To ask if you are a normal weight...

If you are a normal weight as in roughly within the range of healthy BMi what an average day of eating looks like?

I’ve just never been an average weight and I’ve just lost 7 stone but struggling to loose the last 4. I wonder how people who maintain a healthy bmi do it? Do you never have the odd piece of cake? Or chocolate? Do you generally eat well but indulge sparingly?

Honestly the amount of people on these sorts of threads that say they're a healthy weight and then detail a week's eating full of raw, whole foods, and a shopping list straight from Holland and Barrett always makes me giggle. I don't think it's necessarily a realistic overview of the majority of people who are a medically standard weight. So to answer your question, hell yes I eat cake! I love a good snickers bar and a glass of wine is never off limits. Having a decent knowledge of portion size and knowing roughly the number of calories in foods is an easy way for me to make sure that if I indulge one day, to get it back under control on the next 😊 life is no fun with no cake!

Angharad07 · 04/08/2018 19:04

Have always eaten what I wanted but stuck to small portions. If eating out always leave a quarter of the food left on the plate (unless at a fancy restaurant that churns out kitten sized portions!). Regular excercise to tone up but it doesn’t work on its own to keep the weight off.

Japonicaisstillahorsygirl · 04/08/2018 19:05

Weekday as folllows:

Breakfast one slice whole meal toast with marmite, couple of table spoons natural yogurt and 150 ml glass juice
Lunch either leftovers or homemade soup or sandwich
Snack mid afternoon apple
Dinner something homemade eg fish pots and salad or veg lasagne

Drinks black coffee or water. alcohol only on Friday and Saturday then only a couple of drinks. Sunday dinner may be a bit heavier or restaurant.
I can stay slim if there is no snacking, picking whilst cooking and really small portions. Don’t exclude anything just small amounts and crips only on saturdays

ManorGreyhound · 04/08/2018 19:06

I eat the same as overweight people.

I just eat less of it.

Raver84 · 04/08/2018 19:07

Hi I'm a normal weight I weigh 9.5 stone and and 5:5 ins. Bmi of 22.

I eat
Breakfast. 1 Oatibix or 2 wheetabix. Or porridge.

Lunch a piece of fruit. Small chocolate bar. Veg stir fry, soup or sometime 2 x toast. Lunch Is always 500 cals.

Dinner protine like a piece of salmon with salad or lots of veg. Chicken with veg. Chilli but with veg and no rice. Piece of fruit. Again around 500 cal.

Pudding always a big piece of cake or a chocolate bar or something like crumble. I eat this around 9pm.

I don't snack at all.

I only drink one or two glasses of wine a week.

One a saturday I eat whatever I like tonight it's fish and chips but don't go mad for carbs as I'm not that keen.

I exercise for 45 mins at least per day. Mix of weights , dog walking and running.

MissMildred · 04/08/2018 19:10

I'm normal weight. I eat everything but I think I naturally lean towards small portions. For example I have the same size of dinner plate as the children and not the large one that MrMildred would use. Breakfast is usually a few crackers and cheese/ apple or a bowl of porridge. Lunch is a sandwich with a few veg batons and a yoghurt. I do eat crisps but have really cut down as now I'm over 40 I do feel the weight can sneak on more easily.
I also don't eat until I'm stuffed - I stop when I'm comfortable. I do, however, need to do much more exercise.

Warmworm · 04/08/2018 19:15

The difference between my eating habits and those of the overweight people I know is:

I eat smaller portions
I don’t eat takeaway, maybe 3-4 times a year
I drink less alcohol

But I often eat shit food like everyone else.

Namechangeforhair · 04/08/2018 19:15

Following. I'm a healthy bmi but I snack too much and eat crap lunches when at home. Just pick. Need some ideas.

pennycarbonara · 04/08/2018 19:16

Have you seen this recent thread?

awetpuddle · 04/08/2018 19:16

I don't exclude anything, I guess I just eat smaller portions. i eat when I am hungry till I am satiated, not overfull. I eat crisps, cake, chocolate etc. I have sweet things after lunch and dinner, but maybe just a small portion.

fairgame84 · 04/08/2018 19:17

I'm 5'4, 51kg, BMI 19 and I do not eat healthily. I calorie count to maintain my weight at the minute as I'm off away next week. I'm a term time worker and its easy to boredom snack when I'm not at work.

Breakfast is coffee and 2x2 finger kitkats or a couple of rich tea biscuits.
Mid morning a cup of tea.
Lunch cup of tea and either 2 slices of toast and butter or crisps, fruit and a corner yoghurt.
Afternoon snack cup of tea and piece of fruit.
Tea could be anything like macaroni cheese or seabass and rice or pizza and wedges or curry and naan bread.

I have a sweet tooth and a carb addiction. I do eat cake once or twice per week.

If I'm left to my own devices then I find I a have days where I have very little appetite and days where I'm ravenous.

HotChoc10 · 04/08/2018 19:18

I am 5"7 and weigh about 9 stone. I am also in mid 20s and haven't had children which I imagine makes it easier to stay a 'normal' weight.

I don't eat breakfast at home but have a banana when I get to the office.

Snack on whatever biscuits and cake are in my office on any given day.

Lunch is couscous with roast Vegetables (I do a big tray every few days), an orange and a packet of cheesy biscuits.

