to ask when you started getting grey hairs?

I'm only 26, and I've noticed more than a couple silver strands in my hair.

It's depressing, I feel way too young for this. And it's only going to get worse :S

How old were you when you noticed this, and is there any way to stop this? Is it really caused by stress?

Around the time I had kids - so early/mid 30s. I’m 37 now and only I’ve noticed them* as they’re quite hidden but there are quite a few and I imagine will become visible to others soon.

*I asked my hairdresser whether I needed to start dying it and she said she hadn’t noticed them - no reason to suspect she was fibbing!

DangerousBeanz · 02/08/2018 21:31

My late teens, I developed a pure white stripe, like Lily Munster, right down the middle. I dyed it for years but I've given up now it's too much hassle.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 02/08/2018 21:32
  1. I blame my mum as she was the same.

I got the dye. Dyed it for the next many years. I'm now 44 and have just grown the dye out - I was expecting to be completely grey but it's still more brown than grey.

I quite like it. It's sort of silvery highlights.

Omgineedanamechange · 02/08/2018 21:32

Not got any yet, I’m 52. It’s definately genetics. My grandmother hair was jet black till the day she died aged 87.

Aroundtheworldandback · 02/08/2018 21:33

Early forties

Bigpizzalover · 02/08/2018 21:36

I’m 28 and I’ve been getting them since the start of the year around my temples so it’s only noticeable when I have my hair tied up. Which is nearly every day with 2 kids under 4 haha. I have mousy brown hair that I have highlighted blonde but you can still see them. My mum and aunty were grey in their early 20s and so was one of my cousins. My brother is 22 and has started getting a few. Damn genetics

19lottie82 · 02/08/2018 21:38

32...... I’m 36 now and have quite a few at the front of my head. I have mid brown hair naturally, but get highlights which seems to hide them (for the moment).

starsandstuff · 02/08/2018 21:41

I was 17. I let it grow out a few years ago. I have an AMA about this at the minute! shameless plug

Tisfortired · 02/08/2018 21:43

I'm 27, started noticing them about a year ago. I was down about it at first but I'm just embracing them. I have them most around my temples.

RoboJesus · 02/08/2018 21:44

2, it's a genetic thing in my family. It's just mostly white now

FrozenMargarita17 · 02/08/2018 21:47

29 right after I had my baby. I'm embracing them. I honestly do not care and I am FAR too lazy to dye it. And it'll end up worse if I do that anyway because I'd have roots. I'd rather just let it go grey and be happy with it!

mumeeee · 02/08/2018 21:47

I'm 61 and still haven't got any grey hairs. Dad was in his 60's before he started going grey so I must take after him

ChocAuVin · 02/08/2018 21:50

I’m 39 now and have been growing out my salt and pepper (with the help of several rounds of high and low lights) for 14 months. I love it, mostly! Such a relief to not be constantly battling the block-dye badger stripe.

It also encourages me to always wear a bit of slap, too, which in my mind is a good thing (the silver bits around my face look great with a swipe of red lipstick)

Jozxyqk · 02/08/2018 21:55

23 - it was literally right at the front. I suspect I probably had some more before that... mine are really shiny silver, so they stand out. I have used henna etc, but never permanent dye. Contemplating it as the increasing grey does not suit me.

CrunchieFriday · 02/08/2018 22:00

48 and found my first grey hair the other day. It was not a good day! Grin

butterry · 02/08/2018 22:01

I have had about 5 strands since 16, very noticeable wiry white ones as I have black hair. Always thought I would be all grey by 30 but 34 and haven’t noticed anymore yet!

PickAChew · 02/08/2018 22:59

Just been watching Brian Cox. My hair is about the same in colour and distribution. We're a similar age.

JurassicGirl · 02/08/2018 23:04

Only recently found 1 or 2 & I'm 37.

No intention of dealing with them, plucking/colouring etc yet but not ruling it out.

My DM didn't go grey until early 40's

ScattyCharly · 02/08/2018 23:05

40
However I do think that most people have some greys before then. We just unfortunately live in a society where it really takes bravery not to dye over the grey. For women anyway. Virtually everyone I know dyes their hair.

PuntCuffin · 02/08/2018 23:10

When I had kids. I have told them I get another one every time I have to tell them off. So far, DS8 still believes me Grin

DBro started losing his hair when he hit puberty. He was white blonde as a child, so never looked like he had hair in the first place. And then it all fell out by 16. Looking older has been great for his career though, as it was assumed he was older/more experienced.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 02/08/2018 23:13
  1. I didn't start dyeing it until I was 26 or so and stopped dyeing it at the end of last year when I was 52. The roots were showing after 3 weeks and that looked more ageing than it does now. I'm a soft white at the front and pepper and salt at the back. I might get some blonde highlights once the colour has finally grown out, another 4 months I reckon. It's in much better condition and I really like it.

I'm 66, and I have one or two grey hairs, and a little bit of grey fluff under my hair on my temples. It's genetic, my 93 year old mother is not fully grey!

Teensandfuture · 02/08/2018 23:21

At 37 ..around a year ago .I have 2 that I can see so far .its definitely genetics. My mum started to get noticeable grey hair after 45 so I imagine I'll be same.

Kintan · 02/08/2018 23:22

I’ve had a white streak since I was about 2, but was around 27 when I started noticing them elsewhere on my head..
