to ask when you started getting grey hairs?

I'm only 26, and I've noticed more than a couple silver strands in my hair.

It's depressing, I feel way too young for this. And it's only going to get worse :S

How old were you when you noticed this, and is there any way to stop this? Is it really caused by stress?

I’m 29, and I have at least 100 grey hairs if I let my hair go natural.

I now have to get my roots done every 8 weeks.

My mum was fully grey at 28, so I’m doing well in terms of genetics

Ivorbig1 · 02/08/2018 20:33

What colour is your hair? I think you notice it earlier the darker it is. Mine is very fair and I only noticed grey at about 38, even now I have to look for any. My friend younger than I says she has lots but has very dark hair.

starstarstarstar · 02/08/2018 20:34

It's dark brown

20 maybe. My great gran was fully grey by the age of 21. I'm now 28 & have a fair amount of grey hairs. I used to pluck them out but I'm really past caring anymore. I dye my hair as & when I can afford it but mainly because I like a colour change, not to cover greys. Embrace it! Some people spend loads on getting their hair dyed grey :)

OkMaybeNot · 02/08/2018 20:37

It isn't stress, it's genetics.

I read an interesting article the other day about how it's incredibly common to go grey in your twenties, but due to how the hair cosmetics industry has perpetuated the myth that going grey only happens to old people and if you want to look youthful you need non-grey hair, it's assumed to be unusual to be finding greys before you're 40 or 50.

I'm 27 and I have a single grey eyebrow hair. My mum went grey in her 30s so I'm expecting to find more soon. My friend is 23 and has thick silver sections already. Her mum had the same.

Ginnotgym · 02/08/2018 20:38

I was 19 Shock

Bluelady · 02/08/2018 20:39

I was 16 when I found my first grey hair.

OkMaybeNot · 02/08/2018 20:40

Also, I knew a girl in school who at the age of 14 was completely grey! That was unusual, but her whole family was the same. Genetics be crazy.

givemesteel · 02/08/2018 20:41

I'm 36 and don't have any but several friends had noticeable greys by late 20s.i don't think it's unusual, it's just most women dye their hair when they get greys.

Pengggwn · 02/08/2018 20:41

Getting my first now and I'm mid-thirties, but I have siblings who went grey (increasingly) in their twenties. I think it's pretty normal.

Mouthfulofquiz · 02/08/2018 20:41

I’m 36 - I found a whole massive streak of grey on the side of my head the other day!

KateMcD451 · 02/08/2018 20:42

I think I had greys coming through at about the same age as you OP, my I say think as I've been colouring my hair since I was a teen so it could have been earlier but I didn't notice. So annoying when my Mum didn't get greys until her early 50s but I try not to let my roots get too noticeable. I wish I could just rock the grey hair but I think it would just age me unfortunately Sad

daisyinatree · 02/08/2018 20:43

46-47 I noticed my first grey hair. (So quite recently.)

Though I do know a few women who started getting a few at 34-35.

26 seems awfully young to start going grey.

NymanPerkins · 02/08/2018 20:45

Only really noticing significant grey hairs now, aged 55. I have red hair, though, which makes a difference I think.

mangowango · 02/08/2018 20:45

I'm 34 and have wirey grey hairs on the top of my head. I've also noticed lines on my forehead.

My38274thNameChange · 02/08/2018 20:46

28 and it caught me by surprise. Now at 32 I definitely need to dye my hair, the top and sides are full of grey.

My brother was balding by 24.

Budgiegirlbob · 02/08/2018 20:46

I’ve been lucky, I found my first grey hair last year at the age of 48. I get a few now, but I yank them out when I see them, as they are obvious as I have very dark brown/black hair.

However, my twin sister started to go grey about 20 years ago, and dyes her hair to cover them, so there’s no accounting for it really

GobblersKnob · 02/08/2018 20:46

I was about 14 when I first noticed a few. I found one on dd's hair when she was 2! She has several now at 10.

ifeelsoextraordinary · 02/08/2018 20:47

26 for my first grey hair...I was horrified. To be fair I’m 41 now and only about 5% grey so it’s been a slow burn.

arethereanyleftatall · 02/08/2018 20:48

None yet. I'm 43.

MonoClue · 02/08/2018 20:49

I was 19. But all my mum’s female relatives went grey early. We’ve all got a pure white streak by 30. It’s the only thing I’ve inherited from her side.
I’m early 50’s now and been almost white for the last 10 years.

BlindedByYourGrey · 02/08/2018 20:51
  1. I now 47 and stopped dyeing it dark brown. I thought there would be some brown when it grew down but nope ... I now have a full head of gloriously silver hair.

So glad to be done with dyeing it.

Annabelle4 · 02/08/2018 20:51

I think I was 30

woodhill · 02/08/2018 20:52

About 22 and dyed hair for years' . I'm in early 50sand thinking of letting it grow or just having highlights or quasi. It's probably white but because I never see it grow out. I keep following the growing grey gracefully thread on fb.

I wonder if the condition will improve?

PickAChew · 02/08/2018 20:55
  1. Dark brown hair. Over 30 years on, it's still mostly dark with about 25% added sparkle ✨✨
