Telling SIL to not smoke before coming over

More of a WWYD. SIL is a smoker and myself and my husband aren't. I sent her a friendly message asking her to not smoke before coming over to visit DC. She seemed offended but obliged but my baby my rules right?

The smell of smoke gets in everything. My MIL smokes in the house and every time we visit, we go straight home, strip off, put the clothes in the washing and shower without either of us touching any fabric. If any of them from that house visit us, we febreze every single item of fabric they've touched the instant they leave. Really? You're having a laugh.

I would expect her to shower and change before coming over. It isn’t perfect, because her clothing is still coming from her home and likely picked up something just being in her closet, but I would make that concession for family.

I would decline to visit her home and when you meet at neutral locations, I would only let her hold the baby if she is showered and in fresh clothes.

@derxa Absolutely true. We're not having that stink on our things.

People can make whatever rules they like. And others can choose whether they want to play the game.

Going a little off-topic:
I was once invited to a dinner party and told to take my shoes off when I got there. I refused. I don't like other people imposing their values on me.
What next? I am asked to strip naked because they're committed naturists? Their house, their rules. They can keep it.

When happened next? Did they give in, or did you turn round and go home?
