.....To think that Donald Trump has pulled off a blinder with the Korean Treaty.

i know he gets a lot of stick and sometimes I think he is ridiculous ( “build a wall”) but he has done something here which is rather amazing. He has signed a treaty with the leader of famously aggressive North Korea for them to stop their nuclear programme which ultimately protects the world. He has achieved what 11 previous Presidents ( and 13 British Prime Ministers) could not. Does he deserve this achievement to be recognised as a marvellous thing?

North Korea made a nuke. Now the US is being all pally. Is that how diplomacy works now? Get nukes and suddenly everyone wants to be your friend?

ToffeeUp · 12/06/2018 19:56

Nothing concrete has been agreed on, if anthing kju hoodwinked Trump in believing he has played a blinder.

And according to Trump, kju loves his country and his people.

IlikemyTeahot · 12/06/2018 19:59

Trump is a businessman, there will be another deal within all this.

Daddystepdaddy · 12/06/2018 20:04

It isn't worth the paper it is written on. No specific commitments or timescales.

MissMarplesKnitting · 12/06/2018 20:07

Same people who criticised Obama hobnobbing with a dictator in Cuba are now fawning over Trump's "success".

You'll have to forgive my scepticism.

annandale · 12/06/2018 20:08

Trump is a reality tv personality with a brand, not a businessman.

Great visuals today for a TV presenter.

ScipioAfricanus · 12/06/2018 20:13

Legitimised a regime with some of the most horrific human rights on the planet, basically offered to withdraw troops, probably made US less popular with S Korea, and got in return a vague promise to de-nuclearise with no timeframe or guidelines. I expect N Korea will be doing that in the third month of the year Never.

Yes, he’s a great leader!

Actually him being fucked over is better than the two of them threatening to press their big red buttons so that’s a win of sorts, at least for us all, if not for the N Korean proletariat.

midnightmisssuki · 12/06/2018 20:15

i totally agree - say all you want about Trump - but he achieved something never thought possible.

PaddyF0dder · 12/06/2018 20:19

He’s signed no treaty. It’s just a statement about denuclearisation. Which was already a stated aim.

I can’t atand Trump, but fair play to him for aspects of this. However it’s not clear what the point of this is, other than self-aggrandisement on his part.

Look at it this way: NK develops nukes. Suddenly they can meet the US President and get to look important. Trump promises to cut back military activity.

Now, who’s come out better?

annandale · 12/06/2018 20:19

It's always been possible to have a summit with NK with no preconditions, it's just that nobody with a brain would do it. He wanted visuals that looked different from Obama. Meeting with Merkel -yawn. Meeting with KJU - great splash for the new season, terrific ratings

Yamayo · 12/06/2018 20:24

Trump has agreed to stop the war games in South Korea- the ones designed to deter NK and intimidate them. And they've promised nothing in return.

I can't imagine the South Koreans and the Japanese are going to be very pleased. Looks like China are going to take over.

Trump has been played big time.

Yamayo · 12/06/2018 20:25

But I guess Fox News will get food soundbites...

Yamayo · 12/06/2018 20:26

Good even.

WittyJack · 12/06/2018 20:26

I wouldn't trust either of them as far as I could throw a double decker bus with them driving it.

BonnieF · 12/06/2018 20:31

It’s way too soon to tell if anything substantial will come out of Trump’s meeting with Kim. There have been many false dawns in the past.

My theory is that Kim has been told by the Chinese that he needs to sort his country out, which is why we are seeing such a transformation in his approach to both South Korea & the US.

jeanzbeanz · 12/06/2018 20:34

Not a fan of DT but I have to say I admire his negotiation / deal-making skills. And that's more important than his personality and private life I guess

YetAnotherUser · 12/06/2018 20:35

North Korea made a nuke. Now the US is being all pally. Is that how diplomacy works now? Get nukes and suddenly everyone wants to be your friend?

Violence, terrorism and aggression etc does not get you what you want.

However, giving up violence, terrorism and aggression in exchange for progress is often quite effective.

Lweji · 12/06/2018 20:39

@jeanzbeanz

Not a fan of DT but I have to say I admire his negotiation / deal-making skills.

Such as? What has he actually negotiated successfully?

Most successful political negotiations happen behind doors. They take time and patience.

Trump only manages photoshoots.

lljkk · 12/06/2018 20:48

so far he has been a successful President.

Where's the infrastructure bill he promised?
Where's the replacement for DACA?
Where's the massive reduction in pharmaceutical prices that #45 promised?
Where's the increase in rust belt jobs?
Where's the renewed investment in American industry (oh wait, share buybacks...)
Where are the long-term tax cuts for ordinary earners?
Why is Pruitt still in the swamp?
Why does he have the lowest approval ratings for any President since approval ratings started?
Why isn't HRC locked up?

Successful my ass.

.....To think that Donald Trump has pulled off a blinder with the Korean Treaty.
lljkk · 12/06/2018 20:49

The Art of the Deal was completely ghost written by someone who needed the money & only got a picture of Chump by talking to his business rivals... Chump didn't even think of the title! Find Tony Schwartz's 2016 talk to Oxford Union.

Battleax · 12/06/2018 20:59

I think it’s a “he’s so bad, he’s good” thing. He’s gone in there like he’s buying some NY acreage, with a flashy sales video and his brash, smarmy confidence and he’s very close to achieving what traditional diplomacy failed to secure.

Impressive and terrifying. As much as I hope this one sticks I also hope this doesn’t catch on.

Lweji · 12/06/2018 21:01

He hasn't even managed to keep his WH staff.
And nobody loses a State Secretary less than a year into his term.

Lweji · 12/06/2018 21:02

They man who wrote Art of the Deal now regrets it.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 12/06/2018 21:03

Oh now, I dont think anyone has left this week.

TheLocalYokel · 12/06/2018 21:12

KJU and his father before him have wanted to be legitimised by a meeting with a US president for decades. Why are people reacting as if Trump has achieved something just by meeting him and securing nothing but the empty assurances of a morally bankrupt tyrant? It's not as if previous presidents 'failed' to get a meeting with KJI/KJU. They refused to do it because it didn't make strategic sense.

Will this meeting lead to something and prove then all wrong, and Trump right, for sitting down with KJU? Maybe. I genuinely hope so. But let's not pretend that the meeting itself is some kind of accomplishment Hmm.
