Hi all this is not an AIBU it’s more of a wth I got a bike a few weeks ago and I have been getting out on it as much as I can and I am walking a lot as well. I’m trying to lose weight to make having a baby easier and the weight is going nowhere at all and it’s getting frustrating now i’m trying really hard to lose it and it’s not coming off it’s going on instead. Feeling like it’s all just a waste of time.

OP a lot of the diet advice out there is rubbish. You need to be eating real whole foods. DO NOT eat things like reduced fat or reduced sugar or skimmed milk. Instead, eat the very best quality of food that you can buy, things like grass-fed butter, grass-fed beef, meat that doesn't contain antibiotics.

Don't buy packaged pre-made foods and do not eat cereal bars, these are full of rubbish, a waste of money and not healthy.

Eat with the seasons so you are buying fresh food at their peak and will also save money. To save money I will often buy frozen spinach and kale and frozen green beans, and then I just throw them into my breakfast egg scramble.

Don't be scared of eating natural fats, these are the things that will help to fill you up and they are good for you. Eat things like avocado, olive oil on salads, etc.

Fruit is great, but it also has a lot of natural sugar in it so don't fill up on fruit or eat a ton of it. I stick to a handful of berries if they are in season and I think of fruit as being dessert not a snack or a breakfast option.

Eating as many green veg as you want is totally fine.

My daily diets and fitness look like this:

5 am: Up for a workout, drink a big glass of warm water with lemon and then drink cool water throughout hour workout class.

7 am: get back home, more water and a cup of coffee with almond milk (I have the kind that isn't sweetened).

11 am breakfast: two scrambled eggs with kale, onions, tomatoes, courgette, pepper and half an avocado OR two eggs with fresh salad, parsley some goats cheese and a squeeze of lemon.

4 PM: about eight berries mixed with chopped nuts and cinnamon

5 PM: 2-mile walk while listening to a great podcast.

8 PM Dinner: grass-fed stake with a big helping of greens OR grass-fed minced beef scrambled with a lot of veg OR Wild salmon with greek salad, etc.

In the summer when it is still light out, I will often go for another walk after dinner.

No eating late in the night, it doesn't help with digestion.

My biggest advice is to eat as naturally as possible, stick to the outside aisle of the store where all the fresh vegetables and meat are. Your body is meant to be eating things in their natural form, so eating foods that are full of fake sugars and sweeteners or comes packed in boxes isn't good for you.

Try to incorporate movement into your life as much as possible. Can you take walks throughout the day? I also am a big believer in women lifting weights, it burns fat and gives you a strong frame (which you will need with kids and which becomes so important the older we get).

My suggestion would be weight lifting three times per week and taking a HIIT class, pilates, etc. three days per week. If taking classes isn't in your budget then youtube classes are great too. I am a big fan of Jillian Micheals 30-day shred. Bike riding is an excellent addition to the workout, it gets you out and moving and will be a great family activity to do with children later on.

You should also consider other self-care things you can do to help TTC. Are you taking a prenatal vit? How are your Vit D levels (so important for conceiving and health). I would cut out all alcohol too if you drink (saves money, calories and is better for your health).

Start doing things that make you feel good and healthy, getting a good nights sleep (not waiting up for your husband, he can take care of himself!), taking relaxing baths, listening to great podcasts and reading a great book. All of these things combined with eating a diet of natural foods and working out will make you feel really good about yourself. Think of these as a lifestyle, not a diet or something to do to get pregnant. Automating all of these things and making them a natural part of your life will keep your whole life healthy.

My Fitness Pal is brilliant, and it can also be quite an eye opener once you start properly calorie counting. Especially if you start weighing your portions, and realise that the packaging serving size is half what you'd normally eat...

That said, I did Weight Watchers years ago. I lost weight, but I was starving myself and throwing up after eating, just to lose a couple of pounds a week. It was a real, real struggle to lose weight, but I'd gain it so easily.

It wasn't until ten years later (by which point I'd overcome my eating disorders, but at the price of gaining five stone), that I had fertility investigations. Turned out that I had an underactive thyroid and PCOS tag team. I was put on medication, lost a stone in a month, then promptly got pregnant.

After having my baby, my weight continued dropping to two stone lighter than my pre-pregnancy level.

Eventually I plateaued. I was still overweight, but now the little one is a toddler I'm making a concerted effort with My Fitness Pal (but making sure I don't get obsessive about it). I still have weeks where I gain a pound, or stay the same, but I can usually see why (eg a party, cakes in the office, etc). I feel like with the mess I at least having a fighting chance now!

SocksRock · 01/07/2018 19:40

I started to address my health issues 18 months ago when I hit 17 stone. I cried when that happened. I'm now 12st12, but it's been genuinely hard work. I didn't follow any plans or groups - just less food, and all of it unprocessed. So lots of home cooking, no Jarred sauces with a crap load of sugar. I started off doing couch to 5k to start running, and now I run 10-15km at least 3 times a week. I feel for you, the starting is the hardest, and I gave up and restarted several times. But make little changes, keep up with them, and keep going. It will happen.

