AIBU concerning family mocking accents

I'm rather upset and would like to know if AIBU or perhaps just hormonal. I'm on holiday with my British husband and British born/raised adult children. We're in another country but there are many Americans on holiday here too. I'm American myself. As I have lived in the UK a long time, my accent is softened, but still there. My family have what would be called a "posh" English accent.

My husband and one daughter are continually putting on fake, exaggerated American accents and mocking what they hear Americans saying. I have quietly asked my husband to stop this, saying its rude and people around us would be upset. He replied that he doesn't give a shit. All jokey.

Without going too much in depth, I'll simply say, I'm American. This bothers me. Causes me to feel upset not only by my perceiving their rudeness but also mocked myself (even though I don't have this particular southern states American accent).

AUBU to feel upset/hurt? Should I be more forceful in asking them to stop? I feel I'd be told AIBU and ruining their holiday.

Americans are fair game for piss taking simply for their gun laws 😂

SugarIsAmazing · 01/08/2018 13:19

We went on a coach trip with some Americans when we were on holiday, and no lie, they literally wanted to stop every five minutes for food.

TheThirdOfHerName · 01/08/2018 13:20

Their behaviour is immature, xenophobic and unpleasant. YANBU.

smokeybaconcrisps · 01/08/2018 13:21

😂😂 don't think men can help it my other half did it on holiday to when there was a family of Americans.

Piffle11 · 01/08/2018 13:23

You've told DH this you find it upsetting, he says he doesn't give a shit … he's a dick. He may think you're being overly sensitive, but to react the way he has is awful. I would have a word with DD too, maybe you will have more luck with her. Can you and other DC start doing vair posh British accents? Stooping to his level, I know. Ask him if he'd be happy about someone ripping the piss about how his family talk. Always amazes me when people think they can continue to behave in a way that upsets others purely because it's done in a 'jokey' way.

User667025 · 01/08/2018 13:27

sugarisamazing - not all Americans think that way. I certainly don't agree with those laws. It's not really a helpful comment in this situation, doesn't help me feel better in anyway but thank you for reading the thread.

Ignore previous poster! I'm sure they would have something to say if we followed their rules (idiots are fair game for piss taking)?! I'm not really sure what the answer is if you have already called him out on it?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/08/2018 13:29

Of course yanbu. If you were in Pakistan they would quite rightly so be accused of being racist by mocking someone living there by exaggerating their accent.

RideOn · 01/08/2018 13:30

Be more forceful to ask them to stop. It won't ruin their holiday at all if they have to stop mocking you and the Americans around them.

CloudPop · 01/08/2018 13:33

Shout at them if necessary. Their behaviour is rude and infantile and it needs to stop.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 01/08/2018 13:36

Rude rude rude, and insulting to you, his wife. Tell him to bloody well stop and tell your dd off.

pinkyredrose · 01/08/2018 13:39

men can't help it Americans are fair game Hmm

What is happening to this place.

OP you are not unreasonable. Your husband sounds like an immature dickhead. Telk him to shut the fuck up or you'll go off and do your own thing and leave them to it.

Duskqueen · 01/08/2018 13:40

What you should do is turn round to them and say, "it's a wonderful accent isn't it? Much better than your post accent." And see what he says. If he gets upset say you were only 'joking'.

AnExcellentUsername · 01/08/2018 13:42

Some right arseholes on this thread.

TwentyThousandWoks · 01/08/2018 13:46

Hmm, I would say I that I wouldn’t find it hurtful myself as I have met plenty of Americans in my travels who have mocked my British accent and not taken it personally! However, what I do find very unreasonable is that you find it offensive and have called your husband out on it and he continues to do it, that sucks, sorry OP Sad

CountArthursgroupie · 01/08/2018 13:46

It's racism, pure and simple. Yanbu.

Myotherusernameisbest · 01/08/2018 13:46

Start doing your best posh English accent OP. Tell them they are being 'Frightfully rude and you would very much like one to stop this nonsence immediately'

VodkaRevelation · 01/08/2018 13:49

dont think men can help it. ???

VodkaRevelation · 01/08/2018 13:51

It’s really rude OP. Your husband was really unkind to dismiss you when you told him how upsetting it was. It’s never ok to mock people for their accents or how they look.

MikeUniformMike · 01/08/2018 13:54

It is rude and xenophobic.

Deshasafraisy · 01/08/2018 13:55

Cringey awkward and rude. Yanbu

IceCreamFace · 01/08/2018 13:55

YANBU they're being very rude and immature.

bonitabonita · 01/08/2018 13:56

Would he do it if you were Indian or Jamaican? Why is it acceptable to mock an American?
