Just had the following conversation on the phone with DP

DP- Hey, where are you?

Me - McDonalds

DP - By yourself?!?!?!?!?!

Me - Yes... why?

DP - Why would you not just go through the drive-thru?

Me - Errrrr because I wanted to sit in and eat it

DP - By yourself?!?!?!?!

Me - YES!!!!!!!

DP - That's so weird sitting eating by yourself. Weirdo.

Me Erm. Okay. Knob.

(We call each other names all the time, it's said with love and affection most of the time)

So I'm looking around at 75% of the people in there sitting eating alone and engrossed in their phones

AIBU to think sitting eating a McDonald's alone is a completely normal thing to do and he has issues for thinking it's weird?!?!

@InfiniteVariety - that sounds lovely! And yes that’s exactly it - if something means a lot to you then you don’t necessarily want to go with someone who might not feel the same about it, I didn’t want to feel the need to apologise or ‘explain’ why I loved it so much if a friend/DP didn’t enjoy it so much' I just wanted to sit in peace and enjoy. No reason why they wouldn’t - it was excellent, but it was kind of my thing.

I’ve also holidayed alone, though my ideal was when I’d go to visit friends/family abroad and then I could travel alone which I love, spend most of the day alone pottering/walking/ lunching etc and then have dinner with my hosts in the evening. I find it weird sometimes being in a relationship and not getting as much alone time, especially with someone who thinks everything from hanging the washing out to going to the bank is a joint activity. It’s lovely too of course, stops me going full hermit!

Years ago I went to the opera on my own and a man, also alone, came in and sat down in the seat next to me - we smiled and said hello to each other. The curtain went up and he started crying almost as soon as the music started and I think he cried all the way through. Then at the end he stood up, smiled, said goodbye and left. I have never forgotten this incident as it says something profound about the shared experience of audience companions who are in fact strangers to each other and it is something you are much more likely to miss out on if you are with a group of people rather than alone.
