To ask if you are a normal weight...

If you are a normal weight as in roughly within the range of healthy BMi what an average day of eating looks like?

I’ve just never been an average weight and I’ve just lost 7 stone but struggling to loose the last 4. I wonder how people who maintain a healthy bmi do it? Do you never have the odd piece of cake? Or chocolate? Do you generally eat well but indulge sparingly?

I’m a healthy weight (size 10). I generally eat well - a typical day for me is a protein shake for breakfast (I start work early and struggle to eat at that time), fruit or nuts for snacks, a chicken salad wrap or soup for lunch, and a fairly balanced evening meal like curry, chilli or pasta (homemade with plenty of vegetables). I don’t really have a sweet tooth but if I want a bar of chocolate, I have one. I rarely drink fizzy pop, mostly water, but I do like a few glasses of wine on a weekend. We usually have a takeaway or “cheat meal” (oven pizza and chips etc) on a Saturday. I have a very active job and exercise 3-4 times a week. I was overweight until 18 months ago, I lost 2 stone with slimming world and another stone just eating sensibly and exercising and having occasional treats. I don’t deprive myself of anything but it’s rare that I eat to excess. I’ve been a healthy weight for about a year now.

musicalmama · 04/08/2018 20:08

I'm 5'3, 10 stone 4 and BMI of 25.5 so slightly overweight yet still a comfortable size ten. I'm certainly not what I'd describe as overweight but NHS clearly does. I do have massive boobs however which maybe weigh me down more.

Typical day is

Breakie:
One slice of toast with butter or peanut butter or jam OR porridge made with milk OR weetabix with banana
Numerous cups of tea with milk

Lunch:
Sandwich with ham/chicken/coleslaw/tuna etc OR Greek salad/soup with pitta OR scotch pie/sausage roll once a week

Tea:
Meat/fish veg and a carb- usually rice/cous cous/potatoes about 4 times a week
Once we will have shop bought or homemade pizza
Once a pasta dish
Once a takeaway

Snacks vary but today I've had 3 Thornton's mini caramel shortcakes, a fudge bar and a pack of frazzles. I'm having a glass of wine tonight too.

I also snack healthier too though and this week have had carrots and hoummus, strawberries, nectarine, chopped cucumber, bananas, satsumas, smoothies etc

I also drink water throughout the day about a litre as well as tea!

Imapudding · 04/08/2018 20:31

Today I had:
Cheese and tomato toastie and late from costa.
Ham sandwich
Packet of crisps
Chicken Fajitas
Few strawberries

Generally eat what I want but then if I'm feeling a bit fat a cut down a bit but always say within a 1/2 stone range.

stopgap · 04/08/2018 20:38

Not sure of BMI, but I’m 5’7.5, weigh 9 stone, and am 17 percent body fat. I work out at the gym five times a week, and am 41.

I don’t eat breakfast, just drink a kombucha.

For lunch I have tuna and avocado on gluten-free nut bread, plus a side salad; or grilled salmon with greens, avocado and sweet potato. I have two pieces of dark chocolate.

Mid afternoon I have a bowl of berries. Sometimes I’ll have a yoghurt as well.

For dinner I might have fish, vegetables and noodles, or spicy chicken and cauliflower rice, or a homemade Thai curry.

I pretty much never eat junk food. If I have chocolate, it’s raw cacao; if I have a burger, it’s organic and what not.

I drink water throughout the day, herbal tea in winter, and like a couple of straight-up tequilas on a Saturday night.

Verbena87 · 04/08/2018 20:46

Do you generally eat well but indulge sparingly? yep, exactly this! Do tend to cook from fresh and avoid processed food/low fat stuff as much as possible, but really your sentence nails it. Plenty of time on your feet/moving your body helps too, I think.

My BMI is 19. I’m breastfeeding so eating extra. Today I ate...

Breakfast: Small croissant with homemade marmalade, banana, coffee with whole milk. (Would normally have muesli, yoghurt and fruit but was staying with friends so pastries for a treat)

Mid morning: 2 pyclets with yoghurt and raspberries, latte

Lunch: slice of toast, 2 scrambled eggs, handful of cherry tomatoes, apple

Mid afternoon: herbal tea, Portuguese custard tart

Late afternoon: small glass of wine and packet of scampi fries in the pub

Dinner: aubergine gratin, boiled new potatoes, steamed chard.

