To ask if you are a normal weight...

If you are a normal weight as in roughly within the range of healthy BMi what an average day of eating looks like?

I’ve just never been an average weight and I’ve just lost 7 stone but struggling to loose the last 4. I wonder how people who maintain a healthy bmi do it? Do you never have the odd piece of cake? Or chocolate? Do you generally eat well but indulge sparingly?

Massive - not 'assume'

areyouactuallykidding · 04/08/2018 21:39

These threads just highlight the luck of the genetic draw. I eat the same or less than a lot of people here and I am 4 stone overweight.

The only time I got down to a nearly healthy weight as an adult I was eating 2 slices of toast a day and nothing else

WillowRose79 · 04/08/2018 21:47

Apparently my BMI is healthy but I do wanna loose weight- I've been exercising loads and do have a healthy diet but I'm thinking my portions are too big- it's all salad/veg etc so thought it was okay but maybe that's why it's not dropping as fast as it should!?

Verbena87 · 04/08/2018 21:47

Then that clearly isn’t a ‘healthy’ weight for you! And yes to genetics: I’m from a family of skinny Minnie’s and know friends who eat much less than me and are overweight. It’s a bugger.

adaline · 04/08/2018 22:10

I eat the same as everyone else, just less of it. And I don't really drink alcohol or full fat fizzy drinks.

Today, for example (not in order) I've eaten the following:

2 x chocolate chip brioche
An apple
2 oranges
1/2 bag popcorn
Tomato cuppa soup
Plum tomatoes
Cucumber
Olives with cheese
2 x crumpets with peanut butter
4 x "oaties" biscuits
Some mini millionaires bites and brownie bites from Tesco.
Several cups of tea (milk, no sugar)
2 cans of Diet Coke.

My BMI is 21.

I just eat everything in moderation, mainly low sugar stuff, I found drinking anything other than water and squash made me put on weight as it's empty calories. I'm a bmi of 22, 5'11 and 12 stone I think?

ElspethTascioni · 04/08/2018 22:40

My BMI is 22.7, which is on the high side for me, but I had a baby 10 months ago and haven’t shifted all the weight yet. I normally hover around the 20 mark.

I would say the bulk of our evening meals are healthy and home cooked, but other than that I don’t particularly watch what I eat. I generally don’t eat breakfast, because I don’t tend to be hungry yet, and I’ve been this way since my teens - except when pregnant! I usually just have a cup of tea, and might grab a banana for the commute to work if I do feel hungry.

When I’m working a busy day, i’ll Usually not have lunch, and just eat when I get home in the evening - it’s odd, on those days it’s like my body goes into survival mode and I don’t feel hungry particularly. But I have a job which is quite high adrenaline, and I think that’s why.

On a less busy day, i’ll Pick up lunch while i’m out and get sandwiches, crisps and a choc bar some days or a soup or a salad on others - depending on how fat I feel at the time! I usually try to cut down in carbs when I need to lose a few pounds.

I’ve got into bad habits when pregnant / BF or eating chocolate and crisps in the evenings after tea, but usually my house is a snack free zone - we buy for specific occasions only, because that’s the only way I avoid eating it all the time! We’ve just got back on the wagon again recently, and a snack would usually be some fruit or a slice of toast and marmite, or some ham or cheese as it comes!

I do have aberrations - I ate a box of matchmakers for my breakfast yesterday 🙈 but then I try to balance that out, and I didn’t eat again til my tea, and didn’t snack in the evening. So a healthy weight, but sometimes not a healthy diet!

oldsockeater · 04/08/2018 22:42

I eat a varied diet. Try to have one sweet thing a day (but often have 2 or 3 in reality). Beer or wine most nights but just one drink. Never drink any juice or fizzy stuff. Limit crisps to once or twice a week. Eat lots of dairy products and fruit. Eat normal foods for all meals. Eat out maybe once weekly, but just one course. Rarely have takeaway. Prefer a piece of cheese on toast really.

megletthesecond · 04/08/2018 22:45

How can a sweet tooth and carb addiction be eating cake a couple of times a week? Blush.
I eat cookies, muffins and pudding every day. Just not in huge quantities.

Emilizz34 · 04/08/2018 22:47

I’m 5ft 6 and weigh about 9.5 stone . BMI of around 21. I’ve been this size since I was mid 20s. Prior to that was around 8 stone since my teens but I looked awful . Really bony and flat chested .This is my post pregnancy size and it never alters .
Breakfast : Coffee with 1 sugar & bowl of All Bran. This keeps me full and I’m never hungry at lunchtime

Mid Morning: coffee with 1 sugar

Lunch: Hummus or smoked cheddar with 4-6 oatcakes and peppermint or fruit tea .

Dinner : It varies . Anything from curry & rice ,cottage pie, roast etc .

