Hi all this is not an AIBU it’s more of a wth I got a bike a few weeks ago and I have been getting out on it as much as I can and I am walking a lot as well. I’m trying to lose weight to make having a baby easier and the weight is going nowhere at all and it’s getting frustrating now i’m trying really hard to lose it and it’s not coming off it’s going on instead. Feeling like it’s all just a waste of time.

@SofieMonde lots of people (me included) like Slimming World it Weightwatchers as the weekly meetings can be very helpful and supportive. You can also meet people there in the same boat and develop friendships etc.

OP - if you wanted to try either SW or Weightwatchers many GP's will give you a 'prescription' for a free 12 weeks membership so you could see if it suits you before committing x

There's a lot of awful advice on this thread.

Eat less processed food and move more.

Albadross · 01/07/2018 15:11

Just FYI, there is no scientific consensus that eating in the morning kick starts your metabolism.

'Toning' is also a misnomer because all it means is stripping back some fat to reveal the muscle - if there's no muscle to reveal you'll just end up as a slimmer but out of shape person (it sucks but it's true). When you do resistance training the number of calories you burn is less during the exercise but it continues for longer because of Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). Unless you get your heart rate up significantly when you cycle it's not brilliant for fat loss on its own because there's not enough intensity.

If you want to increase your resting metabolism you need to increase the amount of lean muscle in your body (resistance training). Eating lean protein also takes more energy to digest so it's more about what you eat than when you eat it.

I bet once you know how much you should be eating and start tracking everything, you'll not only start to see why you haven't lost weight but you'll feel more in control. I use Lifesum app because it seems to find the most UK barcodes.

Good luck - focus on your health and ignore your MIL!

vladimiersPoutine I weigh 21 stone 7 and I don’t know how much I want to lose enough to make me feel better about myself.

Lovemusic33 thank you I will try losing it slowly that might be better for me in the long run.

OneForTheRoadThen I have tried slimming world about 4 years ago and it did work but I now can’t afford to go.

CantankouresCamel I use to do a very physical job where I was constantly running round and that helped to keep my weight down but since having to give up work because my ill health I have really piled on the weight which has made me feel worse.

OneForTheRoadThen I didn’t know the doctor could do that for you I will ask about that because I can’t afford to go thank you.

Thank you Albatros I’m going to get an app to track everything for me hopefully I will see a difference then. I have a step counter on my Iphone and seeing it hit 8000 steps makes me feel like I’ve done some good that day. Thank you I will be ignoring her unwanted comments from now on she doesn’t help in the slightest.

It would be good to get up earlier and go for a walk before it gets too hot. Don't understand why you need to stay up for your DP, if he works in a kitchen presumably he can cook for himself or eat at work?

Merryoldgoat · 01/07/2018 15:42

At that weight you will be seriously overeating. I know, that’s how much I weighed a few months ago.

I’m losing weight on a VLCD (doctor mandated owing to some health issues which need fast attention and improvement).

I’d honestly suggest looking into a LCHF diet as it will help with blood sugar levels and even out cravings.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 15:42

Thank you Pinkyredrose I will try doing that. I stay up so that I can see him because I don’t see very much of him he’s out the house for 12 hours a day so those few hours at night are our only chance to spend some time together.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 15:45

Thank you Merryoldgoat I will look in to that I know I need to do something drastic to sort out this weight it’s not healthy and I go through periods of just not eating at all which probably makes me pile on even more weight I’ve got in to a really bad habit of just not eating because I very rarely get hungry.

OP posts:
Merryoldgoat · 01/07/2018 15:50

It’s not a criticism - I know how easy it is to get there and how hard to dig your way out.

I’m just over 2st down and it’s a slog and I’m bored with it but I’ve got to try.

Good luck with whatever you decide to try.

Blobby10 · 01/07/2018 16:01

Shootfirst I cycle and at approx 15-16 mph average over between 20and 50 miles i usually burn around 30 calories per mile. So even if you are cycling really hard its unlikely you are burning more than 150 calories. Same as walking - you only really use around 70-80 calories a mile with a really brisk walk.

Obviously everyone is different but these might give you an idea of what you are burning. If you are then doing what I do and thinking to yourself -oh I've been for an x number of miles bike ride I can eat this mars bar then you will eat more than you burn and your weight will stay the saame

I recommed My Fitness Pal to track your food intake but please do weigh everything and dont just guess what you eat.