And your Mum is a cow, obvs.

EllJ · 01/07/2018 19:58

OP you've had lots of good advice here but I bet you're probably feeling incredibly overwhelmed!

Take some time and digest everything, but at the end of the day whatever you choose to do must work for you. Every single one of the diets mentioned have one thing in common, they work towards the person being in a calorie deficit which is the one and only key to losing weight.

Try to choose foods that you like and enjoy and Incorporate them into whatever method you choose (within reason of course) Depriving yourself will only result in binges which will hold you back longer term. Being entirely honest... you could lose weight by eating only 6 mars bars a day! Not that I would encourage that obviously Grinbut I cannot stress enough that there is no secret to losing weight... you just have to burn more calories than you eat.

I'm excited to here how you get on so please update us

I too am trying to lose weight to help ttc. There have been a lot of suggestions on here. My unexciting advice would be to just reduce your calorie intake and do some exercise. Weighing out food and logging everything on myfitness pal does work. You'll be so surprised.

I personally have been doing the 16:8 diet, where you eat sensibly in the 8 hours but don't eat for 16 hours. I've been surprised at how non horrible I've found it! I've lost about 8lb in a month so nearing a healthy weight now. I feel so much better about myself already. I haven't been doing any 'big' excercise, just going for walks when I can. I do think the main battle is a mental one. You have to be in the zone, and it sounds like you're there now. You can do it.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 21:51

Thank you Rosewater09 I will give that a try I was taking vitamins but i’ve stopped now I need to get back on them.

Well done Sockrock I hope I can lose that much I know my mil is a cow I could create a whole thread about her and her antics.

Thank you EIIJ I look at diets and just think I’m never going to stick to that I need something that doesn’t feel like a diet but will help me to lose the weight. I’m going to sit down tonight with my partner and work out a meal plan for the week that seems to be the best way to go about it. Think I will do fingers crossed it works for me.

Seven201 that MyFitnessPal is so great and so easy to use I still have calories left over that I don’t think I will use today it’s set me the target of losing 5lb which I don’t think I will struggle with I just need to change my eating habits a bit. Oh wow well done maybe I will give that a try anything is worth a shot.

I tried MFP and had the same issue. I switched to Loseit which seems much more reliable.

EllJ · 03/07/2018 12:48

How are you getting on OP?

Toughtips · 03/07/2018 12:58

You're either eating too much or too little. Download my fitness pal n log your intake. Then make adjustments.

Hi OP. I really feel for you and just wanted to second the 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet a pp mentioned.

It's not just for diabetics. It's hard at first but the weight will melt off you. I had 10 pounds off my first week. It helps get you off the diet merry go round, stops constant hunger and breaks your carb/sugar addiction. It gets your portions under control as your stomach shrinks and you just can't eat as much any more. You will feel so good about yourself.

All you need is the book and My Fitness Pal. Cheapest way I ever lost weight!

You're either eating too much or too little.

If you're overweight and not losing, you're eating too much.

Agree with whoever mentioned there being a generous sprinkling of terrible advice on this thread.

OP: Good luck with the weight loss.
It's unlikely you have a thyroid issue - if you have restless legs and acid reflux when in bed then it makes sense you're not sleeping well.
My Fitness Pal is probably your best bet at the moment - at the very least it is an honest guess at how much you're putting in your body. Take just about anything else anyone tells you about losing weight with a giant pinch of salt.

MeltAway · 03/07/2018 14:38

But which advice do you disagree with Dixie?

CornishMaid1 · 03/07/2018 17:58

I know how your feel as I am/have been there. I am a couple of inches taller and a couple of stone lighter, but I know where you are coming from.

Once you get the motivation it is so much easier and the fact you are already exercising more is great.

I would go with what a lot of the others have said - stick with whole foods and as long as you are eating healthy food portion control will come.

For some recipe ideas google 'I quit sugar recipes'. The original site closed down and it has been moved to '28 by Sam Wood', but there are a lot of recipes on the new website for inspiration and they are all healthy and whole foods.

I started on the '28' programme just over 3 weeks ago and love it - healthy eating and daily HIIT videos. From the daily workouts I feel stronger and fitter which is great and the food is tasty. Paying for a programme is not for everyone, but there are recipes online for inspiration and he has a youtube channel (SamWoodTV) which has workouts on it.

He is Australian and I think that adds to his charm and I am quite happy waking up to workout with him each morning! Never thought I would say that.

Now that you are on the path with exercise do not stop. It is frustrating at times, but you have to look at the bigger picture and you are doing this for your future self and future baby. I am on the journey so I can start IVF and if you keep the reason in mind it will keep you going.

I wish you lots of luck x
