To think it's weird that DP thinks this is weird?

Hamandcheesebaguette · 20/07/2018 14:06

Just had the following conversation on the phone with DP

DP- Hey, where are you?

Me - McDonalds

DP - By yourself?!?!?!?!?!

Me - Yes... why?

DP - Why would you not just go through the drive-thru?

Me - Errrrr because I wanted to sit in and eat it

DP - By yourself?!?!?!?!

Me - YES!!!!!!!

DP - That's so weird sitting eating by yourself. Weirdo.

Me Erm. Okay. Knob.

(We call each other names all the time, it's said with love and affection most of the time)

So I'm looking around at 75% of the people in there sitting eating alone and engrossed in their phones

AIBU to think sitting eating a McDonald's alone is a completely normal thing to do and he has issues for thinking it's weird?!?!

I used to go to McDonald's all the time alone when pregnant and my dh thought I was weird as hed never eat alone

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 20/07/2018 16:17

Sitting in your car eating alone is way weirder than sitting inside with tables and chairs… maybe he should branch out and try going to a coffee alone! I love it, find it very liberating.

amusedbush · 20/07/2018 16:20

I got to McDonald's by myself quite regularly which is why I'm so fat and it's not weird. There are always loads of people eating alone.

ElementalHalfLife · 20/07/2018 16:23

Nothing wrong with being in McD's alone - DH thinks your DH is weird for thinking it's weird. Mind you he's the kettle calling the pot black, he's the same about places I like to frequent alone, movies (he wouldn't want to see), concerts (he wouldn't want to see) and, one memorable time, a bookstore.

We live not far from SF and visit often but rarely stay there, this time we were on a road tour of events with one there. We reached the hotel early and had a few hours to kill before our event, DH chose to snooze them away but I said I was going out for a wander round the shops. I stumbled across this particular bookstore which is quite famous and I'd always wanted to visit yet somehow never had. Got a text a couple of hours later:

"where you at?"

"Citylights bookstore"

"why??"

"couldn't find the shoes I wanted anywhere else so thought I'd try here - whaddya mean 'why?'!!'"

DoubleNegativePanda · 20/07/2018 16:26

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea I love to go have a pint by myself as well. I either take a book, or if there's someone playing music I am strange enough to sit there and knit while I drink and listen!

trappedinsuburbia · 20/07/2018 16:29

It never occurred to me thats weird. I often used to pop in for a quick bite in the middle of a day if im out and about. Food courts as well, just grab some food and a table and thats you fed!

InfiniteVariety · 20/07/2018 16:30

AliasGrape I get it. Sometimes if there's something I'm really passionately interested in seeing at the theatre, I'd rather go alone than take someone else in case it doesn't mean as much to them as it does to me.... next week I'm seeing Mark Rylance, an actor I find absolutely captivating at the Globe. I'm going alone because I want to, not because I couldn't find anyone to go with (2 different friends asked me to go with them in fact, after I'd bought my ticket). I like to be left alone to read the programme and think about what I'm seeing rather than being obliged to chat to someone else.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 20/07/2018 16:31

Elemental going to a bookstore with someone would be weird, how would you browse? Confused

JellyBears · 20/07/2018 16:32

In London it’s very normal to eat by yourself. I often take a good book and eat out.

BevBrook · 20/07/2018 16:32

Of course it isn't weird. He is weird. Weirdo.

I often do lunch or cinema by myself, and sometimes gigs by myself, theatre by myself, glass of wine in a pub by myself. DH went on holiday by himself before we got together.

JellyBears · 20/07/2018 16:32

I’ll go to the cinema alone too it’s refreshing to have alone time.

Oysterbabe · 20/07/2018 16:34

Completely normal to eat alone. I'm another who is perfectly happy to go to the cinema alone too.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 20/07/2018 16:36

I would and have eaten in a restaurant by myself but I'd probably eat in the car at McDonald's. More out of laziness than anything else.

ButchyRestingFace · 20/07/2018 16:37

He doesn't even like going to the shop by himself though so he clearly is just a strange man.

Don't know about "strange" but he sounds painfully insecure and needy.

Go to the cinema on my own ✔
Go to restaurants for 3 course meals on my own ✔
Go on holiday on my own ✔

The only thing I probably wouldn't do alone is go to a bar. To me, going to a bar and having a drink is a very social activity and not something I'd do unless meeting someone there.

Wouldn't bat an eyelid at anyone else doing it thought. Smile

ElementalHalfLife · 20/07/2018 16:37

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks (I love your username) I often go with friends (even DH on occasion) to bookstores.I have one friend's DH who is my secondhand bookstore buddy when we go on road trips together...omigod I'm weird!!!

Moussemoose · 20/07/2018 16:40

I love to eat on my own but NEVER in MacDs.

I would always go drive thru. Always.

SkaPunkPrincess · 20/07/2018 16:42

drive thru if I'm alone, but then I'm a big fat fatty and have a large meal and nuggets AND extra chips and don't want the judjy looks. This way the drive thru thinks of bout two meals and I can drive off and scoff in private 😁

ImAGoofyGoober · 20/07/2018 16:42

He’s very strange. Why would you eat in a car when you can sit at a table?

bookmum08 · 20/07/2018 16:54

Maccyds, Burger King, Costa, supermarket cafe - on my own all the time.
I have a rare weekend to myself and am now wondering if I could do Pizza Hut all you can eat lunch time buffet on my own....

AudiQ2 · 20/07/2018 16:58

@TakeAChanseyOnMe Anxiety 😬

LighthouseSouth · 20/07/2018 17:07

@lottiegarbanzo

I love how you phrased that Grin

PandaPolarBear · 20/07/2018 17:17

I've sat in McDonalds on my own... there are usually plenty of other people on their own doing the same thing, it's not odd at all!

I do prefer to eat in the car though, then I can have my own music playing and don't have to deal with the groups of screeching teens that frequent my local McDonalds.

tapdancingmum · 20/07/2018 17:33

@Bookmum08 I don't want to disappoint you but check the buffett is on at the weekend. I took mine for a treat and it cost me a fortune as it was a weekend and not on Hmm

MsFrizzle · 20/07/2018 17:35

I prefer eating alone and going to the cinema alone tbh! It's okay with people, I just like to be on my own schedule and not feel rushed or like I'm rushing them.

MyBreadIsEggy · 20/07/2018 17:40

He’s weird Grin
I’d happily eat in McDonald’s or somewhere like that alone - sometimes needs must.
But I wouldn’t plan to go out for lunch by myself.
