to ask when you started getting grey hairs?

I'm only 26, and I've noticed more than a couple silver strands in my hair.

It's depressing, I feel way too young for this. And it's only going to get worse :S

How old were you when you noticed this, and is there any way to stop this? Is it really caused by stress?

First spotted during double maths one Thursday morning in 5th form (year 11?), so 15.

Violetparis · 02/08/2018 20:55

I was about 25, so was my sister. Presume it is genetics and I don't think it's that unusual as I have friends who were the same. Don't worry about it you're still young, I'm 47 now and grey roots are the least of my ageing concerns as they can soon be covered up with dye or coloured spray.

Lindalee3 · 02/08/2018 20:56

I know some people say you should celebrate grey hair, and embrace it and all that jazz, but hell will freeze over before I ever allow grey hairs to show. IMO it does age women terribly. I know that won't go down well with some, but it's true.

hungryhippie · 02/08/2018 20:56

Noticed my first few about 35. Im now 38 and have a few around either temple and through the back.
I gave up dyeing this year so I dont have to start covering them every few weeks.

woodhill · 02/08/2018 20:57

I think the dyed hair can be ageing too especially if it is too dark

risottogroupon · 02/08/2018 21:00

Found my first grey at 19.

I've been dyeing it for years, so I don't actually know how grey I am but I'd say pretty much all over as my roots are white. My mum found her first grey in her teens and was largely grey by mid 30s.

I definitely think it's genetic. DP has only a couple of greys and his parents (in their 70s) are still not fully grey, definitely a lot less grey than me!

Pilgit · 02/08/2018 21:01

My daughter is 9 and has a couple.... I think I was mid 20s when I first noticed mine. It adds to all the other naturally occurring colours in hair (but then we're both lucky enough to have hair that naturally highlights in the sun- so much so that when I was a kid my mum was told off by a teacher for having my hair died)

LisaSimpsonsbff · 02/08/2018 21:04

I remember finding a grey hair while at university, but I was probably around 26ish when I started to notice a few of them. I'm now 31 and plenty of my friends have some greys - it isn't at all unusual. It does seem to be more common among my brunette friends but I think that's mostly because they're much more likely to have natural hair - all the blonde women I know have at least highlights and often fully dyed hair, so they're less likely to know what their hair looks like left to its own devices. I suspect if some of them laid off the dye for a while they'd discover some grey hair they don't know about now!

8DaysAWeek · 02/08/2018 21:04

I've just turned 29 and first noticed grey hairs a few months ago. I couldn't believe it. I still cannot accept I'm old enough to have grey hairs!! I have dark brown hair too which doesn't help.

JustlikeDevon · 02/08/2018 21:09

I was 40. Still only a smattering 7 years later. My brother has none at 44.

Flickerfromview · 02/08/2018 21:11

53 - the odd one. My hair is really dark brown/black. I think we have a 'stray' gene from somewhere other than GB!😳 My dad is 75 and still has what I would describe as 'charcoal' coloured hair.

motortroll · 02/08/2018 21:12

I am 40. I have none. No one believes me as I dye my hair but I really do have none!! I am very unusual most of my friends had their first grey in their late 20s

motortroll · 02/08/2018 21:12

My hair is dark/chestnut brown btw!!

13Crows · 02/08/2018 21:13

13 years old. 46 now and probs 80% grey. It sucks.

LaDaronne · 02/08/2018 21:13

Forty-odd. DH barely has any in his mid-fifties.

Branleuse · 02/08/2018 21:14

i got my first at 19. My ds1 got his first at 15

Im 42 and Id be completely grey/white now if i didnt dye it. Planning on dying it forever

AlpacaLypse · 02/08/2018 21:18

On the morning of my fortieth birthday. Now 53 and actually it's not many more. What IS infuriating is the spikey chin hairs. They're now coming through grey/white and are fair less easy to spot and pluck than they were a year ago. (I have European skin)

Faster · 02/08/2018 21:19

Started going grey at 21, and now 33. Have stopped getting highlights for about 6 months and am embracing my natural hair colour.

I noticed first gray hair at 53 and now have a few around the temples.
My mother never really went grey so I suppose it's genetic.
I shall definitely be covering it up - it's so ageing!
I wonder if people are going grey younger because of diet and increasing stress?

BlueberryPud · 02/08/2018 21:22

Like a previous poster, I have dark red hair and noticed greys when I was about 49/50

chickacharlie · 02/08/2018 21:22

I'm 28 and have been getting more and more- I only notice them when I put my hair up in a ponytail but can pull out four or five at a time Sad

Talkingfrog · 02/08/2018 21:22

In my 20s. My dark brown hair is thick, and they come through as pale grey so stand out.
All my mums family have gone grey at the front first, but I didn't. Instead I ended up with natural highlights all over.

I have been colouring it for a while(to a colour as near as possible to my natural colour).

When it is due to be coloured my 7 year old tells me my hair is turning silver! with surprise in her voice as if it is a good thing.Smile
She can't quite grasp how it changes colour and the hairdresser changes it back. Confused

YouBoggleMyMind · 02/08/2018 21:24

Had a few over the last couple of years and I'm 30. I dye my hair to cover them.

Lynne1Cat · 02/08/2018 21:26

My natural colour was almost black, so when I began to go grey at 25, it was noticeable. I've dyed my hair since (I'm 59), and it's been black, blonde, auburn, brown, and I had streaks now and then. It's a plum colour now. My husband is 60, only began to get grey hairs last year. His hair is 90% dark, though.