I'm at the higher end of normal (but not completely comfortable, I could do with being around a stone lighter to be completely happy, but I'm still within the 'normal' range). I'm not as active as I'd like either and have settled into some bad habits over the last year or so. I've also noticed that the closer to 40 I get, the harder it is to lose/maintain weight. I've got 3 kids who are 10.
Breakfast - huge cup of tea and either bran flakes with semi skimmed, fruit and yoghurt (apple, handful of grapes, handful of strawberries) or 2 slices of whole meal toast with butter and strawberry jam.
Snack would be a banana.
Lunch - 2 eggs scrambled with semi skimmed milk, some ham and baked beans.
Dinner: usually home cooked, chilli, curry, fajitas, pasta and sauce, etc. Usually have takeaway (Indian) once a week, but will be extra 'good' during the day (no sweets or chocolate, biscuits, etc). I usually have a small treat once the kids are in bed - a chocolate biscuit or bar of chocolate, for example.
I generally tend to follow the slimming world principles of low fat, low sugar, highish protein, as I find this 'works' for me - however, it doesn't work for my OH.
I usually have a couple of glasses of wine on a Friday and Saturday night (open a bottle of a Friday, finish it on Saturday).
If I need to lose a bit of weight I do need to be really strict with myself, this last year has been a bit unusual though and I haven't been able to eat or exercise as I usually do which has resulted in me putting on a fair bit of weight which I'm struggling to lose (because of other circumstances which are leading to me comfort eating - I will pull myself together soon and sort myself out though).

MrsSteptoe · 04/08/2018 20:52

I'm a normal weight, and I'm 55. I'm very vain, and I maintain a reasonably slim shape (though I'm absolutely not the twig I used to be) by having a bowl of soup and a couple of slices of packaged sliced meat (ham or turkey) for a lot of meals. I will also have a small yogurt or apple. I try to have protein at all meals (cheddar, egg, or meat) and I avoid most baked goods and pasta. I will usually have something sweet a couple of times a week (a slice of cake or a chocolate bar, for example), not more. It helps considerably that I don't drink alcohol or sugary drinks - the only drink with any calories that I drink is coffee (milk).

I am also very careful to visualise quantities and try to reconcile the amount of food on my plate to the size of my stomach. It's surprising how many people may eat a perfectly healthy looking salad, but they simply eat too much of it. I'm also careful to leave some food on my plate if I realise I've eaten too much.

It sounds like all this is very obsessive and self-absorbed, but it's all just habit by this point, and in general I neither think about nor speak about food (unless someone asks!).

Roughly, I would say that my calorie intake is probably around the 1200 to 1400 mark a day most days, but I spend a lot of time sitting.

Verbena87 · 04/08/2018 20:55

@oncetwicethrice I feel your pain re exercise. I’m a fell runner (half marathon distance for preference) but first baby’s left me with pelvic organ prolapse and currently can’t even manage 10 minutes running without my bladder attempting to exit my body.

Hope you’re on the mend whatever’s keeping you on the couch. Sending unmumsnetty hugs.

weallneedcounselling · 04/08/2018 21:03

I am 35, 9.3 and do 3 gym classes a week and walk dog daily.

Breakfast is natural yoghurt and a few frozen berries.

Lunch is either chicken/ fish with salad and cous cous or sardines on whole meal toast. Always have blueberries and another Portion of fruit, maybe pineapple afterwards.

Dinner is usually something like fish cakes with Lots of veg and jacket or new potatoes. Or veggie chilli or salmon. Will very rarely eat red meat.

If I want a treat after dinner I’ll have another yoghurt or a bit of cheese.

My portion sizes are pretty big but I try not to snack much. If I have a packet of biscuits or crisps in I am greedy and will demolish them so just do not buy them!

On a Saturday I eat what I like and alcohol only if I go out.

I love these threads and find it interesting to read about what people eat in a day.

meow1989 · 04/08/2018 21:04

These threads always make me feel terrible about my diet Blush
I had DS just over 6 weeks ago and am back to normal size - size 6-8 on top depending on of item will stretch over boobs and 8-10 on bottom, bit of a mum tum obviously which I don't love but realistically won't do much about as I don't excessive Blush not breastfeeding but did for first 11 days.

Today I've had:
3 cups of tea (full fat milk, sugar)
Coffee (as above)
Breakfast- two poached eggs, toast and butter, bacon and cherry tomatoes
Snack- ginger bread man
Lunch - avocado on sour dough with halloumi, a smoothie
Dinner- two chicken breasts and rice
Plus lots of sweets picked at.

That's actually quite a good day as there's 3 of my 5 a day which doesn't happen every day if I'm honest. I'm a naturally carby person who loves cheese and dairy. I think metabolism has quite a lot to do with things too.

Moody123 · 04/08/2018 21:07

Breakfast: 2 slices white toast - loads of noodles
Snack: red bull
Lunch: instant noodles (at my desk)
Snack: crisps and chocolate bar
Dinner: lasagne, garlic bread
Tea glass of wine, magnum

That was what yesterday looked like
Today I had a bbq and I lost track of how many crisps I ate ...

I eat like the above till I tip over 9 stone, then go abit healthier till I go under it and repeat

I used to be 7 stone 10 before I had a baby.

And i work out once a week (and chase a toddler round)

SweetheartNeckline · 04/08/2018 21:07

My BMI is about 23. I have a brioche or pain au chocolate and a cup of tea for breakfast. Usually cake or a Magnum around 10am (I have toddlers and host a lot of playdates). If I have had a large snack I'll just have one piece of toast and an apple for lunch - if not then 2 pieces of toast, an apple or banana and a 2 finger kit kat.

