Middle lane hoggers - MOVE THE FUCK OVER!!!

StrongerThanIThought76 · 03/08/2018 12:25

Just that.

Travelled 15 miles on the M1 this morning and for many of those miles NOT A SINGLE VEHICLE in the inside lane!

I'm not a road hog (I drive a small banger) but for fucks sake pootling along at 65mph in a presumably capable car/van in the middle lane with nothing to your left and MILES of traffic behind you is selfish and plain ignorant at best, dangerous at worst.

Raaaaaarrrrrr!!!!!

OP posts:
SouthWestmom · 03/08/2018 13:04

I just drive in the left lane and pass them now. If I'm doing 70 and aware I think that's safer than keeping on overtaking MRHs.

Unhomme · 03/08/2018 13:05

Have just driven all the way from Calais to the south of France and lane discipline is so much better over here. Almost every vehicle pulls in after overtaking...except noticeably the British cars...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/08/2018 13:05

One bit of the M25 I go on regularly has so many potholes on the left lane that you'd either shred your tyres or be swerving about like an idiot............but its 4 lane so gives slightly more space for anyone wanted to overtake Hmm

KinkyAfro · 03/08/2018 13:06

And if the left lane was empty, presumably the whole queue behind the hogger were in the wrong lane as well?

Yes, that's what the OP said, hence the point of her original post. Obviously if you find it hard to believe then the OP must be lying

AuntieFesterAdams · 03/08/2018 13:06

Driving in Australia, undertaking is allowed. You still get middle lane hoggers, but just pass them on either side.

Bliss

happypoobum · 03/08/2018 13:07

I wouldn't get so het up about this - is there something else bothering you OP?

Surely you just overtake them? Confused

Blobby10 · 03/08/2018 13:07

The worst motorways for this type of driving are the 4 lane ones - for some reason, the majority of motorists seem incapable of using lane 1 so drive in lane 2. Now this could partly be because the 4 lane motorways are still new(ish) and they do have a tendency for the inside lane to disappear into nowhere, or even that said motorists are stuck in the past and believe its the hard shoulder but ffs they are well signposted!

CocoaGin70 · 03/08/2018 13:07

We drove back from Gatwick to Gloucestershire along the M25 and M4 last winter.... was around 1.30am, barely any cars on the road at all yet the ones that were were all in the middle lane Shock. I can't tell you how tired I got of having to move lanes all the time to go around them. And annoyingly I would have been in the wrong to have stayed in the first lane! DH felt that some hand gestures were in order from the passenger seat to help them see the error of their ways Grin.

Sirzy · 03/08/2018 13:08

Drives me mad, if I can come out behind you overtake you and then move back to the inside lane then you are in the wrong lane!

I don’t undertake because I know it’s illegal but sometimes it’s so tempting!

Figlessfig · 03/08/2018 13:08

I spent the best years of my life on the bloody M6, with people in bloody Ford Kas sitting in the middle lane of the (practically empty) road. Drove me bananas. I’d be in the inside lane, and have to keep swooping across all 3 lanes and back to get past the fuckers.
IVE GOT A MEETING TO GET TO. READ THE BLOODY HIGHWAY CODE!

I don’t undertake because I know it’s illegal

Good news! It's not.

It's one of the things the Highway Code says 'do not' do - but anything phrased that way is advisory only.

Anything phrased 'must not' is illegal.

SlartiAardvark · 03/08/2018 13:15

To drivers who do this may I suggest: Overtake me in the far right hand lane and stop driving like a cunt. Your vehicle is not a battering ram even if you drive it like you think it is.

I'd suggest that if you're in the middle lane & the inside lane is empty that you need to fucking well move over - it doesn't matter what speed you're going.

Lane hogging is just as dangerous.

You can do your nails just as easily in the inside lane you know....

BonnieF · 03/08/2018 13:15

It’s absolutely infuriating. So many clueless numpties clogging up the roads because they don’t understand basic lane discipline.

In my experience, the four-lane sections are even worse than the 3 lane sections, with two inside lanes empty of traffic other than trucks and the middle-lane idiots clogging lane 3.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 03/08/2018 13:16

Kinky Grin

It pisses me right off because I do 15k miles a year and the amount of time I spend on the road makes me much less tolerant of piss poor driving. It causes unnecessary congestion when people are having to queue up in the outside lane to get past a middle lane hogger.

It is also frustrating because the argument of only being able to drive in the middle lane is complete nonsense given that they clearly plan to leave the motorway - which will involve changing lanes...

Firesuit · 03/08/2018 13:16

Yes, that's what the OP said

My interpretation was that she was only complaining about one car at the front that was causing the queue.

I don't think she lying, I think she hasn't accurately relayed all the facts. It makes no sense for their to be a miles long stream of cars in the middle lane with no vehicles in the left or right lanes.

loobyloo1234 · 03/08/2018 13:17

YANBU - I will never get my head around people that decide it is their right to take that lane up when the slow lane is right there empty for them

MissContrary · 03/08/2018 13:17

Ya SO nbu.

It infuriates me when the inside lane is empty, why, just why????
It infuriates me when I have to then move from the inside to the outside lane to overtake them.
Then the outside lane gets clogged up with everyone trying to overtake them and slows everyone down.

This post will create an influx of people who will say it's fine to undertake them.....

Shenanagins · 03/08/2018 13:18

Really annoys me. So often I’ve been happily doing 70 in the inside lane only to have to get over to the outside lane to overtake because these twats don’t know how to drive properly.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/08/2018 13:21

Yanbu

Only time I have seen others getting flashed is when they are in the right hand lane ok they may be doing the maximum speed but it isn’t their place to control how fast others are driving

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/08/2018 13:22

And if you do not feel confident to drive fast and change lanes then you really shouldn’t be driving on a motorway

2Brieornot2Brie · 03/08/2018 13:23

I posted this on Weds on another post:

M3, yesterday. Junction 1 going towards M25 mid morning. Not a soul on the road. I'm doing 70 in left lane. Suddenly spot a Fiesta in middle lane doing about 50. I have to pull over all the lanes to overtake and then move back into left lane.

I checked my mirror afterwards and they're still pootling down the middle lane. Why?

It drives me UP THE WALL

Tanith · 03/08/2018 13:23

It’s “should not” that’s advisory. “Do not” means what it says.
The police will pull you over for undertaking.

Eatmycheese · 03/08/2018 13:23

It’s dangerous and stupid. The middle lane is a dynamic lane.
And don’t get me started on the ones that start to speed up as you go past in the outside lane with a view to getting in before them then the inside lane.

If I had my way I would start fining people that drive for over a certain length of time at a fixed speed in the middle lane traffic incidents and other influencing factors aside

allertse · 03/08/2018 13:24

I was taught it's only undertaking if you pull out in front of them. And if you just happen to be travelling faster, that's fine.