Bedtime : peppermint tea and bar of dairy milk chocolate

I eat veg but am very bad at eating fruit . I never eat between meals and don’t like desserts , cakes or biscuits as I get heartburn and stomach cramps after eating them . I love white wine and would drink around 14 units per week . I think the key to a healthy weight is portion control and not eating between meals .
Both my parents were very overweight . My 3 brothers and I were always very thin as children as my mother had very set ideas of the amounts that children should eat . Lunch would have been 2 fish fingers and a dessert spoon of beans . My younger sister was always overweight .Big age gap between her and other kids .My mother used to put honey in her bottle to “prevent colds” and give her chocolate bars in her lunchbox as she didn’t like school .She thought she was helping her but it started a cycle of secret comfort eating as a teenager and she has always been about 16/17 stone despite always being on a diet

Racecardriver · 04/08/2018 22:48

I'm smack bang in the middle of healthy bmi range. I don't have a typical eating day. Some days I don't eat half the day. Other days I start with cake and then just keep having more cake. Done days will be mostly fresh fruit/veg other days will be lentil soup and meat and eggs. I just make sure that I have met and ki exceeded requirements over the space of a week.

gamerwidow · 04/08/2018 22:52

I am at the top end of the BMI for my weight but I maintain my weight by only drinking small amounts of alcohol and only at the weekend, limiting carbs to once a day ( so salad for lunch/ pasta for dinner or sandwich for lunch/salad for dinner) and sticking to one ‘treat’ a day. If I want a chocolate bar or an ice cream I’ll have one but I won’t have anything else like that in one day. I do have to think about it though given free rein I could eat for Britain.

JillyArmeeen · 04/08/2018 22:52

I'm 5,1 and weigh about 8.5 stone, I never weigh myself.
feeling a little podgy at the mo by the feel of my clothes, size 10 top and bottom.
Probably not the best person to answer as I have a history of being a fussy eater and having weird rituals around food, never diagnosed with an eating disorder but have been unhealthy underweight in the past.
I don't eat 3meals a day as a regular thing.
On holiday I might but a normal day off or work day usually only 2, in any combination depending what's available or when I'm hungry.
Don't snack much, drunk too much and too many fizzy drinks, any kind of food I eat if I want it I have it, not the healthiest diet and don't exercise but have an active job.

donajimena · 04/08/2018 22:59

Having been on a group holiday with a group who were all overweight (by varying degrees) I noticed we all ate the same foodstuffs. They just ate an awful lot more of it. For example for breakfast I'd have a sausage, egg a spoonful of beans and a piece of toast. My friend would have double. Some mornings I'd have toast and grated tomato whereas they'd have the large fry up.
The same applied at dinner. Much bigger portions and if I fancied crackers and cheese I'd have one with a small piece of cheese but they'd have an awful lot more.
I don't ever feel hungry. My stomach is accustomed to small portions.
To give you an idea of our portions if we have a takeaway at home a curry portion and a rice portion will be enough for me and my mum and dad. Its not what you eat its how much

cliffdiver · 04/08/2018 23:04

My BMI teeters between underweight and healthy weight. I never feel like I have to watch what I eat.

Breakfast: Greek yogurt, fruit, honey and oats 4/7 days
1/7 days will be cheese straw
2/7 days (weekend) will be eggs or peanut butter on toast

Snack: apple, Sunbite crisps

Lunch: My school provides free meals to teachers so either have a lunch or jacket potato.
Previously I would have had salmon or lentil salad with vegetables served with a large salad.

Dinner: Homemade: roast / curry / pasta bake / spag meatballs etc

Rarely eat pudding - maybe 1 or 2 lollies a week.

Alcohol: bottle of Cava on a Friday night

Seniorschoolmum · 04/08/2018 23:10

I’m 5’8”, 63.5kg, cholesterol 5.1 I’m mid 50s
Desk job.

Today Breakfast - instant coffee with ss milk x 2
Lunch - mackerel in tomato sauce with green salad & radishes. Fresh plums. Glass of squash.
Afternoon snack- 2 x glasses of squash. 2 x tangerine.
Supper - sesame breadsticks with some balsamic vinegar& oil, 2 pork sausages with new potatoes, steamed kale& garlic. More squash.

I run twice a week and usually do one other activity. To be fair, in this hot weather all I really want is fruit & water. In cold weather I eat much more.

Sandstormbrewing · 04/08/2018 23:24

Yesterday was porridge with golden syrup and orange juice and a latte for breakfast, a Muller fruit corner for lunch, a steak and cheese sandwich with salad, a bag of Doritos for dinner and a small bowl of rice crispies as I got a bit peckish. Around 3 litres of water.

Thursday was the same for breakfast, tomato soup and half sandwich for lunch, dinner was sampi and peas.

Wednesday was yogurt and a latte for breakfast, salmon and salad sandwich for lunch and fish pie with peas for dinner.

I don't eat particularly healthy but just eat small portions. I rarely finish my food. For example the porridge was one of those Quaker pots you add water to, I ate half or slightly more. The sandwich I ate 3/4 of, the soup was half a tin. The fish pie was a small portion, scampi was around 5 pieces.

