Middle lane hoggers - MOVE THE FUCK OVER!!!

StrongerThanIThought76 · 03/08/2018 12:25

Just that.

Travelled 15 miles on the M1 this morning and for many of those miles NOT A SINGLE VEHICLE in the inside lane!

I'm not a road hog (I drive a small banger) but for fucks sake pootling along at 65mph in a presumably capable car/van in the middle lane with nothing to your left and MILES of traffic behind you is selfish and plain ignorant at best, dangerous at worst.

Raaaaaarrrrrr!!!!!

YABU. They might fall off the motorway if they go too near the edge. Do you want that to happen OP?

poorbuthappy · 03/08/2018 12:31

YANBU!!!!
I laugh at them now because it was no good for my blood pressure to get annoyed with them....
I remember a few years ago a thread on here about middle lane hoggers and someone actually posted that the most dangerous thing to do on a motorway is to change lanes, and they had been advised to stay in the same lane for the whole time...Shock

StrongerThanIThought76 · 03/08/2018 12:32

Quite frankly yes I'd like that to happen to some of the numpties I saw this morning.

Does that make me a Bad Person?

YABU they would have to learn to work out other cars speed/distance then change lanes before and after junctions.

LeroyJenkins · 03/08/2018 12:33

someone actually posted that the most dangerous thing to do on a motorway is to change lanes, and they had been advised to stay in the same lane for the whole time.

fucking hell!! and this person i guess was allowed to drive!!!!

StrongerThanIThought76 · 03/08/2018 12:33

Bluebug I can't quite work out if you're being serious or not....

OP posts:
BlueBug45 · 03/08/2018 12:34

@poorbuthappy seriously!?!

I guess when a rather large HGV is signalling to move into the lane they are in they don't worry that it may crush them.

BlueBug45 · 03/08/2018 12:36

@StrongerThanIThought76 I'm not being serious.

glintandglide · 03/08/2018 12:38

Must be a totally difference section to the 15 miles of the M1 I use every day, where this rarely happens. Chill OP, maybe motorways aren’t for you.

SlartiAardvark · 03/08/2018 12:38

They'll be along soon....

"But I'll be passing that truck in 10 minutes time"
"It's dangerous to keep changing lanes"
"I've only been driving for xxx and am not confident"
"My speedo says xx and that's the limit so YABU to want to go past me"

You can't make it up half the time.....

SlartiAardvark · 03/08/2018 12:39

Must be a totally difference section to the 15 miles of the M1

Given that it's 193 miles long, the odds are quite high........ Hmm

SlartiAardvark · 03/08/2018 12:40

Ooh, nicely reminded BTW -

"You must be an angry driver if it annoys you, it's your fault"

Wink
Ginorchoc · 03/08/2018 12:41

I’m with you! Bloody hate it!

glintandglide · 03/08/2018 12:43

Indeed, I’m well aware of how long the M1. interesting how extreme the behaviour always seems when someone starts ranting about it though isn’t it? A completely empty inside lane (not even a lorry!) and everyone queues for miles behind a middle lane hogger. Every single day. Amazing.

keepingbees · 03/08/2018 12:45

Yanbu. Especially annoying when you need to be in the (empty) slow lane when approaching your junction and have to try not to undertake all the idiots pootling in the other lanes.

InMemoryOfSleep · 03/08/2018 12:49

@keepingbees I’m never quite sure what to do in that situation - if the middle lane is doing under 70, are you ok to pass them on the inside lane? Not undertaking as such, just that your lane is moving faster?!

ToothTrauma · 03/08/2018 12:51

Yeah my DM does this. Gives me the rage.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 03/08/2018 12:57

Glint I had this yesterday on the M62 between J24 & J23.

Mid-evening so rush hour had died down and traffic was flowing freely. Coming along the section by the little house on the prarie and every vehicle in front for as far as I could see, was in the middle and outside lanes - and yes, that included the HGVs! No apparent reason as the inside lane was completely empty and roadworthy. It made overtaking a bloody pain though, because I had to go round via the outside lane just to get past a load of idiots pootling along in the middle and refusing to move over.

MrsMozart · 03/08/2018 12:57

Drives me barking too.

I do a lot of motorway miles and see this a lot.

I thought there was meant to be a crack down on such behaviours.

lakehouse · 03/08/2018 12:58

That's the problem causing congestion, poor lane discipline. The motorways would move much more freely and safely if everyone drove to the left and use the other lanes for overtaking. Picking a lane and driving in it causes accidents and severe delays for everyone.

Moussemoose · 03/08/2018 12:59

In the US you can undertake. It's bloody brilliant.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 03/08/2018 12:59

Memory no you are not supposed to undertake as it is very dangerous. The only time it is permissible to pass traffic on the inside on a motorway is in a jam with standing traffic if one lane moves faster than another, or if you are on a slip road specifically marked for a junction exit - an example would be on a smart motorway where hard shoulder running is in operation and a gantry sign says that the hardshoulder is for JXX traffic only.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 03/08/2018 13:00

I have had enough of wankers, who when driving, use their head lights when they are behind me to flash me in the vain hope that the flashing of their lights will control my steering wheel for their convenience on the motorway/dual carriageway. I'm driving at 70mph, (and so are you) end of story.

To drivers who do this may I suggest: Overtake me in the far right hand lane and stop driving like a cunt. Your vehicle is not a battering ram even if you drive it like you think it is.

If you wish to undertake me by manoeuvring your vehicle into the left of three lanes then moving in front of me in the centre lane well, I hope that made you feel better.

What's up, is the outside lane at 70mph just for big boys who can actually drive ?

BarbarianMum · 03/08/2018 13:01

Wow which stretch of the m1 was this and what time? I've never been on it when you could drive for 10 min without there being beaucoup lorries in the inside lane.

Firesuit · 03/08/2018 13:02

I would have been somewhat annoyed as well, but...

If they were in the middle lane then presumably there was another lane the potential over-takers could have used?

And if the left lane was empty, presumably the whole queue behind the hogger were in the wrong lane as well? (I find it difficult to believe the left lane was empty, where were all the speed-limited trucks?)

If I came onto the motorway and the middle lane was full and the left lane empty, I think I would just stay in the left lane and pass every one. (To preempt, I disagree that this is either dangerous or illegal.) This is mostly hypothetical, in real life I'm fairly sure I'd be in the back of a truck in less than a minute, so I'd be getting out of the left lane, before the truck forced me to slow down, making changing lanes harder.
