Hi all this is not an AIBU it’s more of a wth I got a bike a few weeks ago and I have been getting out on it as much as I can and I am walking a lot as well. I’m trying to lose weight to make having a baby easier and the weight is going nowhere at all and it’s getting frustrating now i’m trying really hard to lose it and it’s not coming off it’s going on instead. Feeling like it’s all just a waste of time.

You need to adjust your portion sizes and use smaller plates with a rim.

Also try mixed exercise rather than just cycling and expecting it to come off straight away. With the amount you need to lose, you will have to be a bit patient. Mixing your exercise regime will make it more fun, so swim, walk, cycle, weights etc.

viques · 01/07/2018 13:52

Why not change the emphasis of your eating? So you are not eating well to lose weight you are eating well to get your body in optimum condition to have a baby. Junk the cereal bars for a healthy breakfast, ditch the sandwich for a protein rich/ vegetable salad and make your evening meal a healthy meal that you eat at a reasonable time so your body has time to digest it properly before you sleep, food eaten later at night means your blood sugar is higher longer which is not good news. Keep on with the exercise and good luck.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 13:52

EIIJ I am really down at the minute I think it’s because I went to see my PIL and my MIL turned round and said I need to ride my bike more and lose weight I’m trying my best here but it won’t happen over night and comments like that just make me want to reach for the chocolate so now am really trying overhaul everything just to shut her up.

Dodie66 · 01/07/2018 13:53

You need to eat the larger meals earlier in the day when your body can burn them off. If you are having a big meal before bedtime that’s why you are putting on weight.
Have you heard the saying, breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. There was an article in the papers last year see here www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2017/07/21/breakfast-like-king-lunch-like-prince-dine-like-pauper-lose/

Mamia15 · 01/07/2018 13:54

An egg is way better than a cereal bar. It will sustain you for longer as well. Make sure that you eat enough protein and keep your sugar intake as low as possible.

I would measure yourself as often you lose inches before the weight start dropping off - the more muscle you build, the faster you burn calories but this will take time.

TornFromTheInside · 01/07/2018 13:54

Stop using scales, they are demotivating. Your weight will rise and fall by a couple of pounds in any given day, and depending on the time of day you weigh yourself.
Give yourself 6 weeks before touching a scale and you might get a better picture then, but as Vitalogy says, you'll notice it more in clothing as your body composition and shape changes.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 13:57

Clincallysally I love swimming but with my anxiety I could never get in to a pool full of people without feeling like they are all looking at me and making comments on my size that’s why I ride a bike because by the time someone has seen me I’m not around to hear the comments.

Thank you everyone for your helpful advice and viquess your right changing my mind reason for wanting to get healthy might help more.

jade9390 I will get checked out for that it’s worth making sure everything is working properly.

most common reasons ppl don't see a change:

you are adjusting your movement subconsciously to counteract the reduction in calories- so some ppl will move less if they go to the gym or diet as their body is trying to conserve energy- solution- monitor footsteps via a fitbit type thing

you are not actually burning lots of calories- how difficult are your walks / rides? maybe you could up the intensity

you need to boost your metabolism so try weights

you are not sleeping enough or stressed so your body goes into crisis mode making shedding weight and conceiving very difficult

you are not honestly tracking your calories - weigh everything and reduce your portions

tips for weight loss-
up your protien
cut alcohol- see how long you can go for
cut processed food/ meals out

you can undo all the hard work of 1 week in a high calorie day

Lovemusic33 · 01/07/2018 14:00

Weight loss is 90% diet and 10% exercise

Load of rubbish. I exercises every day and eat pretty much what I like, I have recently packed in the gym and have gained half a stone over a couple weeks although I have changed my diet to make up for not going to the gym, I still walk or swim every day. I don’t eat a huge amount and eat a varied diet.

Cycling will help your over all fitness but it may take a while to loose weight, you need to eat the right foods if you are exercising more, you don’t need to starve yourself, just eat better foods. Cereal bars are packed with sugar (even the light ones), you would be better off have not a omelette or poached eggs on brown toast for breakfast and it would keep you full longer. Some carbs and sugar just makes you more hungry.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 14:01

Dodie66 I have never heard that saying before I will remember that.

Mamia15 I will start eating eggs it’s better than ceral bars that’s for sure.

TornFtomThelmside I will ditch scales they do me no favours they just make me feel worse. I will do that you never know I might actually lose some weight if I’m not constantly jumping on the scales.

Lots of good advice here. I would add- get a yoga mat at home and try some utube workouts - HIIT workouts are brilliant there s lots available at all different levels, try a few beginner ones and you ll notice your fitness improving quickly and also get more toned and your healthier diet will have a better effect.

I would also try time it so you have carbs after not before a workout.

