To ask what social class you would say I am?

Hello!

So my friends and I were discussing class issues and one friend told me that I would have 'no idea about anything as I'm upper class' and another strangly interupted and mentioned that I'm working not upper class? I personally thought I was middle?

My situation is:
5 bed house worth 900K, no mortgage
2 Teenagers
Lucky enough to pay for their uni fees and sixth form fees, both at private sixth form, one went to a grammar and the other a state secondary school
DD owns a pony and DS used to
DD plays the violin and DS the drums
2 holidays a year (one longer one and either a week in cornwall/scotland or a couple of weekend city breaks)
Household income of 110-140K depending on the year as DH is self employed and can earn up to 90K.

I promise I'm not boasting or anything, we give 10K a year to charity and DS is in the process of persuading his dad to give his uni fees to a charity.

So what class would I be in your opinion?

I wouldn't call for example the Kardashian's UMC just because they have money. You don't even work so I would more think you are working class married into middle class.

FizzyWizzyFlash · 27/06/2018 20:47

Where we live:

Your house price is average.
Your kid's education is what most working class would have for their children where I live. I mean middle class would send their kids to private school I would think? You've only managed private sixth form? What am I missing? On that income you should have been able to comfortably send both through private primary and secondary?
Violin and pony, no big deal, I know working class people who are musically talented and take classes and the pony part I know of a couple (maybe more) of working class who own ponies.
Your holidays, I know many working my class people who have more holidays than you do.

Your income however sets you apart from all the average stuff you have in your life.
Though I can't understand why you have 2 holidays per year on that income? I would think you'd have more since you have not mortgage?

Based on your income , your lifestyle isn't as comfortable as it could have been. But why? Are you squirelling away huge chunks of money for the future?

MsConduct Def no titles here in the US honorary or otherwise. Thank goodness. Just causes confusion. My name is my name and is just me. It's so liberating.

RoseWhiteTips · 27/06/2018 20:48

Underclass.

Shockers · 27/06/2018 20:48

It’s a funny thing, but when I’m chatting with friends, we never ever discuss what class we might fit into.

Honestly, other than the OP, has anyone else had the class conversation with their friends?

ReginasLeftFlangie · 27/06/2018 20:50

sorry to distract from the thread but why the fuckery fuck is your livery bill 1k per month? What do they do for that, turn the horse shit to golden nuggets????

Scarface They sound like middle-class bohemians to me Grin.

MrsSnootyPants2018 · 27/06/2018 20:51

Seeking praise on Mumsnet for house value.... usually middle class doing well to disguise ones self as well off.

DieAntword · 27/06/2018 20:51

@Shockers well when I was a teenager we used to make fun of our friend for saying "tea" instead of "supper" (we thought it was just bants where as she was genuinely offended) but since being over 18 it hasn't really come up...

extinctspecies · 27/06/2018 20:53

Nothing in the OP's post can tell us what class she is.

And the fact that she thinks those things are class indicators is itself a strong indication that she is non-U.

Read Noblesse Oblige by Nancy Mitford OP.

And leave out the stealth boasts next time.

clownfaces · 27/06/2018 20:55

Shockers - no. I've never had that convo with any of my friends. I may ask them at the weekend

Some very nasty posts on here. Poor OP was only asking a question. You all come across as being quite bitter. What happened to live and let live.

Daisydoesnt · 27/06/2018 20:57

I thought class was generally defined by your occupation and level of education. OP what do you do for a living? (And what does your DP do?) Did you do A levels/ a degree/ etc?

FOR A PONY!!!! That was my comment too - complete BULLSHIT

BrewDoggy · 27/06/2018 20:59

hamburgers you actually sound more vulgar than the OP. The thread ain't about you, gun!

extinctspecies · 27/06/2018 20:59

Do you consider multi millionaire bussiness men/women working class?

Here's a few examples of people who fit into that category:

Lord Sugar
David Beckham - in fact most professional footballers

TheChineseChicken · 27/06/2018 20:59

I'm surprised you can afford a house worth £900k with no mortgage and 2 sets of private school fees on a total income of £110k. Our income is more than that and we couldn't

QueenoftheSilverDollar12 · 27/06/2018 21:00

Lol at the 'supper party'. When a friend of mine moved down to London from the West of Scotland for work, she was continually mystified at being invited round to people's houses 'for supper'. She queried this quaint custom of gatherings in yer jammies for toasted cheese or a big bowl of cornflakes at 8pm 😃 until somebody explained the slightly different meaning!

FriendlyOcelot · 27/06/2018 21:01

Aspirational Class.

I mean seriously, who cares? Maybe I’m getting a bit old and cynical but really... who cares? Do you think that one day when on your death bed anyone will give a shiny shite what class you were born into or died out of?

I am getting quite weary of people in real life who seem to care too. Just focus on being a decent human being ffs.

crispysausagerolls · 27/06/2018 21:04

TheChineseChicken

She didn’t pay 2 sets of private school fees, only for 6th form.

DaphneduM · 27/06/2018 21:04

Smug class - have you heard of hubris? You're asking for a big dose of it.
