to think we're reading too much into Melania's jacket?

Wearing a jacket with a message saying "I don't care, do you" on it to a detention camp is a very weird choice.

But all the people saying it's a message about immigrants, or a message about her feelings on her marriage or whatever else is... stretching it a bit.

She's a woman who isn't known for her towering intellect and is stuck in a marriage to the orange one. She never wanted to be first lady. She has been dragged into stuff she has no interest in.

So she's grabbed a coat without pausing to think about it, and been seen wearing it before someone could provide something more appropriate. It;s not a message. It's the actions of someone fairly dim and uneducated, and who doesn't understand the political game.

If you asked me what any of my t-shirts with writing on say I wouldn't know. But, really didn't anyone let her know before arriving ?

Dulra · 22/06/2018 14:29

If you think that you are incredibly naive. She knew exactly what she was doing and the reaction it would get. I have no idea who she was trying to get at or what she was referring to but she intended to make some sort of statement with jacket. It is a $40 jacket from zara when has she ever worn anything that wasn't designer.

Passmethecrisps · 22/06/2018 14:29

She may not be known for her towering intellect but she has teams of people whose job it is to do the thinking for her. It is staggering that no one told her not to wear it. And the weather was warm and humid so no need for a jacket - never mind a cheapo one from Zara two years ago.

Whether it was her own doing or someone else’s - there was a point being made

Rubyslippers7780 · 22/06/2018 14:29

I don't think she 'grabbed a coat'... she has a team and hairdressers etc. Don't be fooled.

Passmethecrisps · 22/06/2018 14:31

And ‘she grabbed a coat’

The image there is of a woman rushing out the door for a meeting after making sure she has got the kids to school, put the dishwasher on and has the shopping list for tonight’s dinner. That coat wasn’t hanging on a hook by the White House door

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 22/06/2018 14:31

I have to say I don’t understand how it can be deliberate. Why would anyone do that? It just doesn’t make sense. To publicly day you don’t care- well it’s not really a massage is it?

That said, she was one of the first to put out a statement condemning her husband and that was unusual and brave. It doesn’t stack up.

Dulra · 22/06/2018 14:31

If you asked me what any of my t-shirts with writing on say I wouldn't know.
Really Confused? I would never wear anything with writing on it unless I knew and agreed with what it stated

dinosaurkisses · 22/06/2018 14:32

I normally take most things at face value, but even I thought there was more to it.

She literally has a team of people whose jobs are to consider how everything she does, says and wears could potentially be interpreted by voters, commentators and the media. There’s no way that slogan passed by them.

PolkerrisBeach · 22/06/2018 14:32

she has teams of people whose job it is to do the thinking for her. It is staggering that no one told her not to wear it

Yes but as with the Donald, she does what the hell she likes. She doesn't want to be First Lady- that's clear. She knows she can't hold a candle to the likes of Michelle Obama or Laura Bush. She is "grinning and bearing it" until the Presidency is over and she can leave him.

And if they were trying to make a point well it's all backfired a bit as nobody appears to be very clear what that point was... Oh well, if we're talking about Melania's fashion choices that diverts attention from what's going on in the immigration centres I suppose.

All very odd.

@outofmydepth45
I don’t think I have much with words on it, a few holiday t shirts, but I certainly know exactly what each one means, I wouldn’t wear French Connection stuff with fcuk on. And I’m not under intense scrutiny!

listsandbudgets · 22/06/2018 14:33

Her spokes person said there was no hidden meaning... there didnt need to be the meaning was enturely overt.

I refuse to believe nobody advised her to change it. I could possibly believe shes so stupid she didn't think of it.. but surely once it had been pointed out to her she should have thought again

TheStoic · 22/06/2018 14:34

So she's grabbed a coat without pausing to think about it, and been seen wearing it before someone could provide something more appropriate

You honestly think that’s how FLOTUS gets dressed for public appearances?

postcardsfrom · 22/06/2018 14:34

She’s a woman who was a model, is ‘famed’ for her dress sense, has personal stylists, and is incredibly aware of her image and media - as are all her family- if you think for one second that she didn’t think about what she was doing when she put on the mat jacket you’ve got to be bloody joking. the ‘message’ was for the media apparently the insensitivity here is absolutely astounding - they don’t see these ‘illegal’ children as children, that’s the problem. A FOrtUNE was spent on security for them in NY when she refused to live to the White House while her son finished school so he wouldn’t have the ‘stress’ of a move mid way through the year. But immigrant people - many of whom will NOT be reunited with their families - those kids are an ‘infestation’. Trumps words not mine. Of course she knew what she was wearing but she along with the rest of the Republicans keeping this odious man in power give not one f@ck about those kids. Not one.

Batmanwearspants · 22/06/2018 14:34

you don't think that every outfit she wears is over-viewed by a team of people. They literally have political stratergists whose job it is to ensure that her and donald's outfits 'send out the right message'.

FlyingElbows · 22/06/2018 14:34

She "grabbed a coat"?! Don't be so ridiculous. She's the First Lady ffs she won't go anywhere without being pre-prepped by a stylist and an army of Whitehouse staff. Nothing that happens surrounding the First Family happens by accident. Celebrity feeds off controversy and above all the Trump family exists on a celebrity plane. The whole thing is completely batshit.

Moonkissedlegs · 22/06/2018 14:35

I just don't understand why she wore it? After everything that has happened, and her speaking out about it herself. She must have tonnes of coats, including ones with no writing on, why that one?

Passmethecrisps · 22/06/2018 14:36

Whether the intention was to whip up a storm to divert attention from something even more grim (if that’s possible) or to metaphorically raise an eyebrow. Or, maybe someone who works for her was making a point about just how dumb she is?

Whatever it was - there was thinking behind it. It was not just a coat

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 22/06/2018 14:36

First Lady has a troupe of advisors and POTUS with huge sense of what matters
Even if Melania did not get the significance of the slogan, others will have done
I imagine someone would have said something, I hope someone would say something
And still she chose to wear that jkt to that occasion
She hasn’t worn slogans to meet president macron, or other important events

Moonkissedlegs · 22/06/2018 14:36

So she's grabbed a coat without pausing to think about it,

Yes this did make me laugh! As if she was rushing out the door and just grabbed the nearest thing to her! 😂

listsandbudgets · 22/06/2018 14:37

No one is commenting on her wardrobe... everyone is commenting on the message she chose to put out there.

If people were saying for example the jacket was a bit tight and not really her colour that would be different

PolkerrisBeach · 22/06/2018 14:37

So what's the message then?

That it's all a front and she doesn't give a shit about the separated kids either?

Or that she doesn't care about her marriage?

Or that she doesn't care that America is going to hell in a handcart?

Or that it's what Donald would say - that he doesn't care about the immigrant children?

Don't believe the Trump tweet either that it's all about fake news, that's not credible in the slightest.

OP posts:
PolkerrisBeach · 22/06/2018 14:38

maybe someone who works for her was making a point about just how dumb she is?

This is the most credible explanation I've seen all day.

I grab a coat if I’m dashing to take bins out in the rain.not if I’m off to a significant event with world paparazzi watching me

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 22/06/2018 14:40

If you asked me what any of my t-shirts with writing on say I wouldn't know.

This is equally bizarre. Unless you can't read, of course.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 22/06/2018 14:41

She wasn’t doing an appearance though so I don’t think the grabbing a Jacket analogies are that far off. She’s just getting on a plane. It was supposed to be private- it’s a long lens photos. All of this, plus her statement, is why I’m
Struggling to understand she’d go to all this trouble to tell the world I don’t care about children. It makes no sense. What was the message ever going to be?
