Would you not say thanks....??

A customer left a handbag in my shop today, I wasn't aware straightaway but when I saw it I found a passport so contacted the emergency number who turned out to be her dad. Girl subsequently rang me and she was on a train heading 100 odd miles home. I said I could post it so asked her to text me her address. Text came through with literally just her full name and address, no thank you, no offer to pay, nothing!

AIBU in think that if someone is doing you a pretty big favour you at least say Thanks?!

Tbh I’d hand it in to the police station and let them deal with it

I would ask how she intends to reimburse you for postage. It could be quite a bit of it's a handbag!

Make sure that you put your name and address in the package. Hopefully she'll thank you when she gets it.

I think that's the point of AIBU - to air things that you are worked up about, big or small. So no yanbu!

Bloody rude - in her place I'd be firing off effusive thanks and at the very least ensuring I paid postage (not to mention getting your address in return to send some flowers or something!)

Very poor manners!

Ask how she would like you to send it (eg courier, royal mail etc) and how she intends to pay you

Was her purse in the handbag? You could find out how much postage would be and tell her you'll take cash out to cover it.

That's very poor indeed. She needs to say thank you and pay postage, I'd be sending a little thank you as well. I found a bag of printed out emails and samples (material, wallpapers etc.) in a London taxi just before Christmas. She paid me, thanked me and sent me a bottle of wine which was absolutely lovely of her.

Get a myhermes estimate and ask her to PayPal you the amount beforehand. If she refuses, tell her no worries.... you will hand to police and she can pick it up when she returns at her convenience

I would certainly ask how she intends to pay for the sending back. It won't be cheap.

Notnthebpikt here but how did she manage to get on a train without noticing her bag was missing? Surely she would have needed her purse to buy a ticket or get her ticket out? How weird.

I’d ring her dad back and say his daughter wasn’t forthcoming with any thanks or offer to pay for the return of her passport so you’re taking it to the police station.

Honestly she’s a bit of a cf. how can you not know posting stuff costs money

I would text back with -" Thanks for details. I am sure you are very relieved I have your handbag safely. I am happy to take it to the post office to be sent on. Could you let me know which postal service you wish me to use, I believe registered post will be in the region of £15. Should I await a cheque or is a bank transfer preferable to you?"

Someone contacted my DH to say he had found his wallet on a train. DH drove to collect it. The man refused a reward so, after saying thanks, DH popped to the closest supermarket and bought a couple of bottles of bubbly and a 'monster truck' toy because the 'finder' had a young DS. He returned to the house and left the things in their porch.
This was the least he could do.

No way would I just post it at my own expense. Text her back and ask how she wants it sent and say you will send when you have received her bank transfer.

Otherwise take it to the police.

Did she say thanks when you spoke to her? Perhaps she was just so overwhelmed with relief she forgot to say thank you. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think it’s perfectly ok to ask for a thank you.

I’m pretty sure you can get her to pay for the postage if you send her the weight of the purse. She can pay online and then email you the postage label.

She needs to use a very secure method of postage if her passport is in there.

Definitely get her to pay! I would only pay if it was very small to post and they were very grateful. You'd think she would show relief at least!