Dinner is a homecooked meal of some kind, usually a curry or a risotto or pasta dish or something. Sometimes some toast with lurpak or peanut butter when I get home before dinner (more often than not probably).

I only drink water or black coffee, or if I am going out (probably 1-2 times a week) a few glasses of wine or G&Ts.

I also run two or three times a week. Usually one 10k and one (or two) 7 or 8ks.

To OP, you have done amazingly to lose so much weight already and you should be so proud of yourself.

fairgame84 · 04/08/2018 19:19

Just to add, I don't drink alcohol due to a heart condition. I rarely eat takeaways and I cook from scratch.

I used to do weights but I can't excercise at the moment due to my heart condition.

OttilieKnackered · 04/08/2018 19:20

BMI is 23. Today (bad example) fry up (2 x sausages, bacon, eggs, 1 x whole meal toast with butter, beans) but I only ate about 2/3s. Just had cheese sandwich and salad with a toffee yoghurt.

I am very short though so a taller person would need more.

More typical day (work day) would be:

B - 2 satsumas
L - tuna mayo roll, salad, cheese slices, pickled beetroot
D - roasted carrots, hummus, whole meal pitta sticks. (Lots of each)

I walk 3-5 miles a day as well.

flamingofridays · 04/08/2018 19:21

Honestly I'm an average weight and my diet is crap I eat loads of chocolate have at least 1 takeaway a week on average.

I do kettle bells 15 mins 5 x a week but whether that makes a difference I'm not sure.

Boulshired · 04/08/2018 19:22

Knowing why you are overweight helps to understand what you need to do. Sugar gives me highs and lows and when I allow myself to eat very sugary food, I then need more and the rollercoaster begins. I tend to have a taste of high sugar food now rather than a portion. Knowing your own triggers will help you to continue then maintain.

Ansumpasty · 04/08/2018 19:25

I’m normal weight, size 8.

Rice crispies and an egg for breakfast

A baguette and chicken soup for lunch

Bag of walkers crisps
Some sweets
Piece of cheese

Fish fingers, cous cous and green beans for tea

Will have danish blue cheese and crackers before bed.

I don’t excercise but I have a 3 and 6 year old and never stop

Mari50 · 04/08/2018 19:26

I’m 5’4” and 9 stone, mid 40’s
For breakfast I have cereal- porridge or fruit and fibre or a smoothie (spinach/pineapple/mango/carrot/strawberries/ginger and yogurt)
Mid morning - tea with milk
Lunch- depends on how organised I am but can be a roll and crisps or a salad.
Afternoon -tea with milk
Dinner- M&S ready meal (never more than 500kcal) or fish/chicken with salad/veg
I drink more than a few beers and gin and tonics through the week.
I don’t drink soft drinks, I try not to have biscuits or sweets/chocolate in the house. I don’t do any regular exercise (but I’m very mobile at work) although I’m going to change that as could do with toning up.
I make sure what I’m serving up food- esp dinner I put it on a small plate.
I have a real sweet tooth though and can put away a family bag of haribo on the drive home and if I have ice cream in the house I don’t plate it up I eat it from the tub.
My problem is I eat fast, friends who are properly slim (not that many now we’re older) eat their food slowly..... mindful eating I think they call it.

Mari50 · 04/08/2018 19:27

God, that’s so long- sorry

Notfootball · 04/08/2018 19:29

Like PP, I just eat smaller portions than overweight people but I have a good appetite. I eat cake, biscuits, sweets and chocolate but not everyday and not the whole pack. Only have a few drinks on the weekend, no midweek alcohol. I run a couple of times a week, walk most days and hula hoop.

I don’t count calories, I just don’t eat until I’m full.

Acitywallandatrampoline · 04/08/2018 19:30

I would have around 1800-2000 calories normally. I know portion control and I feel like I eat a lot. I also drink too. But I workout with weights x3 and run x2. Hit 10,000 steps as a minimum and have an active lifestyle. Sometimes I have pudding a few times a week too. I never restrict. I do think how active helps massively though.

ch0c0milkrox · 04/08/2018 19:31

Jeanclaudejackety · 04/08/2018 19:31

You sound like you've done absolutely amazingly with your weight loss so far tbh

I'm 60kg and 5ft5 so normal although I could be more toned!
Today I've had

McDonald's sausage and egg muffin and a black coffee and 330ml fresh orange for breakfast

Turkey breast, rocket, peppers and onion on brown bread with teaspoon of mayo for lunch with half a bag of crisps for lunch

Small steak pan fried in spray oil, around 2 tablespoons of rice, salad leaves, cherry Tom's and spring onion with balsamic and 4 new potato's for tea

Going cinema so will have a large diet coke, share a medium pop corn and have a glass of white wine with soda afterwards

That's a usual day for me except the McDonald's breakfast I usually have that once a month or so. I also have a very active job in a stuffy building so have spent 8 hours plus today on my feet sweating.

I lost 4 stone last year due to an illness and have lost another stone since through changing my eating habits . I’m now well within a healthy BMI and a size 12 , I’d like to lose at least another 7/8 lbs . I have a small portion of bran flakes with 4/5 prunes for breakfast , lunch and dinner are varied as we eat out a lot but usually at least one is a salad of some description . What I’ve changed is that I don’t eat crisps , no fizzy drinks , very few snacks and smaller portions . I have always been tee total and rarely eat chocolate . For exercise I walk the dog for 1-2 hrs a day and do Pilates