For tea it's usually a family meal like pasta bake or chilli. I do think our portions are on the smaller side or maybe I bulk out with veg - 250g of mince would do 4 adult and 4 preschooler portions of spag bol / chilli. Nectarine / strawberries for pud. We have a snack about 9.30pm - usually unhealthy, but a multi pack snickers so slightly smaller than normal bars would be usual. I drink about 6 cups of tea / squash a day.

We do have pizza and / or takeaway at the weekend and I'd never say no to an ice cream on holiday or dessert at a restaurant.

I do walk 8000 - 12000 steps every day.

Ethylred · 04/08/2018 21:18

Don't eat garbage. Ever.
That means no chips/pies/cake/biscuits/pizza/sausages/hamburgers/fried food/you get the point.
Ever.

bsbabas · 04/08/2018 21:24

No idea what I weight don't care life's way too short I'd rather find a flattering dress than miss out on dinner with my partner. I'm a size 14/16 so I'm not massive don't look pudgy good enough for me

Greyhorses · 04/08/2018 21:27

I’m a normal person however I have noticed that my portion sizes are a lot smaller than most peoples.

I also do on average 16-20k steps per day just going about my daily activities and going by friends/family on Fitbit most people do less than 10 Confused

Neverender · 04/08/2018 21:28

I eat when I am hungry and I don't when I'm not. Today I had a toasted ham and cheese sandwich with a fried egg on top for lunch. Then had a Chinese (half a chicken fried rice and some seaweed) for dinner. No snacks.

That's my worst day for about 2 months. I eat salads. Loads of chicken. I cook from scratch.

lljkk · 04/08/2018 21:30

Lots of processed & junk food, tbh. Also lots of F+Veg & exercise. Middle aged & BMI ~21.
Today:
mayo+mustard on bagel that threatened to go mouldy
buckets of tea with FF milk & cream
blueberries, WM muffin with cream cheese, lots of Nutella, banana
2 fig rolls
Can of baked beans with added kidney beans & salsa
Big piece bacon with lots steamed veg + some boiled potatoes

MrsJBaptiste · 04/08/2018 21:31

I'm slim and eat a pretty much lower carb diet but definitely have the odd treat and have wine a couple of times a week. I'm now at a weight I'm happy with and don't want to lose anymore so this keeps it balanced.

However I exercise a lot. Heavy cardio and weights, 4-5 times a week, 1.5 hours a time.

Mindchilder · 04/08/2018 21:31

I have a BMI of 22 or 23.
Today I had a crumpet with peanut butter for breakfast.
Cooked breakfast (small one with extra mushrooms and tomato, left the toast) at Morrisons cafe for brunch.
Piece of cheese and an apple mid afternoon
Couscous, half a mini quiche, half a snack pork pie, hummus and Greek salad for dinner.
Two glasses of wine and a handful of flying saucer sweets right now.

I usually eat better in the week - oats for breakfast, soup/salad/jacket potato for lunch, normal dinner eg spag bol, curry.

Neverender · 04/08/2018 21:32

Oh, and I work out 4-5 times a week and do yoga once a week, as well as a bit of walking.

Thesearepearls · 04/08/2018 21:33

i tend nowadays to eat only one meal a day. I am active - walk the dog every day, do around 10k steps and go to the gym three times a week. BMI is well within normal range but my build is slender so I should be at the bottom end of BMI. I have a tummy that I don't much like and am a size 14.

If I eat two meals I gain weight. It is the downside of being over 50. It's much easier when you are younger.

cromwell44 · 04/08/2018 21:33

Height 5"3', weight 91/2 stone. Today I ate:
Breakfast banana about 11 o'clock, after dog walk/jog
Vegetable samosa about 2pm
2 oranges and some mini popadoms as snack
Dinner - chicken fajitas - one wrap, sometimes I'll have 2.
working wk is usually:
B: banana + other fruit or slice of toast with peanut butter
L: tuna sandwhich or salad plus bag of popcorn
Far too many snacks at work - fruit, go ahead biscuits, cake, all sorts.
D: prawn linguine, fajitas, sausages, steak salmon - the usual family meals.
I try to keep my portion size under control but will usually have some sort of snack in the evening Plus a glass of wine most nights.
I lost nearly two stone a few years ago and struggle to never go back to being overweight.
I suppose the depressing trick, for those who don't naturally have small appetites, is to be vigilant about the amount you eat overall.

friendlyflicka · 04/08/2018 21:34

I am slim. Have to work at it more now post menopause. But I am not a healthy eater. I just find that if I pig out, then I will automatically cut back the next day. I am also quite happy to starve and don't follow 3 meals a day routine.

friendlyflicka · 04/08/2018 21:35

@thesearepearls - agree. Over 50 is a real eye opener in terms of weight!

cromwell44 · 04/08/2018 21:36

Sorry for assume post Blush.
I also dog walk, do yoga and run infrequently. Sorry, really don't take to exercise on any serious, regular level.