Are you drinking lots of water too?

mumsastudent · 01/07/2018 14:02

always make sure your eating less than your partner, use smaller plate! I use my slow cooker to make tagines & curries (veg & meat based or mixed), pot roasts, soups, stews, spag bog sauce etc.have cereal not cereal bars for breakfast (some cereal bars are v high in fat or sugar) or toast, as andwich made with only 2 slices of bread or have 1 slice of bread and do open sandwich with salad have lots of fresh fruit pieces as snacks. eat earlier than hubby but sit with him & have cup of tea or piece of fruit what are you having in your sandwiches? eat whole meal bred or cereals as they keep you fuller for longer. use semi or skimmed milk...

RandomMess · 01/07/2018 14:02

If you use my fitness pal to track everything and things don't improve etc you then have the evidence to go to the GP and show your metabolism isn't working properly or you potentially have PCOS or hormone issues.

Good luck Thanks

Rudgie47 · 01/07/2018 14:04

Hi there, You need to stop eating your tea at midnight for a start, have it at tea time like 5-7 p.m and let your partner do what he wants. Also your not eating the right stuff. Cereal bars are packed full of sugar. You need to be having things like porridge or scrambled eggs for breakfast..
Also cycling will not make you loose weight unless you are doing loads like 20-50 miles per day. I know because I cycle all the time and it makes bugger all difference unless you do a real lot.
Also no one is looking at you swimming, go to a womens only session if your worried. Dont let worry hold you back.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 14:05

1morerep I will try that I know my sleeping is all up the wall and I have been really stressed lately with things that are going on. But I will try that thank you.

Lovemusic33 my overall fitness is getting better and I can go on longer bike rides but I now know that the weight was never going to fall off me as quickly as I had hoped but I will keep at it because it’s helping.

When do you sleep?
This: "There is a direct correlation between lack of sleep and weight gain"

EllJ · 01/07/2018 14:13

@Shootfirstaskquestionslater that's horrid, some people are so tactless. Do this for you. It won't be easy and it will take some time but slowly but surely that weight is going to come off and that'll bloody show them!

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 01/07/2018 14:15

Thank you scatteredglitter I will try that I do have an excerise thing at home that I need to start using again and I will look on YouTube for exercise videos.

Thank you mumsastudent I will do that and I will have my tea before he gets home and then he can sort himself out and I don’t have to eat really late anymore which doesn’t help me at all.

Thank you randommess I am worried that I could have a problem with my thyroid or something because I’m constantly tired and drained I have restless legs and I just can’t seem to lose weight at all no matter what I try. Thank you Flowers

Rudgie47 thank you I will look in to women only classes worry holds me back from a lot of things I would like to try the gym again but I don’t want to walk in to a room full of fit people and have them stare at me like I’ve walked in to the wrong room. Thank you.

Thank you to everyone for your really helpful advice and ideas I will be trying all of them and I will get slimmer like I want to.

iijkk I go to bed anywhere between 1am and 2am and depending on what I’m doing the next day I can be up as early as 8:30 or as late as 10:30.

EIIJ I know she’s always been a horrible person and she’s very focused on my weight and telling me that I need to lose weight I do know that I’m not in denial. Thank you I will do and then I can tell her where to shove her comments I could be skinny as hell she would probably find something else to pick at she’s not a nice person at all my partner just let’s it all go over his head but I can’t because it stays with me for days after.

VladmirsPoutine · 01/07/2018 14:21

I might have missed it but how much do you weigh and how much are you trying to lose?

Cardio is pretty good for weight-loss too.

Lovemusic33 · 01/07/2018 14:21

shoot is also better to lose the weight slowly, the slower you lose it the slower you will gain it back. Making small changes to your life style (more exercise and better food) should give you resaults but don’t expect a miracle over night, it takes time.

OneForTheRoadThen · 01/07/2018 14:23

Have you tried SlimmingWorld? I have 4 stone of baby weight to lose and I've been going for 6 weeks and have lost almost a stone. I find it easy to do and it really is more of a lifestyle change than a diet. Being able to still have a drink or a chocolate bar makes it easier to stick to than a traditional diet.

I've just started going to classes at the gym too. I do feel a bit self conscious in my gym clothes but I stay away from the actual gym bit and go to aerobics and Pilates that tend to be all women and tbh I don't think anyone has even looked at me!

I started really changing my lifestyle in January. It took me a month and a half to really get into it.

Now I walk 3/5 miles a day

I crossfit for an hour 4 times a week

Do a very physical job, usually with a 1 year old strapped to my back

I’ve lost 2 stone since jan. I will weigh myself again in September and I hope to have lost 2 stone more. It’s slow going when you’re over 30 but if you focus on feeling better and doing more, rather than numbers on a scale, its a lot easier

For me getting fitter is not a thing I will do to reach a goal, but something that will be a part of my life forever
