Just had the following conversation on the phone with DP

DP- Hey, where are you?

Me - McDonalds

DP - By yourself?!?!?!?!?!

Me - Yes... why?

DP - Why would you not just go through the drive-thru?

Me - Errrrr because I wanted to sit in and eat it

DP - By yourself?!?!?!?!

Me - YES!!!!!!!

DP - That's so weird sitting eating by yourself. Weirdo.

Me Erm. Okay. Knob.

(We call each other names all the time, it's said with love and affection most of the time)

So I'm looking around at 75% of the people in there sitting eating alone and engrossed in their phones

AIBU to think sitting eating a McDonald's alone is a completely normal thing to do and he has issues for thinking it's weird?!?!

Totally normal. One of the Norwich ones has a table of two in a little alcove and I sit facing the wall 😂

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 20/07/2018 14:08

Yeah he’s weird. I go out for full 3 course lunches/dinners by myself! He’d think I was a complete whack job.

Theycouldhavechoseneve · 20/07/2018 14:08

I think he was just jealous he never got a Big Mac Smile

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/07/2018 14:18

I go for pub lunches by myself, which DM thinks is odd, so your DP might think so too. I had a brilliant day out last week - walk in the countryside, pub lunch and a swim in an outdoor pool.

I also in McDs alone too. I travel for work and sometimes get McDs for lunch, so usually have to go inside to use the toilet, so once I'm in there I might as well sit in and eat.

It then means I can put the rubbish in McDs bins (and most of them now have the recycling thing for the drinks cups) and I'm less likely to end up with a load of crumbs in the car or food all over me that I would if I was eating in the car.

Therefore, your DP is the weird one for going through the drive thru and presumably eating in the car.

NameChangeUni · 20/07/2018 14:22

I wouldn’t necessarily sit in McDonald’s and eat by myself (wouldn’t enjoy the atmosphere tbh, could find a better place to sit and eat) but I would definitely sit in Starbucks or costa by myself. I don’t think eating by yourself is weird, especially if you’re on your lunch break.

PitterPatterOfBigFeet · 20/07/2018 14:30

YANBU, I probably wouldn't take myself to a fancy restaurant without company (although I know some people do and good for them) but McDonalds? Why not?

SaltyPeanut · 20/07/2018 14:31

Does he perhaps think a "lady" needs an escort (preferably of the penis owning variety) if she wishes to eat inside an eating establishment or is he just miffed you didn't pick him up first and buy him food too.

He's a bit weird but I don't think it's in unforgivable territory.

Poodles1980 · 20/07/2018 14:31

I love a sly McDonald’s, have no problem sitting by myself in any restaurant and I would prefer go eat in rather than have my car stink of food

Shumpalumpa · 20/07/2018 14:32

I feel sorry for people who think like him. So insecure.

DoubleNegativePanda · 20/07/2018 14:34

I go out to eat by myself all the time, fast food or proper restaurant. I'm single by choice and a lot of the time I simply prefer my own company. Most days I'd choose a good book in front of me rather than a man across the table.

Mousefunky · 20/07/2018 14:35

YANBU. He probably thinks going to the cinema alone is weird too, I always used to do that and loved it.

DoubleNegativePanda · 20/07/2018 14:35

DD thought it was weird the first couple times I mentioned it but now she sees this habit as some sort of "strong independant woman" trait Grin

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 20/07/2018 14:36

I'd go there by myself. And wagamamas and anywhere else that isn't so formal. Faff about on my phone and read a book and complete peace and quiet to eat. It's a nice change!

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 20/07/2018 14:36

I dream of sitting in McDonalds by myself without bickering, moaning that they don’t want what they ordered or drinks being spilt cause someone insists on chugging the ice water. Or starting an unnecessary fight over nowt.

ConciseandNice · 20/07/2018 14:36

Eating alone is the bee’s knees and YANBU. He’s weird.

Nikephorus · 20/07/2018 14:36

Have to admit I'd rather sit in the car park in the car and eat but then I tend to think that's odd given that everyone else is sat indoors!

lottiegarbanzo · 20/07/2018 14:43

What would he do, sit in the car? Or not eat until he's home?

YANBU at all - Making use of a place designed for people to dine informally, to dine informally.

Stephisaur · 20/07/2018 14:45

I eat mine in the car if I'm alone Grin

Usually because I cba to go in though, I have no issues eating in on my own.

YANBU

PrincessPear · 20/07/2018 14:47

YANBU. But mine has said I’m weird because I’ll go to the cinema alone if it’s a film I want to watch and no one else does Hmm

Hamandcheesebaguette · 20/07/2018 14:50

Glad to know he's the weirdo.

I used to go to the cinema by myself when I was single and had days off during the week and he looked at me like my head had fallen off.

He doesn't even like going to the shop by himself though so he clearly is just a strange man.

I’ve eaten everywhere from McDonalds to 3 Michelin star restaurants alone, it doesn’t phase me.

What I actually find weird is people who go through the drive through and eat in their car in the car park!

Going to the cinema alone is perfectly logical, it’s not like you can talk to anyone there. DH goes alone sometimes to late screenings of his friends aren’t free and I’m on night shift.

PrincessPear · 20/07/2018 14:54

That’s what I said lmao!

problembottom · 20/07/2018 14:54

If he doesn’t have the confidence to eat in Macclesfield Ds on his own then he’s the exception to the norm not you!

RedSkyLastNight · 20/07/2018 14:55

Eating on your own .... not weird
Eating on your own in McDonalds (where you are generally surrounded by noisy children) .... weird
