Hi all this is not an AIBU it’s more of a wth I got a bike a few weeks ago and I have been getting out on it as much as I can and I am walking a lot as well. I’m trying to lose weight to make having a baby easier and the weight is going nowhere at all and it’s getting frustrating now i’m trying really hard to lose it and it’s not coming off it’s going on instead. Feeling like it’s all just a waste of time.

Have you equally re-adjusted what you are eating?

chipsandgin · 01/07/2018 12:42

Just adding cycling to your lifestyle isn't going to make you lose weight. It will make you fitter and you will burn a minimal amount of additional calories and gradually get a higher resting metabolic rate as well as other health benefits, but if your diet is what made you fat then you need to change that too.

Also the increased activity levels could make you hungrier or feel like you can justify additional calories then any calorie deficit you've created is wiped out. What is your diet like? Have you made any changes since you decided you wanted to lose weight?

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 12:44

Yes I have started having 3 meals a day the only thing I can think of is that most nights I get my tea after midnight because my partner works until late so I wait for him to come home because it’s me that cooks.

(I say this as both a former Personal Trainer and a current overweight person - so no judgement in that advice, sadly I know only too well 'why', but actually doing something about it is a different matter!)

steff13 · 01/07/2018 12:45

Isn't there a saying, weight is 80% what you eat and 20% what you do? I'd take a look at what you're eating.

jestbecause · 01/07/2018 12:46

I'm like you, I go on a diet and put on weight - SW was the worst!! I've now cut out carbs ALTOGETHER and lost nearly a stone in a month as well as doing exercise yoga. I know I will have to keep it up but it is working!

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 12:47

I have a couple of ceral bars in the morning lunch can normally be a sandwich at 5 because I don’t get hungry and then tea can be anywhere from midnight onwards because my partner works in a kitchen. I did tell him last that we need to eat at a better time because eating that late will put weight on me which just undoes all my hard work.

GreenTulips · 01/07/2018 12:49

Sounds like feast or famine so your body stores the calories

Try 3 spaced out meals and don't eat after 8 o'clock

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 12:49

Thank you everyone it’s just really getting me down i’m going on 4 mike bike rides and doing 2 mike walks and it’s just not making the slightest bit of difference. Maybe I will try cutting out carbs.

OP posts:
Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 12:50

Thank you greentulips I will try that because it’s a nightmare trying to plan a meal at midnight when my partner gets back. My eating has improved a lot I use to only eat 1 meal a day.

OP posts:
GreenTulips · 01/07/2018 12:51

Why not do a slow cooker meal
Or a salad and put his in the fridge

NeverTooOldForAnything · 01/07/2018 12:52

The time you eat food makes little difference overall, it is the amount of calories that matter.

Are you tracking what you eat OP? (on my fitness pal or similar)

Do you know how much you should eat? (if you don't, Google a TDEE calculator and use that as a starting point)

DuchyDuke · 01/07/2018 12:53

Weight loss is 90 percent diet and only 10 percent exercise

catsofa · 01/07/2018 12:53

Cycling really builds your leg muscles and muscle is heavier than fat, so maybe you're burning fat but your weight isn't changing because you're growing awesome muscly thighs?

MaMaMaMySharona · 01/07/2018 12:54

What do your meals usually consist of? Also I agree with above poster about not eating after 8pm, this worked wonders for me!

bobstersmum · 01/07/2018 12:55

Swap all your milk to skimmed, swap any bread you have to Danish bread, cut out sugar in tea and coffee, avoid sweet treats and convenience food. Have three pieces of fruit a day in between meals. Drink as much water as you can and green tea can be helpful too. And keep up the exercise it will pay off.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 12:56

Thank you green tulips I have a slow cooker so that’s a brilliant idea it. Would a meal plan help sick of meals being just whatever is in the freezer.

NeverTooIldForAnything I was always told eating really late was bad for you. No I don’t track what I eat and I have no idea how much I should be eating but I will check that out anything to get me on the right track.

Why do you have to eat when he gets back?

You need to choose an eating plan that is sustainable and stick to it. Personally I like LCHF as it has health benefits for me and I don’t get hungry in between meals. Coupled with intermittent fasting it’s a very nice way to lose weight.

But whatever you choose it needs to be structured, planned and prepared for properly. Exercise is fabulous for health and well-being and mood but losing weight is mostly down to diet.

flutteryleaves · 01/07/2018 12:57

agree with PP, it walk 12-15 miles on my 3 days off work/ never sit down and i'm putting on weight but im eating several cakes with coffee in one sitting and a whole freezer pizza with salad when i previously had half. im probably eating 800 extra calories per day so no wonder im up a dress size.

So with weight loss, in my experience, its mainly calorie restriction

track your route on mapometer and look at calories, i'd bet a 4 miles bike burns only 120 -150 calories which is one slice of buttered toast!

Merryoldgoat · 01/07/2018 12:57

Look at The Diet Doctor website if you want to try LCHF.

Larasshadow · 01/07/2018 12:59

Have you takes measurements? You may find you are losing inches and not weight.

Try logging your food in my fitness pal, it really is surprising how calories add up without really thinking.

SlipperyLizard · 01/07/2018 13:01

I agree with others - you need to look at how much you’re eating, the timing doesn’t matter.

A four mile bike ride won’t burn that many calories I’m afraid (unless it is up a steep hill!), and for an average woman a 2 mile walk burns 200 calories - which isn’t going to make a massive difference I weight loss.

I walk 4 miles every week day and run on top of that - I’m still at the top end of “normal” weight as I eat too much.

Keep an honest food diary (and weigh everything so it is accurate) then run it through myfitnesspal or similar to work out how many calories you’re eating. It will tell you how many calories to eat to lose weight.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 13:07

Thank you catsofa Grin

Thank you bobstersmum I will give that a try.

My style of cooking is things like making my own burgers and putting them on my George formen or cooking chicken and serving it with a plate piled high with veg because I love my veg my partner will just chuck something in the oven and no veg. My meals fill us up his meals leave me feeling hungry still.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 13:13

Thank everyone I’m going to look at all that and sit down with my partner and plan out our meals for a week sick of feeling like am doing all this stuff and getting nowhere with it. Maybe I should cook all of our meals to try and keep it all as healthy as possible otherwise before I know it I will be 30 stone and I don’t want that. I thought walking and bike riding would burn more calories than that that’s shocked me a bit. I just want to get to a bit more of a healthy weight to help with getting pregnant because I really feel like it’s my weight that’s stopping me from getting pregnant.

noblegiraffe · 01/07/2018 13:14

My DH went out for a bike ride last night, was out 20 minutes and came in sweating. His fitness app said he’d only burned 100 calories which is probably less than one of your cereal bars.

You might need to pick a different exercise or do much more of it.