DaffoDeffo · 01/07/2018 16:01

yes I wouldn't underestimate the hard work

I nearly gave up several times in the first 3-4 weeks when I wasn't losing anything but I have persevered and I'm so pleased now

but as someone else further down the thread said, you have to see this as a COMPLETE change in lifestyle

you have to redo everything in your life - I am now much more active and eat far better. BUT I have to say, the temptation to go back and be lazy and couch bound is always there

I am also 45 and it took me far longer to lose weight this time than any other time. It gets harder and harder the older you get so you need to bear that in mind.

I would go to the GP too and get a blood test just to rule out any other factors but otherwise, calorie count and be more active and you will start losing weight

pinkyredrose · 01/07/2018 16:04

Oh I see, yes if that's the main time you see him I get it. It's all about different food choices then, lots more protein and cut out any processed or refined food. Avocados are amazing, in salads, smoothies, on rye bread with rocket and tomatoes, so much you can do with them, ditto eggs.

Clairetree1 · 01/07/2018 16:07

Muscle is NOT heavier than fat. One pound of muscle weights exactly the same as one pound of fat! Muscle is more dense than fat which is why you can lose inches through exercising but still weigh the same.

Thats a crazy thing to say, 1 lb of anything is 1 lb!

Muscle weighs more then fat per volume, so you could be getting thinner but not weighing less

How much do you weigh? sorry if you have already said

Groovee · 01/07/2018 16:09

I've lost 5 and a half stone. For breakfast on work days I either have porridge made with water then mixed with yoghurt and then add frozen fruit in. Or I like an omelette or scrambled egg with ham, spring onion and spinach.

Lunch is after work, so I tend to have a piece of fruit before I drive home because I am hungry. I sometimes have a salad, or pick up some sushi from Tesco with a bag of baby carrots and sugar snap peas. Other days I have soup or tuna on ryvita or broghies crackers with veg or fruit.

Dinner is a home cooked meal. Pasta/risotto/curry/stew/roast meat with lots of veggies.

I don't deprive myself but I needed to overhaul my eating to get healthier.

randomthoughts · 01/07/2018 16:35

Don’t let your size put you off swimming. At our local pool everyone is there. You won’t be the largest and even if you feel you are there will be people who have been in your position (and you wouldn’t even realise it) I went from 15 stone to below 11 through changing my relationship with food (my fitness pal) and swimming. You’d be amazed by how many calories you burn by swimming compared to other exercise, and if you enjoy it that’s a benefit.
It really is possible, you just the lightbulb moment, which it looks like you’ve had! Good luck you can definitely do it.

randomthoughts · 01/07/2018 16:35

And eggs are brilliant at filling you up!

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 17:00

Thank you everyone for your help and advice I have got the my fitness pal app and it’s great I know how many calories I’m allowed in a day and it’s so easy to just scan in what I’m going to eat and keep track of it all and my goal is to lose 5lbs by August which I think is very doable for me.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 17:02

Thank you randomthoughts that has made me feel better I will definetly take up swimming again.

Eat between 11am and 8pm only.

FizzyGreenWater · 01/07/2018 17:05

Big fat no to eatign at bloody 1am, your system must be all over the place.

There are loads of healthy meals you can make and he can reheat his when he gets in! Curries, chili, risotto, pasta things, salads ready and all he has to do is add baked potato, etc.

Get into a better routine with your final meal of the day no later than 6.

MrsMaryMooFace · 01/07/2018 18:16

When you say a big heap of veg with your chicken, what veg is it? If it's starchy it won't be helping?

bizmum1 · 01/07/2018 18:32

Two words OP. Slimming World.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 18:39

Thank you pinkyredrose I wish he did a different job with slightly better hours but it’s what he chose to do and I just have to suck it up unfortunately.

OP posts:
Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 18:43

FizzyGreenWater it probably is all up the wall with the way we eat which can’t be doing me any favours at all. Think am going to start letting him cook for himself when he gets in and I eat my meals at a better time.

MrsMaryMooFace I do things like carrots broccoli cabbage or a mixed bag of frozen veg we will sometimes have homemade mash.

bizmum1 I would like to go back to slimming world but I can’t afford to £5 every week.
