To hate the light nights? (Title edited by MNHQ)

I cannot abide this time of year. I've been up since 3am because of the light mornings and I hate the light nights. Everyone else seems to love them but I want the cold, dark, pitch black at 3pm days back.

It's light until 11pm and light again at 3am!

AIBU to think the winter is much preferable to the misery of June light nights?

I prefer the dark too OP. I hated the dark morning when I had a 5am shift but it was bliss being off in the dark til gone 8am. There's nothing better than closing your curtains at 4pm 😍

theymademejoin · 21/06/2018 10:47

I have blackout blinds but the light still gets in the gaps.

I love the long evenings but hate the bright mornings. I put on an eyemask as soon as the light wakes me.

Buddyelf · 21/06/2018 10:49

Me too. I feel like such a miser saying it but I prefer Autumn and Winter and I like the cosy dark nights. I went to bed at 10 last night and it may as well have been mid-day it was that bright. I don't do well in the heat either so I am counting down the days until September.

ItDoesMyHeadIn · 21/06/2018 11:05

Bring on late October! Crunchy leaves all over the ground, all reds and browns and yellows and oranges. Hot chocolate, trick or treaters, country pubs with cozy fires. Best of all FIREWORK NIGHT!

Fuck Summer, all hay-fever and sweat 🖕🏻

jaseyraex · 21/06/2018 11:09

Total agreement with you OP! I much prefer autumn and winter. DS has been waking up at 4.30 every morning even with a blackout blind. I think he prefers the dark days and nights too! I can't stand the heat either. I'd much rather wrap up in ten layers of clothing in winter than feel like I want to shed a layer of my sticky sweaty skin off in summer.

RecliningHenderson · 21/06/2018 11:09

The title should obviously say light nights. Yes, I cannot wait for October. I count down the days till the clocks go back. I can't understand everyone's happiness at the length of the days. My colleague is gutted that the days get shorter from here on in. I couldn't be happier.

I have found my people Grinnothing better than dark nights shutting the world out and hunkering down before a fire and being able to go to bed without feeling like it's the middle of the day!

BeyondThePage · 21/06/2018 11:10

We have black out blinds in the window recess, black out linings and ADDITIONALLY blackout lined, dark-coloured curtains on the track. It works, we sleep well.

ToothTrauma · 21/06/2018 11:11

I hate hot, long days, but I always think that they are few and far between in this country so other people who like them are the ones getting short-changed! Wish I could trade them with someone who hates winter Grin

PanPanPanPing · 21/06/2018 11:14

I'm in too! Much as I love the Summer otherwise, the early sunrise and late sunset just get to me. I wake up too early, the cats seem to think it's breakfast time at about 4am and if I go to bed earlyish - even 9pm - it's still light. Love the Winter mornings and afternoons!

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 21/06/2018 11:14

What is it about the darkness?

I love the light nights. It feels like there is actually time to have a life around work; instead of going to work and coming home in the dark.

RecliningHenderson · 21/06/2018 11:15

I don't even mind the weather being warm, I enjoy sitting outside in the sun with a book, although I much prefer the cold days. But it's the constant, ever present light. I would happily compromise on hot days for people who like them till, say, 8, then cool, dark nights, but the sun is unwilling to do a deal.

I freakin' HATE summer. I can't even put it into words! I get so depressed when the days start warming up and I'm thinking about the months of misery ahead. I have heat intolerance so I'm the person passing out in tesco on a mildly warm day.

Autumn and winter are glorious. I absolutely LIVE for coziness and snuggles and crackling fires and couch blankets and crisp mornings and oversized jumpers and ankle boots and hot tea and comfort meals. All the best TV happens then too. And Christmas! Ugh I'm counting down the dayssss

RecliningHenderson · 21/06/2018 11:19

What is it about the darkness? I think it's that there's no expectations of having to do anything. You can get home and draw the curtains and watch TV in your pyjamas without feeling like you're wasting a night, but when you do go out there's an atmosphere in the air in the dark that isn't there in the light. Maybe it's that it feels less wrong to be in a pub mid-afternoon in the dark and I'm confusing it with atmosphere Grin

Every year we have this thread and every year I say I’m in agreement, bring on October and coziness etc.

Not this year! This year the fucking winter lasted FOREVER. I was utterly sick of winter by April when they threw in weeks of storms and wind and bloody snow - and I’m in London!

No more winter please, got totally pissed off with it this year

thecatsthecats · 21/06/2018 11:21

I get liking it being light in the evenings til, say, 9pm. And not being dark earlier than say, 6pm. But anything more - what's the point? Most people sleep more than 4 hours anyway.

Someone sort it please.

catinasplashofsunshine · 21/06/2018 11:25

YABU because I disagree and it's a totally subjective aibu :o

I have to get up at 5am anyway and it's so much pleasanter in the light. Going outside at 5:30am is an actual delight in June and desolate in November, when I have to leave earlier too, to scrape the ice off the windscreen and because the roads might be icy.

The kids have to walk to school/ the bus stop in the dark in winter which is more dangerous and depressing.

Couldn't you buy a blackout blinds if you can't sleep?

Unless you're close to the Arctic circle and it's actually light 24/7 where you are atm.

RecliningHenderson · 21/06/2018 11:25

Someone sort it please.

Something really ought to be done about it.

OP posts:
Firesuit · 21/06/2018 11:25

I'm never up at 3am because of the light. I have blackout blinds that mean that (assuming I closed room door as well) I wouldn't be able to see my hand in front of my face even at midday.

(OK, I've just tested that, and it is a slight exaggeration. There's a millimetre width gap at the bottom of the blinds that lets in just enough light that I can see a dark outline of my hand. But that gap would be easy to block if I really cared.)

QueenOfIce · 21/06/2018 11:31

I thought it was just me! as whenever I've huffed and said I cannot wait for autumn I've been given daggers!

I love late September when you suddenly get that smell of autumn in the air. That said I have unusually enjoyed the light mornings this year.

liz70 · 21/06/2018 11:53

I thought this was going to be a thread about all the superfluous lights that just about every single electrical appliance seems to sport these days, whether operating or not. Blue lights, red lights, white lights, twinkly lights, still lights, my living room resembles Blackpool bloody Illuminations these days. I want to go back to 1978.

Semster · 21/06/2018 12:15

I live at a latitude approx 800 miles south of London and we currently have sunset at 8.25pm and sunrise at 5am. Perfect.

echt · 21/06/2018 12:20

Living in Australia, in winter, I'm gagging for the longer evenings of summer, though they are never as long as in the UK.

Our shortest day today but still with two months of winter ahead.

I shouldn't moan; there are flowers in the garden all year round and veggies growing too. Sunshine most days all day.

Swizzlegiggle · 21/06/2018 12:23

Me too! I hate waking up early listening to the dawn chorus trying to get back to sleep then just as I start to doze against the DC's will wake up.
Bring on autumn!

JoeElliotsMullet · 21/06/2018 12:25

I know what you mean about light mornings starting at 3am but... but... I just can't agree with you. Blackout blinds are the way forward. Or brick your bedroom windows up. You can keep the curtains drawn so it doesn't look odd from the inside. But YABU. Sorry. I hate the depths of winter when it doesn't get light til nearly 9am and then it's dark again at 4pm. So depressing.
