.....To think that Donald Trump has pulled off a blinder with the Korean Treaty.

i know he gets a lot of stick and sometimes I think he is ridiculous ( “build a wall”) but he has done something here which is rather amazing. He has signed a treaty with the leader of famously aggressive North Korea for them to stop their nuclear programme which ultimately protects the world. He has achieved what 11 previous Presidents ( and 13 British Prime Ministers) could not. Does he deserve this achievement to be recognised as a marvellous thing?

@yorkshireyummymummy agree OP

The3 · 12/06/2018 18:33

Hmm. The “treaty” is a bit similar to one from 1993. Not clear what it means in practice. Good article in the Times.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 12/06/2018 18:33

Completely agree!

noblegiraffe · 12/06/2018 18:36

Hmm, the analyses I’ve read from North Korea experts seem to suggest that Trump has given lots, achieved nothing concrete in return and has flattered a dictator and appalling human-rights abuser.

bellanotte22 · 12/06/2018 18:38

Well I should think the people of South Korea are feeling a little easier. Hopefully concrete action will result.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 12/06/2018 18:39

Considering both sides dont exactly keep their word, I wont be holding my breath.

MissMarplesKnitting · 12/06/2018 18:39

It's almost smoke and mirrors. The agreement is almost wholly without content.

Another con from a conman.

That he rates Kim Jong Un ('his people love him, they have great fervour'. Hmm, wonder why?!) Putin and Duterte over Trudeaux, the EU and everyone tells you everything you need to know.....

LifeBeginsAtGin · 12/06/2018 18:40

I agree OP. Let's hope it lasts.

noblegiraffe · 12/06/2018 18:40

NK have said they will work towards denuclearisation. Meaningless.

Bourdic · 12/06/2018 18:40

Lets see something actually happen first - not holding my breath

Helloflamingogo · 12/06/2018 18:41

I’m sure people said the same about Neville chamberlain in the 30s.

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam · 12/06/2018 18:41

No reason to believe either side will stick to it.

But my biggest concern is he didn’t speak at all about the massive systematic human rights abuses going on in NK.

There are literally people sent to concentration camps because they or their relatives didn’t show allegiance to the regime.

They are tortured in many ways.

I find it hard to stomach the fact that none of this was broached at all.

derxa · 12/06/2018 18:41

You'll get pages of 'Trump is a vile mysogynist, bankrupt' blah blah
Let's just wait and see. Months ago everyone was saying nuclear war was about to erupt. The South Koreans seem happy.

brizzledrizzle · 12/06/2018 18:41

It all depends what is in the agreement, whether it's legally watertight and whether NK are actually going to stick to it.

I'll wait and see before applauding. In theory it sounds good but I go by the maxim 'if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is'

Pebblespony · 12/06/2018 18:42

One swallow doesn't make a summer. Until I see further evidence to the contrary, he's still a dick in my book. In regards to this particular topic though, according to reports, he seriously blindsided the South Koreans and they're the ones who have to live with it. Ask me in a year whether it was the diplomatic move of the decade.

imnotspartacus · 12/06/2018 18:44

I give it a week.
Bloody hell, if Justin Trudeau can piss him off - accept JT pisses off many Canadians - then Kim is more than likely to do or say something that'll piss off the orange snowflake.
And Kim has just got himself accepted by the USA as a "world leader" rather than a vicious odious little twat so he's already succeeded in his mission. Anything else is a bonus.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 12/06/2018 18:45

Nothing has budged in North Korea for 30 years

Trump is offering him a way out.. The promised land...

I agree nothing amazing has happened yet.. The devil is in the detail. So I won't get my hopes up yet... But I think trump has played a blinder thus far but we need to see how this ends up.
If I was citizen of North Korea I would be so hopeful that this could mean gradually opening up the country...

CocoPuffsInGodMode · 12/06/2018 18:45

Months ago everyone was saying nuclear war was about to erupt

Yes and that could be the situation in another few months. We're looking at two huge egos here, both very easily offended. It wouldn't be difficult for one to piss the other off and the pissing contest starts again.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 12/06/2018 18:46

I hate to get suckered in on another thread like this, but KJU has played Trump like a violin. He's finally got the worldwide stage he wanted and the USA has gained nothing new.

TheVanguardSix · 12/06/2018 18:46

I can see it now: Dennis Rodman and DT doing the Pyongyang shuffle together at the next mass games. Maybe they can recruit the Chicago Bulls cheerleaders.
It's all gonna work out.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 12/06/2018 18:47

He’s pulled a blinder. Although mostly in managing to pull the wool over people’s eyes in convincing them this is meaningful.

megletthesecond · 12/06/2018 18:47

yy to smoke and mirrors. He's probably got a Trump Tower Pyongyang out of it.

He'll change his mind next week anyway.

AornisHades · 12/06/2018 18:50

China are running this show not Trump. North Korea want money and status. Trump is a useful idiot to the Chinèse.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 12/06/2018 18:50

Walking, it was mentioned briefly but how can any one tackle north Korea with nuclear arms Confused get rid of those and then makes it easier to tackle that.

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam · 12/06/2018 18:51

That is a good point Ohsuchaperfectday, makes a lot of sense.
