with great groups of funny, interesting people. It really is the team that makes the job!

bluemascara · 06/08/2018 20:40

I loooove my office job
It's easy work, it's clean, nice environment
The People are amazing
We have such fun and I've made life long friends
We occasionally do some work!

This - are you one of my colleagues ?

Loopytiles · 06/08/2018 20:54

When had small DC and was working when very sleep deprived and finding it very hard, the main benefit (pay aside!) was not having to change nappies, prep three meals a day (DC2 was super fussy and our amazing CM provided fantastic lunches and teas) or supervise a roving and destructive DC1!

Sometimes when knackered at my desk I’d look under colleaguesm desks thinking had seen DC1 up to mischief.

Loopytiles · 06/08/2018 20:55

Also, the office provides constant comedy due to human weirdness.

bluemascara · 06/08/2018 21:00

@tass1960 maybe lol
I just love it! We aren't stretched, we are very well paid for what we do and I wouldn't change it for the world!
It's a great way to pay the bills. I've been there almost 20 years now, all my adult life. I'll never leave now!

Growingboys · 06/08/2018 21:02

Clever, interesting, young colleagues who keep me up to date and make me laugh.

As above but older ones, too.

Regular, dependable income so even if DH says no, I can buy expensive things if I want. And save up.

Having interesting things to talk to people about. When I was a SAHM I found making conversation to strangers eg at dinner parties tough as I just did baby stuff all day long and felt I had nothing to talk about. (I work in an interesting profession so it makes chit chat pretty easy).

Getting printing done at my boss's expense - a joy when our last printer broke to think fuck it, nor buying another one.

Nicking the stationery. Great pens.

Expenses.

ForalltheSaints · 06/08/2018 21:04

The pay
Being in a warm place in the winter
Most of the people I work with (even though I would never call them friends, as friends are for the rest of life), and especially where we have common interests.
The occasional travel (never outside the UK)

Growingboys · 06/08/2018 21:08

no one climbs my legs

Hahahahaha! My DC are well past that stage but this made me laugh!

ThomasinaMouse · 06/08/2018 21:09

I work in an office but don't have a lot of the above! Its frowned upon to go to the loo outside of break times for example. And I work shifts so unsociable hours although mostly I prefer the night shifts if I'm honest. They're quieter!

I do however have air con whcih is bliss. Adult conversation. Generally treated well and not shouted at are undervalued (unfortunately I can't say this for home)!
Uniform which saves fannying about finding something to wear. It's optional a lot of the time though so if I WANT to wear something else I can do. Coffee. Nice chairs. Doing something that's appreciated and respected. Being paid for my time!

ChikiTIKI · 06/08/2018 21:13

We have not been long in the legs climbing stage. Something I think I will enjoy is at least 8 hours a day of nobody touching me at all! Aaaaah personal space :)

LakieLady · 06/08/2018 21:17

So jealous of all these people with air con at work. Our team was relegated to a former archive room without air con. There are windows all along one wall, but only one in 3 of them open. They tilt and only open about 6" and let next to no air in. Freezing in winter too, as it's a big space but only has 2 tiny electric wall heaters.

We now have to share it with blow-ins who hot desk, which has put paid to sweary ranting, having a laugh and sing-songs.

We mostly work out of a supermarket cafe on our laptops and avoid going in the office. It means we have to pay for our drinks, but at least we don't get glared at every time we talk.

mimibunz · 06/08/2018 21:19

What else would you do? Unless you are a nurse or sales person?

WilburIsSomePig · 06/08/2018 21:21

I sort of miss working in an office. If you work in one with nice people, it's a great place to work!

I miss - the laughs. I've friends that I met in an office job 20 years ago that I still see now.

The fact that someone always seems to be making tea. Lovely.

Bacon, sausage and tattie scone rolls on a Friday from the bakers.

Icequeen01 · 06/08/2018 21:23

I get to look after the school dog who is the cutest, fluffiest little darling you have ever come across. I would love a dog but can't due to working full time so this gives me the best of both worlds!

BonnieF · 06/08/2018 21:28

Bloody stupid irritating pop music blaring out from a grotty little radio.

Too hot in summer, too cold in winter.

Seeing the same old faces all day every day.

Pointless, endless boring meetings.

Constant collections because Kerry in accounts, who you have never spoken to, has got engaged / given birth / been ill / married / left / died.

Listening to your colleagues moaning about their weight as they sit on their rapidly expanding arses while stuffing their faces with chocolate, cakes and biscuits.

Am I doing this right? Wink

Oly5 · 06/08/2018 22:06

Hot coffee and tea, not having to be paranoid about the kids trying to kill themselves on the furniture, popping out for lunch or snacks,
Chatting to colleagues,... time away from my kids!!

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 06/08/2018 22:31

Quiet. Time to think. An opportunity to use your brain beyond parenting. Adult conversations that aren't related to children. Drinking tea that's still hot. Being called by your own name, not "mum". Going to the loo on your own, with no interruptions. Asking for something to be done and it actually gets done without the need for you to repeat yourself a million times. No one handing you half chewed food or hanging off/climbing your legs...