DelurkingAJ · 04/08/2018 23:24

Height and genetics help. I’m 5”10’ and c11 stone. I eat what I want when I want. Now I’m in my late 30s I’m trying to avoid snacking if I’m bored (not if I’m hungry, just eating because I don’t want to read the article at work or some such). I used to struggle to keep weight on (back in the days when I had time for exercise) so I think it’s luck of the draw. Have honestly never dieted or watched what I eat. Have made the odd lifestyle change (no full sugar fizzy drinks these days) but it’s been for health rather than weight reasons. If I eat lots one day though I won’t fancy food much he next day.

Typical day...
Two slices toast, glad OJ and black coffee for breakfast.
Snack about 10:30 (crisps, couple of biscuits, nuts)
Sandwich and chocolate bar for lunch
Snack about 4 (not a repeat but similar)
Supper about 8:30: meat, veg, carbs
Drink lots of squash and green tea. Alcohol at the weekends, rarely more than a couple of g&ts.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 04/08/2018 23:28

I don't consider myself as naturally slim, but I've been my weight for nearly 5 years now after losing 6 stone and am normal BMI so may be similar to you.

Basically I retrained myself in what I eat. I eat decent sized meals but bulk them out with vegetables to keep me more full and have dropped the amount of carbs (I'm no where near low carbing, but I was very very high carbing before). I still eat crisps, chocolate etc nearly every day but in far smaller portions. I don't drink as much as I used to but I still drink probably more than I should. I don't tend to eat out or get takeway which probably helps. I don't snack either, but make sure my meals can carry me through.

skankingpiglet · 04/08/2018 23:31

Im a size 12 with a BMI of 22.something.

I think it's not just food but how much you generally move around. I don't do any aerobic exercise and haven't for many years. I did yoga and occasionally swam before I had DCs. However I'm rarely sitting down. I walk quite a bit including school runs, and I do a physical job two days a week. I'm sure age is also a factor (I'm mid-30s). Since having children and reducing my strenuous working days from 5 to 2 I have found my weight is 1 or 2lb less but I'm squidgier (although I also used to eat 4 full meals, 2 inc puddings, and 2 good snacks then!)

I eat what I like mostly, but will consciously stop myself from eating, say, a whole pack of doughnuts (would still eat 2 or 3 though). Some days my diet looks like something from the pages of a health magazine (all whole foods and quinoa, freshly prepared) other days are probably fairly shocking. Today was dolcelatte on white bread for breakfast, random lunch of spring rolls, macaroni cheese bites, samosas, and falafel, then jacket with tuna mayo and cheese for dinner washed down with squash, coke, and cider along with some water over the course of the day. Not one fresh bit of veg and no fruit consumed Blush
A more typical day would be

  • breakfast a bowl of bran flakes with berries and/or banana with almond milk
  • Lunch a cheese sandwich, some crudites, a piece of fruit
  • snacks of crisps or ice cream plus some fruit and any 'good bits' left over from the DC's food
  • dinner of veggie pasta/risotto, maybe a filling salad (ie inc cous cous or potatoes) etc
  • drink mostly water with a glass of (sugared) squash and maybe an alcoholic drink on top

I eat portion sizes that make me feel full, which are probably 90% of DH's (he's 4" taller than me), although he snacks more and is generally less active.

RedDwarves · 04/08/2018 23:33

I am around 52kg at 5'7". I have always been thin and think genetics are mostly responsible for that. I think that I have inherited the beanpole figures of my dad, grandfather, great grandfather etc. The women in my family - with the exception of one cousin - are on the slightly "sturdier" side of average, and have a tendency to put on weight easier than I do.

But, despite the fact that I genuinely can eat just about whatever I like and not gain weight, I do watch what I eat and try to ensure that at least 80% of it is "healthy".

This morning I have had porridge with banana. That is 1/4 cup of traditional (not quick) oats, soaked in water, cooked in full fat milk and with a whole banana served on top. No sugar or honey. I do eat a tablespoon of local honey every day to help with hay fever, though.

I am going out for most of today, so my diet will be a bit different to what it would typically be, but most days at work I have the following:

  • Fruit (strawberries, banana, kiwi, blueberries, orange, mandarin, pears etc. some combination of these)
  • Yogurt (about 3 tablespoons)
  • A Birdseye steam fresh bag of veggies
  • A couple of biscuits or a Freddo chocolate
  • Sometimes a sandwich instead of the fruit or veg (white bread, either with peanut butter or Vegemite)

Dinner is always typical - chicken pie, lasagne, spag bol, quiche, sometimes we just have a big plate of roast veggies, stir fries etc.

If I want to eat chips or chocolate or whatever, I do, but I try not to keep too much of it in the house because I have difficulty stopping after a moderate amount. Basically, I allow myself to buy one treat each week (I only grocery shop once a week) and that has to last the week; if I eat it all in one day, that's just tough shit.

I walk between 6 and 8km every day, and ski a lot in winter. But I don't go to the gym or do anything beyond that.
